Ridgecroft goes 3-1

ROCKY MOUNT – Ridgecroft School won three of their four recent tennis outings.

All three of the Lady Rams top seeds went 3-1 over the stretch, helping Ridgecroft raise their season record to 3-3.

The Lady Rams defeated Gates County High School twice (6-3 and 8-1) as well as knocking off Community Christian School 8-1 before losing Monday at Rocky Mount by a final of 8-1.

&uot;We are very young and inexperienced, but we are improving,&uot; RHS coach Elton Winslow said.

Number one seed Kristen Cayton led the way for the Lady Rams, defeating the Red Barons’ Elizabeth Campbell twice. Both counts were 6-0 in favor of Cayton.

Cayton then knocked off Madison Wheeler by identical counts of 6-1.

Ann Winstead of Rocky Mount defeated Cayton by a count of 6-4 and 6-4.

Second seeded Sarah Grace Magette was equally good over the stretch, going 3-1 for the Lady Rams.

Magette defeated Community Christian’s Brooke Ashley 6-0 and 6-1 and swept Brianna Eure of Gates County in both matches. She won the first match 6-1 and 6-3 before taking the second 6-1 and 6-2.

Magette fell to Christine Louh of Rocky Mount 6-2 and 6-1.

Third seed Jessica Bolton was also 3-1 during the four matches. She twice defeated Amanda Lilley of Gates County. She won the first match 6-7, 6-3 and 7-5 before taking the second 6-4 and 7-5. She defeated Dana Rose of Community Christian 6-4 and 6-1.

Bolton lost to Taylor Boyette of Rocky Mount 6-2 and 6-4.

Ridgecroft fifth seed Caroline Bowman knocked off three of her four opponents as well during the streak.

Bowman defeated Lindsey Miller by a count of 6-1 and 6-3 in the first match with Gates County and 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 in the second. Against Community Christian, Bowman grabbed a 4-6, 6-3 and 11-9 win over Karley Sharpe. She fell by identical counts of 6-1 to Anna Mayo of Rocky Mount.

Sixth seed Tayler Smith split her two outings in the recent group. Smith defeated Jenna Speight of Community Christian by dual counts of 6-0. She split with Brittany Mise of Gates County, winning the first match 6-4 and 7-6 before falling in the second one 6-3 and 6-4. Emily Caddell of Rocky Mount topped Smith by counts of 6-1 and 6-1.

Lady Rams fourth seed Crystal Styron finished 1-3 over the four-game spread. She split with Gates County’s Leigh Ann Byrum and fell to Alyse Hawkins of Community Christian and Elizabeth Bailey of Rocky Mount.

In doubles action, Cayton and Magette won four consecutive matches. They defeated Campbell and Eure of Gates County by counts of 8-1 and 8-2 while defeating Wheeler and Ashley 8-3 and knocking of Rocky Mount’s Allison Alston and Christy Marrow 8-4.

Bolton and Styron went 3-1 while Bowman and Smith went 1-3.

&uot;Rocky Mount is strong at all positions, but I think our players went into the match a little intimidated,&uot; Winslow said. &uot;I am looking for a better performance when we play them again September 26.&uot;

The Lady Rams are scheduled to take to the court again Monday when they travel to Kerr-Vance Academy.
