AHOSKIE – As northeastern North Carolina braces for a tropical weather system of its own, the hearts and minds of local residents remain with those still reeling from Hurricane Katrina.

As of today (Tuesday), a third tractor-trailer truck full of relief supplies will leave Ahoskie in a continuing effort to help those affected by Katrina. The first two trucks traveled to the Greensboro area where hundreds of evacuees from the storm are currently housed in shelters.

Now, according to Jennifer Taylor of Ahoskie, two additional trucks are on standby to accept household furniture and other items needed for these storm victims to attempt to begin a new life.

"These people have lost their homes, their jobs and pretty much their way of life," Taylor said. "Many are coming to North Carolina in search of a new life. That's where we can help."

Taylor said two tractor-trailers will be parked in front of Ahoskie's Wal-Mart this Saturday from 6 p.m. until midnight. Local residents are asked to bring by used bedroom, living room and dining room furniture. Kitchen items n dishes, pots-and-pans, utensils and small appliances (coffee pots, can openers, microwaves, etc) are also needed.

All used items are to be cleaned prior to drop-off.

Additionally, Taylor said new bedding, linens, towels, bath cloths, etc. are also needed.

"This particular relief effort will help these people get back on their feet as they make an attempt to return to some sort of normal life by having a roof over their head," Taylor noted.

Volunteers (all men) are needed for Saturday. Taylor is currently putting together a list of names that will man the trailers during that six-hour period, accepting and stacking the donations.

"We need some manpower this Saturday so please call us and volunteer your time from 30 minutes to one hour," Taylor said.
