EDENTON – Edenton used 20 second quarter points to take down previously undefeated Gates County here last night.

The Aces broke open a game deadlocked at six and never looked back, going on to a convincing 46-14 win over the Red Barons.

With the score tied early in the second period, the Aces blocked a Gates County punt. Two plays later, Devonte Bond scampered six yards to paydirt which, coupled with Brian Leary’s conversion run, gave Edenton a 14-6 lead.

The Red Barons put the ball on the turf during their next possession and Edenton again capitalized.

Two plays after recovering the fumble, Leary connected with Earthan Ward on a 20-yard scoring strike. The PAT failed, but the Aces led 20-6.

Another fumble for Gates County led to the same results. After the Aces recovered the ball on the Red Barons’ next drive, they marched 54 yards on eight plays to pad their lead.

Joseph Westbrook found Ward for the scoring pass of nine yards for the touchdown with 3:05 to play in the first half. The two-point conversion failed, but Edenton led 26-6 at the break.

The Red Barons looked to get back into the contest in the third quarter, going 52 yards on three plays, capped by a 45-yard touchdown run by Raphael Eason. The two-point conversion run by Graylon Boone cut the deficit to 26-14.

Edenton answered on their next possession, driving 75 yards on nine plays to put the game out of reach. Leary had the two-yard scoring run. The conversion failed, leaving the Aces ahead 32-14.

Following a Gates County punt, Edenton scored again with 10:59 to play in the contest. Westbrook scampered 22 yards to cap a 54-yard drive. Broc Sutton added the extra point to give Edenton a 39-14 edge.

The final Edenton score came after another Gates County punt, this time one that traveled only three yards.

The Aces drove 21 yards on four plays and scored on a Linnell Evans eight-yard run. The conversion by James Rickenbaker was good to give the Aces the final margin of victory.

Edenton scored first in the game, going only 11 yards after a huge punt return by Ward. Leary scored the touchdown with 6:22 to play in the first.

Gates County answered with just over a minute to play in the quarter. The Red Barons drove 68 yards on nine plays to deadlock the score. Kent Reid and Boone had the bulk of the carries on the drive with Boone punching it in from two yards out. The kick failed leaving the score tied at six.

Gates County posted 230 yards of total offense, 120 of which came by way of rushing yards for Eason. Reid had 49 yards while Boone checked in with 40.

Leary led Edenton’s balanced attack with 60 of the team’s 309 total yards of offense.

The Red Barons will look to get back on the winning track next week when they travel to Southside.
