Braves Win!

It was a good weekend for Chowan College gridiron fans.

Down 13-0 in the third quarter against an improved Randolph-Macon squad, the Braves never gave up and scored 16 unanswered points for the victory.

As if the win was not good enough, it was the way they won Saturday that impressed me the most.

Having been a sports writer and Chowan fan for quite a few years, I have seen my share of football games with the Braves down and seemingly out.

It was different this time.

The Braves played a full 60 minutes of football and refused to simply pack it up and go home.

Don’t get me wrong, Chowan is going to lose some games this year, probably more than they win.

They are a young team with a new coaching staff and system to learn and that takes time.

However, if they keep fighting and refuse to give up like they did Saturday, then they will have achieved something rare but vital to the success of the Chowan College football program.

A winning attitude.

Congratulations to a deserving coaching staff and squad.

Keep up the hard work.

Speaking of college football, there was something else exciting that happened over the weekend.

NC State Lost!

Sorry Wolfpack fans, but there is little I enjoy more than watching your football team self-destruct on national television.

I only wish it had been my beloved Tarheels that had caused them such embarrassment but that’s ok.

Never before have I been such a Virginia Tech fan.

Go Hokies! (at least until November 26th)

Carolina fans had lots to celebrate over the weekend.

Not only did State lose but Duke traveled to Greenville and got beat by ECU.

The Pirates, coming off a dismal 2-9 season, must have looked like easy prey to the Dookies.

I guess somebody forgot to tell the Pirates that they were supposed to be scared of the ACC.

If that wasn’t enough, the Carolina basketball squad beat a tough YMCA team while on vacation in the Bahamas.

The exhibition win was actually over the Y-Care Wreckers, a team comprised mostly of former college and NBA players (none of which where very good).

Although fairly insignificant in regards to any success they may have later this season, they did manage to score 106 points in the win.

That is comforting given that they lost over 95% of their scoring from last season.

I know everyone is excited about Tyler Hansbrough but the name Tarheel fans should get to know is Reyshawn Terry.

The junior didn’t see much playing time last year but will probably be the biggest benefactors of Roy Williams’ run-n-gun offense this season.

On a different note, I have not written a column since Hurricane Katrina tore through New Orleans and it’s neighboring states and would feel amiss if I did not take this opportunity to ask any and all reading this to please keep those affected by this terrible storm in your daily prayers.
