GASTON – Greensville County scored early.

Northampton-West scored often.

The Hurricanes overcame a 7-0 early deficit to roll by the Eagles 46-7 here Thursday night as West improved to a spotless 3-0 on the early season.

Johnny Spencer returned a punt 58 yards to paydirt with just a few ticks more than 10 minutes to play in the first quarter to gain the early advantage. Horace Smith added the point after to give the Eagles a 7-0 advantage.

It took only a few minutes for West to come roaring back as quarterback Randy Turner connected with Aljerald Butcher for a 31-yard scoring strike with 6:14 to play in the quarter. Titus Lee added the conversion run and West was off to an 8-7 lead. West’s scoring drive came on a nine-play, 50-yard drive.

The two squads exchanged possessions before Dasmine Moody raced 54 yards to paydirt with just 42 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Lee added the conversion to put West ahead 16-7.

Northampton put the ball in the endzone three more times in the first half.

The first of those came when Moody went 63 yards on the first play after a Greensville County punt. Turner added the two-point conversion to build the West advantage to 24-7.

After forcing another Eagle punt, West set sail on a seven-play, 70-yard drive to help put the game out of reach for the visitors.

Following three straight first down runs (two by Lee and one by Todd Squire), Lee punched the ball in from eight yards out with 5:38 to play in the first half. Turner hit Marquette Branch for the two-point conversion to make the score 32-7.

West scored once more in the third quarter when they put together a 70-yard drive that featured Lee. The senior carried the ball six consecutive times and capped the drive with a six-yard run at the 1:04 mark of the second period. The conversion pass failed leaving West up 38-7.

The second half started well for the Hurricanes as they recovered a Greensville County fumble at the Eagles’ 45-yardline. From there, they went on a 10-play, 45-yard drive to seal the game.

Moody scored on an eight-yard run at the 7:10 mark of the third quarter. Devin Williams added the conversion run to give West a 46-7 advantage.

In all, the Hurricanes amassed 416 yards of total offense, 385 of which came on the ground.

Moody led all rushers with 154 yards on 10 carries while Lee checked in with 150 yards on 17 carries.

Turner was 1-for-4 on the night passing with 31 yards.

The Hurricanes (3-0) will take to the road next week when they travel to Charlotte Country Day School.
