Norman Joyner, Jr.

In the early hours of August 25, 2005, God’s healing hands touched the body of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, and led him to an eternal resting place Norman Joyner, Jr. was born May 8, 1937, in Northampton County to the late Norman and Dinah Joyner.

He joined First Baptist Severn at an early age. He graduated from Willis Hare High School and enlisted in the Army. He then married his loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Ethel.

He specialized in electronics while in the Army. He was a Jumpmaster with the 82nd Airborne Division. He received the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. He received the following honors: Senior Parachute Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National

Defense Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palms, Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and two Good Conduct Medals. He retired in 1977 with 20 years of service.

He was a 33 degree Masons (Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite International Jurisdiction). He was the Sovereign Grand Inspector General). He was a member of the Supreme Council. He was a devoted member and friend to all.

He was a faithful church member. He was a Trustee. He served as the Superintendent of the Sunday School. He was a Sunday School teacher. He sang in the Male Chorus and the Combine Mass Chorus.

He was an electronics teacher for Northampton County Schools for many years. He helped engineer the electric cars for the county. You could find him game time cheering for the Hurricanes of Northampton County High School West.

He was a certified member of the Conway-Severn Rescue Squad. He was always quick to respond to those in need of assistance. He was also an organ donor, leaving his eyes for someone else to see the beauty of the world.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory a wife, Ethel of Pendleton, NC; three daughters, Sandra Deloatch (Archie) of Pendleton, NC, Gwendolyn Wilson (Patrick) of Franklin, Va., and Denise Grant (Willie Louis) of Pendleton, NC; seven grandchildren, Keino Deloatch, Caprisha Deloatch, and Archinda Deloatch, all of Conway, NC, Lionel Dube and Jalisa Parker of Pendleton, NC, Thembekile Dube of Raleigh, NC, and Julius Parker, Sr. (Ja’Kesha) of Greensboro, NC; one great-grandchild, Julius Parker, Jr. of Greensboro, NC; two sisters, Inora Stephenson (Carlton) of Murfreesboro, NC, Leather Camen (Edward) of Roosevelt, New York; one sister preceded him in death, Jessie Bell, one brother, Albert (Louise), Old Fort, NC, one brother proceeded him in death George, four sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, two aunts, a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

His funeral was a celebration of life. Hundreds of people over flowed the church. The Conway-Severn Rescue Squad made a flag presentation followed by an end service call broadcast statewide by the Northampton County Sheriff’s Department.

The Honor Guard of the 82nd Airborne Division provided the Military Honors Ceremony. This included the flag presentation 21 gun salute and flag presentation. The honor guard also served as pallbearers.

The Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite International Jurisdiction provided the Last Rites Ceremony The Supreme Council members also served as honorary pallbearers.

The family of the late Norman Joyner Jr. would like to thank everyone for all their acts of kindness during their time of bereavement we thank you for the cards, flowers, food and all acts of expression. We thank all his friends that came from all parts of the world to attend his homegoing celebration.

Marjorie P. Alligood

ALBEMARLE – Marjorie Leigh Pritchard Alligood, 70, 533 North Fifth St., a native of Hertford County, died August 31, 2005 at Lutheran Home, Albemarle.

Mrs. Alligood was born March 6, 1935 to the late Walter Clyde Pritchard and Elma Naoma Burkett Pritchard. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Ennis Alligood, Jr., and a sister, Alice Pritchard Baker. She was a retired bookkeeper with Stanly County School System.

Mrs. Alligood graduated from Ahoskie High School, attended Chowan College and graduated from Pfeiffer College with a BS degree. She was an active member of the choir, and attended church faithfully as long as her health permitted. She was also a member of First Baptist Church, Albemarle.

Survivors include two sons, Mike Alligood of Lawrenceville, GA and Steve Alligood of Albemarle, NC; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 3, 2005 at First Baptist Church Albemarle by the Rev. Roger Thomas and the Rev. Harold McDonald. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle, NC. Visitation was conducted from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Albemarle, 202 N. Second St., Albemarle, NC 28001. Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur E. Harrell

RICH SQUARE – Mr. Arthur Edward Harrell, age 79, of Hwy. 305, Rich Square, NC, died Sept. 1, 2005 at his home.

Mr. Harrell was born May 13, 1926 in Bertie County, NC, the son of the late Arthur Harrell and Beulah Parker Harrell. He worked for many years at Freeman Metal in Ahoskie, NC, and had worked in the saw mill.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Davis Harrell; his daughter, Marian H. Miles of Rich Square, NC; his grandchildren, Melissa Abrams and Mitchell Vann, also of Rich Square, NC; four great-grandchildren, Justin, Michael, Stephanie and Caitlin. Three sisters, Leila Edmonds, Margaret Davis and Mildred White. Also his nieces and nephews, Betty, Ralph, Richard and Wayne.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC with the Rev. Adam King officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarlawn Cemetery in Rich Square, NC.

The family received friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Friday from 7 until 9 p.m. and other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to University Hospice, Ahoskie, NC 27910.

Cynthia W. Powell

AHOSKIE – Cynthia White Powell, 48, a native of Bertie County, died August 29, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday, September 3 at First Baptist Missionary Church, Powellsville, by the Rev. John White. Burial will be in the Liverman family Cemetery, Powellsville.

Survivors include two sons, Da’Quon D. Powell and Darrian D. Powell, both of Powellsville; brothers, Carlton D. White and Gregory T. White, both of Powellsville, David E. White of Boston, Mass., Elvis Beacher of Ahoskie and Edward C. Rankins of Connecticut; and sisters, Mildred Jackson of Liberty, NY, Joyce W. Moore of Powellsville, Juddie W. Moore of Ahoskie and Alice R. Smith of Powellsville.

Jerome H. &uot;Slick&uot; Askew

AHOSKIE – Jerome Hughes &uot;Slick&uot; Askew, 76, of the 1000 block of West Troy Street, Ahoskie, died Wednesday, August 31, 2005 in Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Mr. Askew was born in Chowan County, a son of the late Will and Mary Hughes Askew.

He was retired as a salesman for North State Provision Company after 40 years of service.

Slick was a 32nd degree mason and was past master of Ahoskie Masonic Lodge #684 AF & AM and was currently a member of Davie Masonic Lodge #39 AF & AM.

He was a member of the Sudan Shrine Temple in New Bern, the Newbern Scottish Rite, the Enfield Scottish Rite, the Roanoke Chowan Shrine Club and the Roanoke Chowan Wildlife Club.

Mr. Askew was a former member of the North Carolina National Guard Special Unit.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and golfer.

Survivors include his wife, Daphne Jilcott Askew; two daughters, Eva A. Early and husband, James of Ahoskie, and Georgia A. Perry and husband, Jerry of Elizabeth City; two sons, Jerry W. Askew and wife, Robyn of Knoxville, TN and Donald J. Askew and wife, Karen of Winterville; a brother, Marshall Askew of Winton; and grandchildren, Taylor Askew and Avery Askew of Knoxville, TN, Grant Askew of Grifton, NC, Christin Perry, Thomas Perry and Elizabeth Perry of Elizabeth City, Josh Morris, Hannah Early and Daniel Early of Ahoskie.

Besides his parents, Mr. Askew was predeceased by a son, Gordon H. Askew, six brothers and three sisters.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 4, 2005, at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Thomas Ravan officiating.

Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. on Saturday and other times at the home.

Wilson &uot;Wilt&uot; Smith

AULANDER – Wilson &uot;Wilt&uot; Smith, 56, of 111 Sandpiper Square, Alander, died Wednesday, August 31, 2005 in his home.

Mr. Harrell is survived by his mother, Ola Mae Smith of Windsor; two children, Keith Cousin and Sharese Majette both of Paterson, N.J.; three brothers, Ulysses Smith Jr. and Edgar Smith, both of Paterson, N.J. and Cecil Smith of Roxobel, five sisters Dorothy Hardy of Washington, D.C., Glenda Newsome of Bronx, NY, Vera Newsome of Fayetteville, Vicki Dickerson of Lewiston and Rachel Smith of Bronx, NY.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 4 at Mill Branch Baptist Church in Aulander with the Rev. Ronald Dolberry officiating. Burial will follow in the Mill Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.
