NEA wins again

ELIZABETH CITY – And then it was two.

Northeast Academy claimed their second tennis victory in two days here Wednesday as the Lady Eagles rolled to an 8-1 victory over Pasquotank County High School.

The Northeast squad was undefeated in singles competition and won two of three doubles matches to secure the victory.

Both top seed Lyndal Brown and second-ranked Laura Boone disposed of their opponents in straight sets. Brown stopped Anna Winslow 6-1 and 6-2 while Boone collected a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Sarah Lilley.

Third seed Samantha Cook dropped her first set to Callin Gilroy 3-6, but rallied to victory by winning the second set 6-3 and the tiebreaker 10-6.

Allyson Cashwell remained perfect on the young season as she defeated C. Saunders 6-4 and 7-5 while Brittany Wade stopped P. Moore 6-1, 4-6 and 7-3.

Betty Edwards claimed her first singles victory of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over A. Turner.

In doubles action, Cashwell and Cook stopped Gilroy and Turner by a 10-4 count while Edwards and Wade defeated H. Gilroy and Watts 10-3. Top seeds Brown and Boone fell to Winslow and Lilley by a 10-7 final.

In exhibition tennis, Kathryn Bryant defeated Shawna Sykes 8-3 while Leigh Ann Barnes fell to S. Craig 8-1. In doubles exhibition, Bryant and Barnes defeated Guess and Chesson 8-4.

The victory lifted the Lady Eagles to 2-0 on the young season as they travel to Roanoke Rapids for a rematch with the Lady Yellow Jackets on Monday at 4 p.m.
