Dorothy M. Vinson

WOODLAND n Dorothy Murphy Vinson, 65, a native of Hertford County, died August 16, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 p.m. Saturday at Menola First Baptist Church, Woodland, by the Rev. Johnnie Speller. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Vinson was a member of Menola First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, George Vinson; a daughter, Sabrina Vinson; stepson, Anthony Spruill; stepmother, Julia W. Murphy; two brothers, Curtis Wiggins of Kinston, William A. Murphy of Avondale Estates, Georgia; four sisters, Constance Middleton of Riegelwood, Helen Marner of Kinston, Marie Rhem of Kinston and Melinda Foster of Richmond, Va.; and one grandchild.

Kenneth Z. Smith

PALM COAST, Fla. n Kenneth Zane Smith, 57, formerly of Conway (Dusty Hill Community) died August 7, 2005 after a year long battle with colon cancer.

Smith graduated from Northampton County High School and was a Merchant Marine for 20 years. He was also a longtime realtor for Joe Lamb Realtors in Nags Head. At the time of his death, he was a resident of Palm Coast, Fla., where he has lived for 11 years.

He was currently employed by Wiehert Realtors in Palm Coast for the past several years, where he was awarded with many sales awards for his outstanding sale and ability.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Smith of the home in Palm Coast; a sister, Pamela Smith; and a brother, Alton Smith.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to: Hospice n Wood Briar Fort Orange, Fla. 32129.

Sherlene H. Daniel

MURFREESBORO n Sherlene H. Daniel, 52, a native of Hertford County, died August 16, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall, Woodland, by Roy Futrell. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her children, Ivan P. Daniel of Hampton, Va., Jerry T. Daniel of Roanoke Rapids, Shiwanda Bishop of Murfreesboro and Brenda Daniel of Charlotte; brothers, James H. Parker Jr. and Albert Parker, both of Conway, Johnnie Parker of Murfreesboro, Willie P. Parker and Jesse Parker, both of Rich Square, Annie Mae Maddrey of Como, Shelia Motley of Murfreesboro, Shirley Riddick of Woodland, Luceda Parker of Potecasi and Rocky Rowles of Margarettsville and four grandchildren.

Julia F. Pennington

MURFREESBORO – Julia Futrell Pennington, 89, died peacefully August 17,

2005 at Cypress Glen Retirement Community in Greenville, NC, where she lived since July, 1999.

Born in Northampton County, NC on October 17, 1915, the only child of Mary Lillian and Kelly Edward Futrell, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Chowan College in 1937.

Mrs. Pennington taught school in Alliance, North Carolina until her marriage to James Clifton Pennington on February 15, 1941.

After 25 years as a military wife, active in the Officers’ Wives club and as a hospital volunteer Gray Lady, she and her husband retired in Murfreesboro, North Carolina in 1966.

She was an active member of the Murfreesboro Baptist Church, the Murfreesboro Women’s Club and the Murfreesboro Historical Association.

Preceding Mrs. Pennington in death in November, 1999, was her husband of 58 years, Colonel James C. Pennington (US Army Ret.).

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Anne Pennington and husband, Walter J. Shackelford, Julia P. Worley and husband, Mack, both of Greenville; a son, James Kelly Pennington and wife, Cynthia, of Sonoma, California; two grandchildren, Jason V. Worley and Julia Blythe Worley of Greenville; a niece, Nancy B. Taylor of Atlanta, Georgia; and her &uot;adopted brother and sister&uot;, Charles &uot;Chip&uot; and Vera Pennington of Cypress Glen Retirement Community in Greenville.

Sincere appreciation by her family is extended to the nursing staff in the Cypress Glen Skilled Care Unit for their dedicated care of Julia Pennington at the end of her life.

Visitation will be at Garrett Funeral Home in Murfreesboro on Saturday, August 20, 2005 from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m.

A graveside funeral and entombment will be conducted by the Reverend Thomas Caulkins at Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro, North Carolina at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, 2005.

The family will assemble at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, prior to services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Murfreesboro Baptist Church or Chowan College.

Thomas Lee Smith Sr.

GATES n Thomas Lee Smith, Sr., 66, of 360 NC 37N, Gates, North Carolina, died August 16, 2005 in Gates. He was a native of Gates County and son of Sophie Piland Smith and the late Leroy Smith.

He was retired from Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company. He was a member of New Middle Swamp Missionary Baptist Church, Corapeake, NC where he was a Trustee.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley G. Smith; one daughter, Tonia L. Smith of Hampton; two sons, Bishop Thomas L. Smith, Jr. of Memphis, TN and Gregory Smith (Jacqueline) of Virginia Beach; his mother, Sophie Piland Smith of Gates; four sisters, Winnie Carter of Chesterfield, VA, Shirley Williams of Baltimore, MD, Leora Dail of Silver Spring, MD, and Rita Dail of Suffolk; two brothers, George C. Smith (Shelia) of Elizabeth City, NC and Julius C. Smith of Gates, NC; eight grandchildren; aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Felicia Smith.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, August 21, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. in New Middle Swamp Baptist Church, Corapeake, by Bishop Thomas L. Smith, Jr. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, August 20, 2005 from 6 to 7 p.m. in Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk.

Elwood G. Martin

LASKER — Mr. Elwood Glaston Martin, 88, a native of Northampton County, died August 15, 2005 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount.

Martin was a retired farmer. He was a life-long Baptist and a member of Creeksville Baptist Church. He was also member of the Rich Square Masonic Lodge and held a 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Grant Martin; his children, Tony L. Martin of Littleton, Larry G. Martin of Raleigh, Joan Martin Leon of Charleston, SC, and Dr. Willis E. Martin of Red Oak; his sister, Elma Martin Lassiter of Creeksville; eight grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday at Creeksville Baptist Church by the Rev. Brian Detrick. Burial followed at the church cemetery. Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, was in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to Creeksville Baptist Church, Conway, NC 27820.

Carroll K. Wilkins

ROXOBEL n Carroll Kenneth Wilkins, 59, a native of Bertie County, died August 1, 2005 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Rich Square. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander is in charge.

Survivors include his brothers, Anthony "Lynn" Wilkins of Rich Square, Leslie Wilkins of Lewiston, Lonnie Wilkins and Colden Wilkins, both of Hampton, Va., and Reuben Wilkins of Alexandria; his sisters, Phyllis Keemer of Kelford and Esther Norman of Lewiston; and two stepdaughters, Charlotte Crouell of Cove City and Patricia Moon of Baltimore, Md.
