Jim McMahon was the best quarterback ever.

These are the sickening words I am forced to type after my beloved Dolphins snatched defeat from the jaws of victory Monday night.

Our Composition Manager, David Taylor is an avid Bears fan and after much trash talk we decided to place a small side bet (no money, just humiliation) on the Hall of Fame game.

Had Miami won he would have been obligated to include in his next column that former Dolphin running back Terry Kirby was the greatest running back in the history of the game.

As if writing today’s opening statement wasn’t hard enough, I am forced to do it the same week Dan Marino was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Marino was in my opinion the greatest quarterback to ever play the game.

Given the look of that pass to former teammate Mark Clayton during his acceptance speech, I’m not sure he still isn’t better than any quarterback on the Dolphins roster.

Marino was truly the best of the best and deserves his own room in Canton, Ohio.

Joining Marino as new Hall of Fame members are Steve Young and the late Benny Friedman (no relation) and Fritz Pollard.

Friedman and Pollard were long overdue and extremely deserving of the honor.

Friedman still holds multiple NFL records including being the only player in history to lead the league in passing and rushing yards for a season.

He was Michael Vick before anyone knew who Vick was.

Then again, so was Randall Cunningham.

Fritz Pollard can only be described as a football guy.

Pollard was the most feared running back of his time and proved to be such an exceptional athlete that they moved him to quarterback.

Pollard turned out to be to be even more valuable as he eventually became a player-coach, an important distinction given that he was one of only two black players in the league.

I bring up their credentials only to preface this.

I hope the next time the NFL wonders why it has such a bad reputation in regards to race, they ask the voters why it took nearly a century to get the first black and jewish quarterbacks into the Hall of Fame.

While I’m on the subject of football, I hope you are as excited as I am about upcoming prep season.

It seems to have been a longer summer than usual and I am ready to see our local high schools kickoff.
