WINDSOR n Annie R. Spivey, 72, died August 4, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Refreshing Center in God and Christ. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Daisy H. Lane

TYNER – Daisy Hurdle Lane, 91, a native of Perquimans County, died Aug. 6, 2005, at the home of her daughter in Sunbury. She was the widow of Thomas Edward Lane.

Mrs. Lane was retired from the cafeteria at the former Chowan High School, she was a member of Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church, its Women's Missionary Society and had formerly taught Sunday school.

Survivors include three daughters, Audrey Spivey of Hobbsville, Carolyn Parker of Sunbury and Joyce Dail of Tyner; a brother, Clinton Hurdle of Camden; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Lloyd Meads and the Rev. Tim Dannelly. Burial was in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Elizabeth City. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in her memory be directed to Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church, N.C. Hwy. 37, Belvidere, NC 27919.

Essie Mae Ellis

FRANKLIN, Va. – Essie Mae Bradshaw Ellis, 81, a native of Southampton County, died Aug. 6, 2005, at Southampton Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Ellis was a was a member of Hunterdale Baptist Church and was retired from Hancock Peanut Company.

Survivors include her husband, Jessie Robert Ellis Jr.; four daughters, Helen E. Carr of Courtland, Mary E. Parker of Eure, Patricia E. Davis and Sheila E. Ward, all of Courtland; a son, Jessie Robert Ellis III of Franklin; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Jessie Robert Ellis Jr.; four daughters, Helen E. Carr of Courtland, Mary E. Parker of Eure, Patricia E. Davis and Sheila E. Ward, both of Courtland; a son, Jessie Robert Ellis III and wife Donna of Franklin; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside funeral was conducted Monday at Rosemont Cemetery, Sedley, by the Rev. Chuck Worth. Wright Funeral Home was in charge. Memorials may be made to Sedley Fire Department, 18080 Johnsons Mill Road, Sedley, VA 23878.

Emma Cooper

HOLLISTER n Emma Eley Newsome Cooper, a native of Hollister, died on August 5, 2005, at Morningside Assisted Living in Raleigh. She was the widow of Stephenson Askew Cooper.

Mrs. Cooper worked in the retail fashion industry in Richmond, VA, and Lexington, KY.

Survivors include her sisters Mamie Newsome Bryan of Wilmington and Virginia Newsome Overman of Manteo; and three adopted daughters, Sally Scherer and Sabra Taylor of Raleigh and Lois Carson of Merry Hill.

Emma’s family wishes to express special appreciation to the staff of Morningside Assisted Living and to Hospice of Wake County for their compassion and care.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2005, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Ahoskie, NC, at 10 a.m. Memorials may be made either to St. Thomas Episcopal Church or to Hospice of Wake County. Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh, was in charge.

Phyllis W. Eure

AULANDER n Phyllis Wiggins Eure, 52, a native of Bertie County, died August 4, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Elbert Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Eure was an instructional partner at Bearfield Elementary School. She was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Elvis Eure of the home; one daughter, Tremaine Latoya Cofield of Ft. Bragg; three brothers, James L. Wiggins of Portsmouth, Va., David B. Wiggins of Rich Square and Kenneth A. Wiggins of Ahoskie; and five sisters, Maxine L. Perry of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Ruth Jennings of Raleigh, Bonnie B. Morgan of Ahoskie, Nyoka M. Green of Ahoskie and Monica Myrick of Como.

Thurman T. White

AHOSKIE – Thurman Tracy White 65, a native of Bertie County, died August 6, 2005.

White was a member of Hickory Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, a retired fireman with Ahoskie Fire Department, one of the original members of Ahoskie Rescue Squad, and a former dispatcher for the Ahoskie Police Department.

A graveside service was conducted Monday in Highland Memorial Gardens by with Rev. Robert M. May. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, was in charge.

Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Pritchard of Powellsville, Jean White of Windsor and Tracy Lynne Conner and Joy Davenport, both of Aulander; two sisters, Rose Blowe of Aulander and Julie White of Ahoskie; one brother, Tommy White of Winton; 14 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

W.S. Creecy Jr.

RICH SQUARE n W.S. Creecy Jr., Retired Principal of W.S. Creecy School in Rich Square, died on Friday, August 5. He was 92.

During his tenure of forty years as principal, he left a legacy of excellence in education, the impact of which has been felt nationwide.

Professor Creecy sought the good in everyone. Always concerned about improving the human condition, he selflessly extended himself to family, friends, and strangers.

He was active in numerous church, civic and community activities from which he received many honors and awards.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Francine Moore Creecy; two sons, William and Robert; grandchildren: Leah and Wil; great-grandson: Justin; brother: Hollis, Sr., and many relatives and friends.

Service Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Rich Square, NC. The Reverend William Clark, officiating. Burial will be in the First Baptist Church Cemetery, Rich Square. Visitation: Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 1 to 8 p.m. at the Lionel Whidbee Funeral Home, Rich Square.

AHOSKIE n Mrs. Phardalis Wiggins, died August 7, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Eugene Sutton

WINDSOR n Eugene Sutton, a native of Windsor, died August 2, 2005.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Bazemore Temple Church of God in Christ by Elder Maurice Davenport Sr. Burial was in the church cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge.

Sutton was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma B. Sutton; two daughters, Mary Sutton Thompson of Syracuse, N.Y., and Gloria Freeman of Windsor; three sons, George Bond Jr. of Windsor, Robert Bond of Windsor and Chesapeake, Va., and James Bond Sr. of Windsor; 13 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.

Walter Hall

AHOSKIE n Walter Hall, 58, a native of Hertford County, died August 6, 2005 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carpenter Shop Church, Ahoskie, by Pastor Wallace Phillips. Burial will be in Carver's Park Cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Hall was a carpenter. He attended Carpenter Shop Church.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Hall of Como; three daughters, LaWanda Hall of Ahoskie, Wendy Hall of Como and Nickie Roscoe of Gatesville; two sisters, Maxine Robinson of Hampton, Va., and Terri Caldwell of Fayetteville; one brother, Ricky Britt of Ahoskie; and four granddaughters.

Ruth B. Dempsey

NORFOLK, Va. n Ruth Bizzell Dempsey, died July 31, 2005 in Los Angeles, Calif.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Dempsey was a member of St. Thomas AMEZ Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Carole Bizzell Mussa of Los Angeles; and two sisters, Ella Bowe of New York City and Eliza Bailey of Atlanta, Ga.
