AHOSKIE – A Virginia teen faces a slew of charges after allegedly attempting to outrun local law enforcement officials here Saturday.

Lindsey Coleman, 18, of Newport News, Va. was jailed under a $22,000 secured bond after leading Hertford County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Cofield and Winton Police Chief David Griffith on a chase that exceeded 100 mph.

That chase ended a mile north of Ahoskie on U.S. 13 where the 1994 Lincoln operated by Coleman ran off the road and struck a ditch.

&uot;We’re all just so happy that no one was injured in this incident,&uot; Griffith said. &uot;There was an outdoor party going on at the residence where the accident occurred. Those people were put in harm’s way. They could have very easily been injured.&uot;

Griffith initiated the chase when he spotted Coleman’s vehicle traveling south on U.S. 13 at 75 mph. Meanwhile, Deputy Cofield, stationed on U.S. 13 just a few miles south, was just finishing up a traffic stop when he heard Griffith’s call for assistance.

Cofield clocked Coleman at 102 mph and then joined Griffith on the chase.

Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in Coleman’s vehicle. The passengers, both in the back seat, were a 24-year-old female, also from Newport News, and the woman’s five-year-old daughter.

The vehicle was registered to Sandra Pounds of Newport News, Va.

Griffith charged Coleman with speeding (75 mph in a 55 mph zone) and no operator’s license.

North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Nick Harrison filed careless & reckless, exceeding the post speed limit and driving left of center charges against Coleman.

Cofield lodged eight charges against the Virginia teen – felony speed to elude arrest, driving 102 mph in a 55 mph zone, failure to stop for blue light and siren, careless & reckless driving, possession of spirituous liquor by a person less than 21, transporting spirituous liquor by a person less than 21, child restraint violation and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Griffith thanked the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office and the Ahoskie Police Department for their assistance.
