AHOSKIE – The numbers are in and Roanoke-Chowan Community College is able to boast of measuring up against other two-year institutions in the statewide system.

RCCC’s Board of Trustees and several of the college’s staff watched a Power Point presentation on Tuesday evening that told them exactly how the facility measured up compared with other North Carolina community colleges.

Dr. Claude Odom, Chairman of the Board, was pleased with the overall performance measures, but said that the college still has work to do in order to meet the benchmarks of success used by the N.C. Community College System (NCCCS).

There was only one area in which the college, as noted by Dr. Odom, was well below the standard measure. That was in the area of College Transfer Student Performance. While the system average is 83 percent, the NCCCS revealed a 67 percent rate for RCCC. However, RCCC is not alone as only 36 percent of NC colleges met the standard, as shown in the Power Point presentation.

In other areas of the college’s performance levels, they achieved a rate of 74 percent of success in Basic Skills Student Progress, while the standard is 75 percent. Statewide, 97 percent of colleges met the standard.

In one area in particular, RCCC’s faculty and staff, as well as students, can take pride in their excellence. The college’s performance measure of Licensure/Certification Exam Passing Rate, or the number of exams with a passing rate, was 87 percent, well above the standard of 80 percent and the system average of 85 percent. Eighty-six percent of colleges in the state make the standard.

This marks the first time RCCC has met the standard in that area. In 1999-2000 they scored only 74 percent. Last year, that rate stood at 79 percent.

RCCC focuses on meeting the existing and future needs of the workforce for area businesses and industries, and their Continuing Education and Workforce Development Division continues to meet those needs through courses offered by the college.

A whopping 91 percent was the score for the Emergency Medical Technician course at the college. That’s well above the standard of 70 percent, and the system average of 83 percent.

RCCC’s Practical Nursing is a standout among other community colleges across the state. While the standard is 70 percent, and the system average is 96 percent, RCCC scored a laudable 100 percent in this course.

The Registered Nursing program also scored well, with an 83 percent performance rating against the standard of 70 percent.

In the area of Graduate Goal Completion, RCCC scored a 100 percent performance with the standard set at 95 percent.

The college is also above the 60 percent performance measure standard with respect to Curriculum Student Retention and Graduation. The system average is 65 percent and RCCC stands at exactly that number.

As Dr. Odom pointed out through the presentation, employers are pleased with RCCC graduates. Figures in the Power Point program show the college is consistently above the standard of 85 percent with scores in the 90 percent range since 20001-02.

In the area of Business/Industry Satisfaction with Customized Training, RCCC turned out students who put the college at a 100 percent performance measure while the standard is set at 90 percent.

RCCC is doing well in producing graduates of its GED course, with 10 graduating and earning their Business Administration certificates in a program at Odom Prison. Linda B. Alexander, Dean of Academic Affairs, is currently working with personnel at the prison to expand program offerings at that site.

Johnnie Reid, a member of RCCC’s Board of Trustees appointed by Hertford County Schools, attended the graduation ceremony at Odom.

&uot;Someone could have told me about it, but it was not the same as being there,&uot; said Reid. &uot;It was very rewarding. Very moving.&uot;

The next meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for 7 p.m., Aug. 23.
