Braxton T. Eure

LIVE OAK, Fla. n Braxton T. Eure, 73, a native of Gates County, died June 10, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Stoney Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry Boone. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include a son, Darryl Eure of Japan; two brothers, Claude Eure of Eure and Vernon Eure of Newsom, Va.; one sister, Roberta Parker of Gates; and three grandchildren.

James S. Cocke Sr.

JACKSON nJames Scott Cocke, Sr., 75, a native of Northampton County, died June 15, 2005 at Wake Memorial Hospital in Raleigh. He was the widower of his first wife, Elizabeth "Smitty" Cocke.

Cocke was a veteran United States Army. He owned and operated J.S. Cocke's Garage in Jackson for forty years. He was a former member of the Jackson Volunteer Fire Department and former member of the Jackson Lions Club. He was a member of the Jackson Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Wheeler Cocke of the home, two daughters, Elizabeth Betsy Galloway of Lenoir and Angeline Silvers of St. Petersburg, FL; one son, Jim Cocke, Jr. of Jackson; one stepdaughter, Vicki Flythe of Conway; and one stepson, Jimmy Wheeler of Jackson; three granddaughters; and three stepgrandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jackson United Methodist Church by the Rev. Paul Lee and the Rev. Joe McLean. Burial will be in Jackson Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jackson United Methodist Church Building Fund, PO Box 782, Jackson, NC 27845. Sykes Funeral Service of Rich Square is in charge.

Bettie Lewter

AULANDER n Bettie Jean Boone Lewter, 80, a native of Northampton County, died June 15, 2005 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Rich Square First Baptist Church by the Rev. William C. Clark. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Lewter was retired from Don's Mfg. Company, Rich Square. She was a member of Rich Square First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Doris Nixon of Knightdale and Alice Pool of Durham; sons, Gregory Lewter of Clinton, Md., James Lewter of Aulander and William Lewter of Hampton, Va.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

William Small Sr.

WINDSOR n William A. Small Sr., 72, died June 15, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Cedar Landing Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Small family cemetery. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor.

Barbara Taylor

WYTHEVILLE, Va. – Barbara Cravens Taylor, of Wytheville, VA, a former schoolteacher of Ahoskie, NC, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2005 while vacationing in the Wilmington, NC area with her family.

Barbara was born in Macon, GA, daughter of the late Harold and Nancy Cravens. She grew up in Pineville, KY and graduated from Union College in Barbourville, KY.

She taught school in Barbourville, KY, Staunton, VA, Wytheville, VA and Ahoskie, NC, retiring after 40 years. She and her husband, Bo, returned to Wytheville to spend their final years in the town they loved so dearly. She was an active member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Wytheville Women's Club and several bridge clubs. Barbara was also a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ulmont Reed "Bo" Taylor; brother, Harold Cravens, Jr. and half-brother, J.L. Cravens.

She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert and Deanna Stephens Taylor of Aylett, VA, Harold and Sonia Taylor of Wilmington, NC and Michael Taylor of Lawrenceville, GA;

five grandchildren, Lee Taylor, Reed Taylor and wife Magfirah, Shelley Taylor, Spencer Taylor, and Eva Taylor;

one sister and two brothers-in-law, Patricia and Robert Green of Oak Ridge, TN and William and Janelle Dishman of Danville, KY; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, June 19, 2005 at 3 pm in the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Donald Stansell officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 pm until service time.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made in memory of Barbara to Wythe County Historical Society, c/o Martha Umberger, 361 Laurel Run, Wytheville, VA 24382 or the Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, NC.

James W. Waters

POWELLSVILLE – James Edmund Waters, 77, died at Guardian Care of Ahoskie on June 16, 2005, following an extended illness.

Mr. Waters was born on April 4, 1928 in Bertie County and was involved in the construction business for the majority of his life and retired from Perdue Farms as a garage manager.

He served in the U. S. Army during World War II with the 82nd Airborne and was an active and lifelong member of Powellsville Baptist Church.

He was also a member of American George Masonic Lodge #17 AF & AM in Murfreesboro and the Powellsville Scrub Club.

Mr. Waters is survived by his wife, Shirley Blowe Waters of the home; a daughter, Donna W. Farless and husband, Roland of Edenton; three sons, Merrill Waters and wife, Cecille, Gerald Waters and wife, Rhetta, both of Powellsville, Clark Waters and wife, Nancy of Orlando, FL; step-daughters, Denise Thompson and husband, Dave of St. John, Jennifer Peede and friend, Tom Ware of Greenville; a sister, Cora Leigh W. Newbern of Colerain; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Addie Waters; his first wife, Celia White Waters; and sisters, Helen Rae Waters and Merelynn W. Baker.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, June 20, 2005, at 11:00 a.m.

at Garrett Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, with burial to follow in Stoney Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home.

Grizzie Britton

MARGARETTSVILLE n Mrs. Grizzie Blythe Britton, age 98, of Tower Rd., Margarettsville, NC died June 17, 2005 at her home.

Mrs. Britton was born September 21, 1906 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late William Joseph Blythe and Mattie Lewter Blythe. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry Grady Britton, Sr. She was a member of Galatia Baptist Church, a loving mother, grandmother and friend.

Survivors include her sons, Henry G. Britton, Jr. and his wife, Julia, William J. "Billy" Britton and his wife, Mildred, and Ellis Britton and his wife, Shelby; her brother, Aubrey Blythe of Conway, NC; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Two special caregivers, Helen Brown and Theresa Gay.

Funeral services will be held, Sunday, June 19, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Galatia Baptist Church with the Rev. David Foster officiating. Burial will follow at the Britton Family Homeplace Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Saturday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home.

Survivors include five sisters, Blannie Grant and Clementine Grant, both of White Plains, NY, Carrie Roane of Richmond, Va., Helen Bell and Katie Grant, both of Woodland; and one brother, Ernest C. Grant of Conway.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Woodland, by Pastor Vinson and the Rev. John T. Grant. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

LEWISTON n George W. Lee, died June 16, 2005.

KELFORD n Archie Bond Sr., died June 14, 2005 at St. Luke Pentecostal Healing Temple, Lewiston.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at St. Luke Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A wake will be held from 6-7 p.m. Monday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie.

Survivors include a son, Archie C. Bond Jr.; one sister, Hattie Mosley of Winton; and four grandchildren.
