POTECASI n Carolina E. "Mrs. Linnie: Horton, 94, a native of Northampton County, died June 4, 2005 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Second Baptist Potecasi Church by the Rev. Melvin Roberts. Burial will be in the Edwards family cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Murfreesboro, is in charge.

Mrs. Horton was a homemaker and a gardener. She was a member of Second Baptist Potecasi Church, Chaplain of Ladies Auxiliary of VFW, Blue Star Christian Organization and Sunday School teacher for 40 years.

Survivors include a son, Leroy Edwards of

Potecasi; a daughter, Madessa Early of Oxen Hill, Md.; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Emma R. Sykes

ENFIELD n Emma Ruth Sykes, 70, died at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC on Sunday, June 5, 2005. Mrs. Sykes was a native of Halifax County. She was a graduate of Enfield Graded School. After graduation she attended St. Mary's College and East Carolina University. Following college, she worked for her father at his dentist office until his death. Mrs. Sykes was married to Faris C. Sykes, Jr. for forty-five years. She sung in the choir at the Enfield Baptist Church for most of her adult life. She will be remembered as a very loving mother with a wonderful sense of humor, a very special "Nana" to her grandchildren, and a treasured individual in her community.

Mrs. Sykes is preceded in death by her father, Dr. Marvin Earle Herman. She is survived by her mother, Huldah B. Herman, Enfield, NC, her husband, Faris C. Sykes, Jr., Enfield, NC, her three sons, Skipper Sykes and his wife Laura, Nashville, NC, Earle Sykes, Rocky Mount, NC, Scott Sykes and his wife Sarah, Scotland Neck, NC and five grandchildren, Collins, Shelly, Sarah Gregory, Travis and John Colby Sykes.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Enfield Baptist Church on Thursday, June 9, 2005, at 2 PM with the Rev. Dallas Prestwood and the Rev. Mark Sanders officiating. The burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield, NC.

The family received friends at Bowling Funeral Home in Enfield, NC on Wednesday evening from 7-8:30.

ROCKY MOUNT n Melvin Walker, 77, died June 3, 2005 at South Village.

A visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Rocky Mount Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Mark AME Church, Rocky Mount, by the Rev. Melvin Graham. Interment will be held in Gardens of Gethsemane.

Susie B. Mitchell

MURFREESBORO n Susie Barnes Mitchell, 96, a native of Northampton County, died June 6, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 pm. Friday at First Baptist Church Severn by Pastor Elisha Barnes. Burial will be in West End Cemetery, Murfreesboro. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen Mitchell Barnes of Murfreesboro; a brother, Jackson Barnes of Murfreesboro; a sister, Verlie Ridley of Norristown, Pa.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Oscar Gilcrest Sr.

HARRELLSVILLE n Oscar Johnson Gilcrest Sr., 91, a native of Ft. Mills, S.C., died June 6, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A memorial service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Lewiston, by the Rev. Dr. James E. Jones Jr. Cherry's Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Gilcrest was retired. He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret T. Gilcrest of the home; one son; and four daughters.

EDENTON – Carrie Dail Dillard, 82, died June 2, 2005.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Refreshing Center Church of God in Christ, Windsor. Rowsom Funeral Home was in charge.

James J. McClenney

SUFFOLK, Va. – James Joseph McClenney, 86, a native of Gatesville, died June 6, 2005, at Obici Hospital.

McClenney was retired as a master machinist, technical engineer at Planters and served in the Navy in World War II. He was a member of Magnolia United Methodist Church, the Savage Sunday School class, the United Methodist Men and a former member of the Prime Time Singers.

Survivors include his wife, Viola Bunch McClenney; daughter, Patricia M. Byrum of Powhatan; son, Gerald Lee McClenney of Suffolk; sisters, Evelyn Oliver and Martha Griggs, both of Suffolk, Gladys Boyd of Georgia; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Magnolia United Methodist Church by the Rev. Michael Derflinger. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. R.W. Baker & Co. LEWISTON n James Edward Johnson Sr., 66, a native of Bertie County, died June 7, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Wilder's Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander, by the Rev. Eugene Harris. Burial will be in the Watson Family Cemetery, Kelford.

Johnson was retired from Harrington Manufacturing Co. in Lewiston.
