Jean M. Morris

AHOSKIE – Jean Modlin Morris 79, of the 100 Block of Berkley Rd., died June 11, 2005 at Vintage Inn Williamston, N.C.

Mrs. Morris was a native of Portsmouth, Va., the daughter of the late Henry Grady Modlin and Willie Dilday Modlin, and was the widow of Joseph Wingate Morris and was also predeceased by a brother, William Grady Modlin. She was a retired bookkeeper for Riddick and Urquhart CPA and Pittard Perry And Crone Inc. CPA. She was a member of First Baptist Church Ahoskie, and a member of the Ahoskie Book Club.

Surviving is a daughter, Marsha Jo Morris, Greenville, N.C.

A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2005, at Garrett Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Jesse J. Croom officiating. Burial followed in Ahoskie Cemetery. The family received friends at the residence, and memorial donations may be made to Heritage and Hope Endowment C/O First Baptist Church Ahoskie P. O. Box 649 Ahoskie, N. C.

Ruth P. Chamblee

AHOSKIE -Ruth Perry Chamblee 85, of the 200 block of N.C. Highway 561 East, died June 12, 2005 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Mrs. Chamblee was a native of Bertie County, N.C., the daughter of the late Vandy and Bert Hobbs Perry, a retired sales clerk at Ahoskie Department Store, a member of Creech Memorial Baptist Church and a graduate of Murfreesboro High School, where she was Valedictorian.

Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Harold Wright Chamblee; two daughters, Jane Chamblee Chitty and her husband Aubrey, Winterville, N.C.; Gloria Chamblee Cobb and her husband Jeff, Winterville, N.C.: one sister, Alice Gatling, Murfreesboro, N.C.; a grandson, Payton Wright Chitty and his wife Heather, Wilmington, N.C., a granddaughter, Paige Chitty Cassidy, of Fredericksburg, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Payton Aubrey Chitty, Wilmington, N.C; Bryant Edward Cassidy, Fredericksburg, Va.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at Garrett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Ravin and Rev. Robert May officiating, with burial to follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday and other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to Creech Memorial Baptist Church 501 South Lloyd St. Ahoskie, N.C. 27910.

Faris C. Sykes

ENFIELD n Faris Collins Sykes, Jr., 74, died at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC on Saturday, June 11, 2005. Mr. Sykes was a native of Enfield, NC. He graduated from Enfield Graded School then served two years in Germany with the US Army.

Mr. Sykes was a 1956 graduate of the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in Dallas, Texas. He worked with Branch Funeral Homes, Inc. for 48 years and retired as general manager. Mr. Sykes was a member of the North Carolina State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors from 1968-1976 serving as President in 1974. He was a member of the North Carolina State Board of Mortuary Science from 1979-1983 serving as President in 1983. Mr. Sykes served on the National Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards for the United States and Canada representing North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi as the Secretary and Treasurer in 1983, Vice President in 1984, and President in 1985. Mr. Sykes had the honor of being the keynote speaker at his son, Scott's graduation from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta, Georgia in 1985. He was a lifetime member of the Enfield Baptist Church. He was married to Emma Ruth Herman Sykes for forty-five years. Mr. Sykes will be remembered as a very loving husband and father, a dedicated man to the funeral profession both locally and nationally, a very special "Paw

Paw" to his grandchildren, and a treasured individual in his community.

Mr. Sykes is preceded in death by his mother, Lilla Sledge Sykes, his father, Faris Collins Sykes, Sr., just recently his wife, Emma Ruth Sykes, his sisters, Anita Sykes Martin and Irma Sykes Babson, his brothers; J.W. Sykes and Norwood Sykes.

He is survived by his three sons; Skipper Sykes and his wife, Laura of Nashville, NC, Earle Sykes of Rocky Mount, NC, Scott Sykes and his wife, Sarah of Scotland Neck, NC, his brothers, Mason "Boozie" Sykes of Enfield, NC and Marlan W. Sykes and his wife, Shelby of Chesapeake, VA, five grandchildren, Collins, Shelly, Sarah Gregory, Travis and John Colby Sykes, his mother-in-law, Huldah B. Herman of Enfield, NC, his sister-in-law, Doris H. Smith of Rocky Mount, NC, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Enfield Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dallas Prestwood and the Rev. Marc Sanders officiating. The burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield, NC.

The family received friends at Bowling Funeral Home in Enfield, NC on Monday evening from 7-8:30 p.m.

Ila M. Liverman

UNION n Mrs. Ila Liverman, age 79, of Union, NC, died June 11, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Mrs. Liverman was born March 9, 1926 in Hertford County, NC, the daughter of the late Lloyd Wingate Minton, Sr. and Earleen Simons Minton Pearce. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Celvin Liverman Sr., a brother, Lloyd W. Minton, Jr., and a grandson, Lewis Scott Surgeon.

Mrs. Liverman was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church where she had served in many offices including past Sunday School director, Sunday School teacher, GA Leader and at one time was a Cub Scott Leader in her community.

Survivors include her daughters, Juanita Liverman Surgeon and her husband, Lewis of Windsor, NC and Cindy Liverman Morris and her husband, Tommy of Union; her son, Ernest Celvin Liverman, Jr. and his wife, Jackie of Leavenworth, Kansas; her sisters, Retha Riemer of Hanahan, S.C., Selene Thomas and Ardeen Barnes, both of Portsmouth, Va., and Wilma Smith of Cofield, NC; a brother, Malery Minton of Chesapeake, Va.; four grandchildren, Christopher Surgeon, Debbie Shahegh, Bryan Liverman and Laura Renee Morris; and one great-grandson, Christopher Scott Surgeon.

Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Miller and the Rev. Curtis Pixler officiating. Burial will follow at Ahoskie Cemetery.

The family received friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC Monday from 7 until 8:30 p.m.

ROCKY MOUNT n Anna Ruth Hunter, 80, died June 9, 2005 at Guardian Care, Rocky Mount.

A visitation will be conducted Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Rocky Mount Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at Greater Mount Hermon Baptist Church by the Rev. Dennis Gunter. Interment will be in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery, Nashville.

Virginia Bryan

WOODLAND n Virginia Elizabeth Lee Bryan, 88, a native of Hertford County, died June 11, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. She was the widow of George Allen Bryan Sr.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Rich Square, by the Rev. Bob Deacon. Sykes Funeral Service, Inc., is in charge.

Survivors include two daughters, Nora Rawls of Aulander and Marie Harrison of Woodland; three sons, George Bryant Jr. of Hobgood, Joe Bryant of Woodland and Jimmy Bryan of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Doris Gilliam of Chesapeake; one brother, James Lee of Winton; 15 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Howard Jordan Jr.

MERRY HILL n Howard Junious "Puddy Head" Jordan Jr., died June 12, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Thursday at Oxley Hill Baptist Church, Merry Hill. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

He is survived by his wife, Hester Jordan of Merry Hill; and son stepson, James Lee of Cofield.

Mamie L. Perry

COLERAIN n Mamie Lois Perry, died June 11, 2005.

Cecil W. Futrell

CONWAY n Mr. Cecil Winston Futrell, age 86, of US Hwy. 258, Conway, died June 12, 2005 at Autumn Care in Rich Square, NC.

Mr. Futrell was born Oct. 7, 1918, the son of the late Cephus Futrell and Eva Joyner Futrell. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Jason Futrell and a sister, Elsie Patterson. He was retired from Nu-Car Carriers, with thirty-three years of service, after which he owned C & R Store near Conway for many years and was a farmer. He was a member of Ashley's Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of almost 63 years, Rennie Jernigan Futrell; his children, Phyllis F. Blowe and her husband, Dwight, Libby F. Joyner and her husband, Dennis, Winston Futrell and his wife, Darlene, all of Conway, NC; his brother, Archie B. Futrell of Myrtle Beach, SC; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Harris and her husband, Frank, Steven Joyner and his wife, Amanda, Beth and Samantha Joyner, Nancy Taylor and her husband, Mike, Phyllis Ann Futrell and Shannon Kent.

Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at 4 p.m. at Ashley's Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. David Ross officiating. Burial will follow at Ashley's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Woodland Rescue Squad, Woodland, NC or the Masonic Orphanage, Oxford, NC.
