Flossie Vaughan

NORFOLK, Va. – Flossie Vaughan, 94, a native of Conway, died May 19, 2005.

Mrs. Vaughan was a member of First Baptist Church Campostella.

Survivors include two sons, Clinton Boone and Columbus Boone; a daughter, Carolyn Giles; three sisters, Lizzie Beale and Gradie Hills, both of Norfolk, and Erma Flythe of Pendleton; a brother, Leroy Meggett of Conway; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday in First Baptist Church Campostella. Interment will be at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake, is in charge.

Gail W. Hinton

SUFFOLK, Va. – Gail Walters Hinton, 53, a native of Newport News, died May 23, 2005, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.

Mrs. Hinton was a kindergarten and Early Start teacher in the Suffolk City School System for 31 years. She was also a member of Berea Christian Church and the National Educators Association.

Survivors include her husband, Lonnie Carter Hinton; a son, Deshler Thomas Davies of Suffolk; two daughters, Nikki Hinton Jensen of Meridian, Idaho, and Lisa Hinton Hudgins of Eure; her parents, Seth T. and Linda Lucas Walters of Suffolk; a brother, Steve T. Walters of Suffolk.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday in Liberty Spring Christian Church by the Rev. Allen Lancaster. Burial was in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to Berea Christian Church, 4109 Driver Lane, Suffolk, VA 23435.

Cecil Hayes

FRANKLIN, Va. – Cecil Edward Hayes, 62, died May 21, 2005, at Louise Obici Hospital.

Hayes was an Army veteran and a team crew operator in the sheet finishing department of International Paper. He was a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church, Como, and the Como Ruritan Club.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara B. &uot;Ginger&uot; Hayes; his mother, Elizabeth Griffith Hayes of Como; a daughter, Melisa Rene Hayes of Gloversville, N.Y.; a son, Ryan Edward Hayes of Franklin; and a grandson.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Buckhorn Baptist Church. Burial with military honors followed in the church cemetery. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Buckhorn Baptist Church Steeple Fund, P.O. Box 67, Como, NC 27818. Wright Funeral Home was in charge.

William Taylor, Jr.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. n William J. "Bill" Taylor, Jr., 72, of the 1400 block of Hazel Avenue, went to be with the Lord on May 23, 2005.

A native of Tunis, NC, he was the son of the late William James Taylor, Sr. and Edith Spivey Taylor. He was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church and a former member of Indian River Baptist Church where he was a deacon, Sunday School teacher and bus driver. He had a servant's heart and was willing to help in any way that he was needed. An Air Force veteran, he retired after 25 years as a truck driver with Colonial Stores. He was the owner of Taylor General Hauling, Inc. for 15 years.

Surviving are his beloved wife of almost 47 years, Merilyn Ann White Taylor; two daughters, Mary Anne Taylor Knox, and Eddie Kernodle and her husband, Larry, all of Virginia Beach; two sons, William James "Billy" Taylor, III and his wife, Stacie of Ahoskie, NC, and Tom Taylor of Norfolk; two brothers, Alva "Dink" Taylor of Chesapeake and Carroll Taylor and his wife, Nancy of Tunis, NC; grandchildren, Danny Taylor of Ahoskie; Dalton and Lani Kernodle and Caroline and Charles Knox, all of Virginia Beach; and one great-grandchild, Hailey Foster of Ahoskie, NC. He was predeceased in death by a grandson, Travis Kernodle.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake with the Rev. Larry Ryals officiating. Clarence Debraux

RICH SQUARE n Clarence Debraux, 68, died May 20, 2005.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Branches Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Tony Flood. Burial was in the Moore family cemetery, Rich Square. Smith-Whidbee Funeral Home was in charge.

Annette Peebles

EURE n Annette Ann Arline Peebles, 39, a native of Gates County, died May 19, 2005 at her residence.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Lebanon Grove Baptist Church by Bishop Thomas Lee. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Ahoskie, was in charge.

Mrs. Peebles was with security at Perdue. She was a member of Greater Wynn's Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Lee Peebles of Ahoskie; her mother, Alma Louise Arline of Eure; three daughters, Shreeka Simone Arline of Eure, Eboni S. Moye of Greenville and Corsheena Sutton of Oxen Hill, Md.; her grandmother, Erma Weaver; two sisters, Shirelle A. Boone of Gates and Dorethea A. Lassiter of Gatesville; and one grandchild.

John M. Thomas Sr.

WINDSOR n John Michael Thomas Sr., 84, a native of Bertie County, died May 24, 2005 at his home. He was the widower of Mary Iris Castellow Thomas.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. Dave Thompson. Military rites will be observed. The family will receive friends at the residence. Thomas was a retired farmer and a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Republican Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Cindy Thomas Massey and Kay Thomas; a son, J. Michael Thomas Jr., all of Windsor; two sisters, Daisy T. Younce of Washington and Helen T. Hoggard of Aulander; and two grandchildren.

COLERAIN n Tashawn Devonta Taylor, six-months-old, a native of Hertford County, died May 21, 2005 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Carpenter's Shop Church, Ahoskie, by Pastor Wallace Phillips. Burial will be in the Wilder-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include his mother, Kashena LaToya Perry of Colerain; his father, Shontell Taylor of Colerain; sisters, Laneisha Perry and Melanie Taylor, both of Colerain; grandmothers, Maxine Perry of Colerain, Shelia Taylor of Harrellsville and Marshell Valentine of Elizabeth City; grandfather, Wayne Morris of Virginia; and great-grandparents, Solona Perry of Colerain, Lois Keemer of Ahoskie,

Millie Battle

ROCKY MOUNT n Millie Battle, 79, died May 23, 2005 at Guardian Care, Rocky Mount.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Friday at Red Budd Holy Church, Rocky Mount, by Bishop F.C. Barnes. Interment will be in Marks Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Hollie Bailey

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Hollie Bridgers Futrell Bailey, 74, a native of Northampton County, died May 23, 2005 at her home. She was the widow of William Randolph Futrell and Sheriff William "Bill" C. Bailey.

A graveside service was conducted Wednesday at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Rich Square, by the Rev.C. Foy Bradshaw. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Church of the Saviour, Jackson, NC or Rich Square Baptist Church, Rich Square, NC. Massey Funeral Home was in charge.

Survivors include a son, William Randolph Futrell of Jackson; a brother, Clemmon Winfield Bridgers of Jackson; her stepchildren, Barbara Bailey Garner of Roanoke Rapids, Mike Bailey of Raleigh and Kathy Bailey Bennett of North Wilksboro; three grandchildren; and seven step-grandchildren.

Arrajah Jordan

WINTON n Arrajah Daniel Jordan, 78, a native of Hertford County, died May 23, 2005 at his residence.

Survivors include sisters and brothers, Joe Henry Jordan of Newport News, Va., Annie Eley of Winton, Geraldine Banks of Cofield, Dorothy Parks of Raleigh and Josephine Jarrett of Durham; and one grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton. Burial will be in South Winton Cemetery.

Mazzie Harrell

AHOSKIE n Mazzie Harrell, died May 24, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include one daughter, Janice Smith of Ahoskie; 34 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; many great-great and great-great-great-grandchildren.

Sadie Futrell

AHOSKIE n Sadie Arlene Futrell, 67, a native of Hertford County, died May 22, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday at Newsome Grove Baptist Church by Pastor Richard Smallwood. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her children, Jerry Futrell of Ahoskie, Stacy Futrell of Murfreesboro, and Demetrius Futrell of East Orange, N.J.; sisters Doris Valentine of Newark, NJ, Ernestine McGlone of Dover, DE and Victoria Swain of East Orange; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
