WINDSOR – First Flight sent Bertie to yet another one-run loss here Monday evening.

The Nighthawks scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning on a Buddy Carlson two-out RBI-single as First Flight topped Bertie 2-1 in a Northeastern Coastal Conference baseball game.

In the bottom of the first with two out, Matthew Schwab singled to leftfield and went to second on an Austin Lawrence single. On a Brian Mizelle single to right field, Schwab was thrown out at home.

Bertie scored their only run in the bottom of the third inning. Schwab singled to left and Lawrence singled to center. Both advanced on a wild pitch. Schwab then scored on a Mizelle sacrifice fly to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

The final Bertie threat came in the bottom of the fifth inning.

With one out, Matt White and Schwab reached on back-to-back errors before a pitch hit Lawrence, loading the bases. A strikeout and a flyout ended the threat.

First Flight scored their first run in the top of the sixth inning on a wild pitch. That run tied the game at 1-all.

The Nighthawks scored the game-winner in the seventh on Colson’s single.

Schwab pitched five and one-third innings, allowing one run on four hits. He had 13 strikeouts.

Lance Thomas pitched the final one and two-third innings for the loss.

&uot;Matthew pitched well enough to win,&uot; BHS coach Randy Whitaker said. &uot;Both First Flight runs were unearned, but the key is we couldn’t get the key hits with runners in scoring position. We just left too many on base.&uot;

The Falcons dropped to 4-18 overall and 1-11 inside the league.
