WINDSOR – Sophomore southpaw Hunter Mizelle hurled a one-hit shutout here Thursday.

That was good enough to lead Bertie High School to their first varsity baseball victory of 2006.

The Falcons scored all 11 of their runs in the bottom of the first inning.

O.J. Dobbin led off by reaching on a dropped third strike and then went to third when Corey Hoggard got on via an error. Hoggard stole second putting the duo in a position to score on Lance Thomas’ two-RBI single to right.

Thomas scored when he stole second and third and came across on a wild pitch.

Aaron Hoggard, Mizelle and Matt White had consecutive singles to load the bases.

Aaron Hoggard scored on a Brent Bowen RBI-single and Mizelle came home on an error on the play.

White and Bowen then scored on a Charlie Castelloe two-run single to center before Cory Hoggard hit a two-run homer to centerfield.

Thomas kept the inning alive when he doubled to right in front of a Jed Hughes walk. They both scored on an Aaron Hoggard two-RBI double to right to give the Falcons an 11-0 lead.

BHS had nine hits in the first inning and finished the contest with 10.

Defensively, the Falcons turned a double play in the fifth to keep Tarboro off the board.

Mizelle started and went five innings for the win, allowing no runs and one hit while striking out seven.

Thomas and Aaron Hoggard led the Falcons offensively as they were each 2-for-3.

&uot;We came out and hit the ball, scoring 11 runs in the first inning,&uot; veteran Bertie skipper Randy Whitaker said. &uot;Hunter threw a good game. He threw strikes.

&uot;It feels good to get our first win,&uot; he added. &uot;The kids have been working hard and we are improving every day.&uot;

The Falcons (1-4) will travel to Plymouth Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
