Danny W. Brown

AULANDER n Danny William Brown, 24, a native of Hertford County, died April 22, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral was conducted Monday at the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home by the Rev. Jay Lassiter. Burial was in Cedarlawn Cemetery, Rich Square with military honors.

Brown was employed as a correctional officer with Odom Prison and a veteran of Iraq with the U.S. Army. Danny was presently attached to the 120th H Q Company of the 30 H S. B. National Guard in Wilmington.

Survivors include his mother, Jane R. Brown; brothers, Jerry Brown and Robert Bishop and Richard Tibbs, all of Aulander.

Nettie L. Wilkins

AHOSKIE n Nettie Lee Wilkins, died April 20, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, Ahoskie. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home Inc., Ahoskie, was in charge.

Survivors include two sons, Lewis Wilkins and George Wilkins Sr., both of Ahoskie; four daughters, Ruth Wilkins, Callistine Wilkins, Nettie Diane Curry and Evelyn Wilkins, all of Ahoskie; four brothers, Nelson Lee of Colerain, Frank Lee of Ahoskie, Joseph Lee of Powellsville and Willie Lee of Cleveland, Ohio; four sisters, Blannie Riddick, Queen Ester Slade and Gracie Freeman, all of Ahoskie and Irene Lee of Aulander; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Garland C. Harrell

HERTFORD – Garland Cecil Harrell, 78, of the 100 block of Matthews St., died Sunday morning, April 24, 2005, in Albemarle Hospital.

Born in Hertford County, N.C., he was the son of the late Henry Cecil and Ima Joyner Harrell.

Harrell retired after 25 years as manager of the Pepsi Cola Bottling Plant in Ahoskie and later worked as sanitation director with the Hertford County Sanitation Dept.

He was a member of Burgess Baptist Church, Hertford and was a lifetime member of St. John Baptist Church in Aulander where he served as deacon, Sunday school superintendent and teacher.

Mr. Harrell was a founding member of St. John Volunteer Fire Dept., and served as its chief from 1964 until 1972. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the Philippines.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Ellen Wynn Harrell; two daughters, Debra R. Muuse and husband, John of Southport, N.C., and Jacqueline Kaye Harrell of Cary; a son, Garland Scott Harrell of Elizabeth City; two sisters, Ada B. Felton and her companion Henry of Eure and Laura J. Harrell of Aulander; three brothers and their wives, M. Hunter Harrell and Kitty of Lakeland, Fla., James G. Harrell and Dot and Donald S. Harrell and Carolyn, all of Aulander; a grandchild, Aimee Leigh Robbins of Southport; a week-old great-grandchild, Gabriel Andrew Robbins of Southport and a former son-in-law, Robert Thomas Robbins of Southport.

The family will received friends Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie.

Robert L. Howell

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Robert Lee Howell, 90,

a native of Como, died April 23, 2005. Mr. Howell was a retired supervisor from T.O. Williams Meat Packing Co. after more than 45 years of service. He was longtime member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church where he served on the deacon board of the church for more than 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Valeria Howell; three sons, Robert O. &uot;Bob&uot; Howell of Suffolk, Joseph E. &uot;Joe&uot; Howell of Palm Bay, Fla. and Donald L. &uot;Don&uot; Howell of Madison Heights; a sister, Frances Daughtrey of Suffolk; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great- great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Port Norfolk Baptist Church by the Rev. Terry Taylor. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the home of Bob Howell, 1209 Mill Lane Quarter, Suffolk, at other times. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Port Norfolk Baptist Church, 401 Broad St., Portsmouth, VA 23707 or the Alzheimer’s Association, No. 20 Interstate Corporate Center, Suite 233, Norfolk, VA 23502. Sturtevant Funeral Home is in charge.

Vassie White

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Vassie &uot;Da-Da&uot; White, 76, a native of Colerain, died April 19, 2005, in Autumn Care of Portsmouth.

White retired after 17 years as a laborer with Atlantic Wood Industries Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Gerald White; a stepdaughter, Antionette Mayo-Cherry; stepson, Angelo Mayo; eight grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was conducted Monday in Lincoln Cemetery, Portsmouth. Fisher Funeral Services Inc., was in charge.

Lungues Lewis

SUFFOLK, Va. – Lungues &uot;Buddy&uot; Lewis, 66, a native of Hertford County, died April 21, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander by the Rev. Ronald Dolberry. Burial will be in Carver Park Cemetery, Murfreesboro.

Lewis was a farmer.

Survivors include his children, Herman, Mary Anne, Walter and Tom; brothers, Johnnie Lewis of Ahoskie and Cleveland Lewis of Murfreesboro; sisters, Virgie Lewis of Philadelphia, Pa., Essie Sturdvant of Powhatan, Alice Murphy of Como, Josephine Pope of Greensboro and Evora Murphy of Como; and several grandchildren.

Rhonda L. Johnson

WINDSOR – Rhonda Lynn Johnson, 23, died April 21, 2005.

A funeral was conducted Sunday in First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Walker Funeral Home, Williamston, was in charge.
