WINDSOR – Serve and volley.

The Windsor Board of Commissioners decided Thursday to work with the Bertie County Recreation Department to provide tennis lessons to the county’s citizens.

Bertie Recreation Director Donna Mizelle appeared before the Board requesting to use the town’s tennis courts to provide tennis lessons for children and adults in the county during July.

Mizelle said the tentative schedule calls for tennis lessons to be conducted for children ages five to 14 on July 11-15. The time is set for 9 a.m. until 12 noon.

Kate Gillam will also be conducting lessons through the county recreation department from 9-11 a.m. or 10 a.m. until 12 noon during the first three weeks in August.

Mizelle said, &uot;We will have lessons for those 15 and up from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday for the first three weeks in June.&uot;

This is the second year the Bertie County Recreation Department has conducted tennis lessons as part of their summer activities. Mizelle said the participation from the county’s children was very good last year.

Mayor Bob Spivey asked if two of the three courts would be enough for what was needed and Mizelle said it would be. He said the town board would like to have one court remain available to the general public.

Commissioner Charles W.D. Fulk made the motion to allow the county recreation department to use the courts with Commissioner Jimmy Hoggard offering a second. The motion unanimously passed.

Signup for the county’s tennis lessons is projected to begin in May. More information will be available through the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald closer to the dates of the signup.
