Grand slam lifts LA

MERRY HILL – Jessica Johnston’s arm and Ruth Stotesbury’s bat are a good combination.

Johnston pitched a one-hitter and Stotesbury hit a grand slam to lift Lawrence Academy to an 11-0 victory over Tarheel Independent Conference rival Northeast here Monday afternoon.

The Lady Warriors, who are ranked number one in the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association’s 1-A ranks, scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.

Senior Taylor Mizelle drew a walk, went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on an error. She scored on a wild pitch.

Ashley Swain then walked and went to second on a wild pitch.

She scored on a Catherine Outten RBI-single to center.

Johnston and junior Jodi White walked to load the bases for Stotesbury, who delivered a grandslam homer to centerfield to give Lawrence a 6-0 lead.

The Warriors added five in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Johnston, White and Stotesbury walked to load the bases before Lauren Rea scored Johnston on an RBI-fielder’s choice. Swain was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Stotesbury scored on a bases loaded walk before Gabby Layton laced a three-run triple to end the game.

Northeast’s major threat came in the top of the fourth frame when Jessica Duncan and Lyndal Brown reached on errors and advanced to third on a Hillary Flythe groundout. A flyout ended the threat.

Johnston threw six innings, allowing no runs and one hit. She had two strikeouts.

Duncan pitched five innings for the Lady Eagles while Allyson Cashwell pitched two-thirds of an inning.

Brown had the only hit for the Lady Eagles. Lawrence had eight hits, led by Outten’s two-hit day.

The Lady Warriors improve to 11-1 overall and 9-0 in the TIC.
