Gladys C. Copeland

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Gladys Casper Copeland, 74, a native of Gates County, died April 4, 2005.

Survivors include her husband, Valand J. Copeland Jr.; a son, Bruce A. Copeland of Kill Devil Hills; a daughter, Wanda C. Vineyard of Chesapeake; a brother, Luther Casper of Corapeake; three sisters, Venelle Morgan of Hertford, Doris Blanchard of Hobbsville and Louise Winslow of Suffolk; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Copeland Family Cemetery, Tyner, with the Rev. Pete Taylor. Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, is in charge. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.twifordfh.com.

Stan W. Easty Jr.

ELIZABETH CITY – Father Stan W. Easty Jr., 83, a native of Lakewood, Ohio, died March 18, 2005, at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City.

Father Easty attended Episcopal Theological Seminary in Lexington, Ky., and was ordained an Episcopal priest in December 1961. His churches included Christ Church in Danville, Va., as an associate; St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Great Bridge, Va.; Church of the Epiphany in Norfolk and St. Andrews – By The Sea in Nags Head, N.C., where he retired in 1982. Father and Mrs. Easty moved on board Nicodemus, a wooden 38 foot Trojan cabin cruiser and began Waterway Ministries. After eight years aboard they moved to dry land in Elizabeth City and continued his ministry serving at Christ Church and then St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Sunbury, until his passing.

Father Easty is survived by his wife, Reba, formerly of Staunton, Va.; one son, Kent Easty of Beaufort, S.C.; one daughter, Sharon Daniels of Chesapeake; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Sunbury. Mary S. Goodman

CASTALIA -Mary Sue Goodman, 78, of Gates County, died March 30, 2005.

Survivors include a son, Malcolm Goodman of Castalia; sisters, Laura Branch of Castalia, Lucinda Clay of Hempstead, N.Y., Martha Ralph of Suffolk and Mollie Goodman of Connecticut; and brothers, Chester Goodman of Corapeake and Wells Goodman of Connecticut.

A funeral was conducted Tuesday at New Middle Swamp Baptist Church, Corapeake. Burial was in the church cemetery. William Toney’s Funeral Home, Spring Hope, was in charge.

Barbara H. Tevis

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Barbara Lee Hunt Tevis, 73, a native of Portsmouth, died April 2, 2005. She was the widow of William T. Tevis.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra L. Stephens of South Point, Ohio; two sons, Robert Tevis of Gates, and Leslie Tevis of Portsmouth; a sister, Ann Lindner; a brother, Ralph S. Hunt Jr.; six grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren.

A graveside service was conducted Tuesday at Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. Tom Potter. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, was in charge.

John Lassiter

AHOSKIE n John Jacob Lassiter, 84, a native of Hertford County, died April 4, 2005 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Lassiter family cemetery by the Rev. Lebron Britt. Burial will be in the Lassiter family cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Lassiter was retired from Bennett Box Co.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Lamont D. Hassell

AHOSKIE n Lamont Devon Hassell, infant son of Tammy Pugh and Harvey Lee Hassell, died March 31, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral was conducted Tuesday in Hillcrest Cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include three sisters, Ayana and Angela Hassell, both of Roxobel and Kayla Hassell of Ahoskie; a brother, Devontae Hassell of Gates Co.; grandfather, James Pugh of Ahoskie, grandmothers, Bernice J. Pugh and Lauria Perry, all of Ahoskie; and great-grandmothers, Carrie Ward of Woodland, Evelyn Jones of Winton and Eunice Pugh of Ahoskie.

Matthew E. Twine

GREENVILLE n Matthew Elisha Twine, infant son of Taneka Twine-Smith, died April 3, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Severn Cemetery by the Rev. Elisha Barnes. Burial will be in Severn Cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include a brother, Devonte Smith; and grandparents, Joe and Georgia Twine, all of Murfreesboro.

David Tyler

COLERAIN n David Tyler, 63, a native of Bertie County, died April 5, 2005 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday at Evening Light Church of God in Christ Jesus, Windsor, by Overseer Luther Cherry. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Tyler retired from Newport News Shipyard, Newport News, Va. He was a member of Evening Light Church of God in Christ Jesus, Windsor.

Survivors include his wife, Rether Drake Tyler of the home; sons, David Cordell Tyler and Keith Romell Tyler, both of Knightdale; daughters, Stephanie Tyler Jenkins of Zebulon, Maxine Raynor of Middletown, Conn., and Maxine Stephenson of Portsmouth; sisters, Emma Cherry of Windsor, Mary Tyler of Colerain and Sarah Jane Williams of Rich Square; a brother, Willie Tyler of Portsmouth; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Annie C. Rascoe

MERRY HILL n Annie Cooper Rascoe, 81, died April 4, 2005 at Brian Center, Windsor.

A wake will be conducted from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain. Burial will be in Ashland Baptist Church Cemetery, Merry Hill.

Daisey B. Outlaw

BROOKLYN, N.Y. n Daisey B. Outlaw, 75, died April 2, 2005 in Brooklyn.

A wake will be conducted from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oxley Hill Baptist Church, Merry Hill. Burial will be in the Holley family cemetery.

Alice L. Davenport

MERRY HILL -Alice Lane Davenport, 90, a native of Chowan County, died April 4, 2005, in Three Rivers Nursing Facility, Windsor. She was the widow of Guilford Leon Davenport.

Mrs. Davenport was a homemaker and attended Capehart’s Baptist Church.

Survivors include eight daughters, Ruth Basham, Alice Hoggard and Clara Phelps, all of Windsor, Lona Stallings of Belvidere, Sarah Copeland and Laura Hall, both of Merry Hill, Linda Spivey of Hobbsville and Ivy Jacobs of Jacksonville; four sons, Jerry Davenport of Glendale Springs, Thomas Davenport and Ray Davenport, both of Merry Hill and Allen Davenport of Cecelia, Ky.; three sisters, Jessie Adams of Merry Hill and Edith Mansfield and Jackie Mansfield, both of Hertford; two brothers, Thomas Lane of Edenton and Larry Lane of Hertford; 26 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Capehart’s Baptist Church by the Rev. Bruce Dayton. Burial was in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, was in charge. Willie Mae Hollowell

SUNBURY – Willie Mae Spivey Hollowell, 83, a native of Gates County, died April 5, 2005, in Chowan Hospital, Edenton. She was the widow of Robert P. Hollowell Sr.

Mrs. Hollowell was the former co-owner and operator of Robert P. Hollowell and Son, a grain and fertilizer dealership in Sunbury and was a member of Damascus Christian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy H. Holland and Robin R. Hollowell, both of Sunbury; one son, Robert P. Hollowell Jr. of Sunbury; seven grandchildren; and 13 grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Damascus Christian Church by the Rev. Forrest Guthrie. Private entombment will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

Gerald W. Spruill

ELIZABETH CITY – Gerald Wayne Spruill 38, a native of Southampton County, Va., died April 3, 2005 in his home.

Spruill was a graduate of Ridgecroft High School, Chowan Collge, U.N.C. Wilmington, and The Law School at N. C. Central University, Durham, N.C. He was a practicing Attorney with The N. C. Department of Public Defenders, in Elizabeth City, and a member of the N.C. Bar Association, and a member of the Como Ruritan Club.

Survivors include his mother, Ann Mizelle Spruill of Como; his father, Gerald Whitley Spruill of Como; and his brother, James Spruill, also of Como.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Buckhorn Baptist Church, Como by the Rev. Dr. J. Brabban. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabeties Association, Station Square Suite 50, Rocky Mount, N.C. 27801. Garrett Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, is in charge.

Frances Tinkham

AULANDER – Frances Kay Williams Tinkham, 49, of Broad Street, died Monday, April 4, 2005.

Mrs. Tinkham was a native of Murfreesboro and was a member of Ahoskie Freewill Baptist Church. She was vice-president and secretary of Tri-Co Metal Works and taught music at several local schools and private piano lessons. She will be remembered for her love of God, her family, and a deep appreciation for music.

Kay is survived by her husband of 31 years, Willard Bradley Tinkham; her mother, Dorothy James Williams of Murfreesboro; two sons,Jamie Bradley Tinkham and wife Jennifer of Aulander, Jason Will Tinkham and wife Dana of Aulander; a daughter, Kristy Kay Tinkham of Edenton; a sister, Beth Osburn of Oklahoma City, OK; and two brothers, Jimmy Williams of Murfreesboro and William Williams, Jr. of Wilmington.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, April 7, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie. Burial will follow in Aulander Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Memorial donations may be made to Chowan College Music Department, 200 Jones Dr. Murfreesboro, N. Murray G. Perry

Colerain – Murray Glenn Perry 86, died April 5, 2005, at Roanoke-ChowanHospital.

Perry attended Colerain Union School and served in the US Army Air Force during World War II.  He was honorably discharged with the rank of Technical Sergeant in 1945.  A gifted automobile mechanic, he owned and operated Perry’s Repair Shop in Trap for 45 years. 

Survivors include his brother, Eugene Perry of Edenton; daughter, Sharon Perry of Raleigh; son, Scott Perry, also of Raleigh; and two grandchildren. 

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Gary Cline. The family will meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. prior to services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Colerain Rescue Squad or the Colerain Baptist Church. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

E. Ricks

PENDLETON n Mrs. Lee Earle Fuller Ricks, age 89, of Pendleton, NC, died April 6, 2005 at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Rich Square.

Mrs. Ricks was born September 18, 1915 in Southampton Co., Va., the daughter of the late Paul W. Fuller and Rose Johnson Fuller. She was also predeceased by her husband, Roddie Ricks and a sister, Ethleen Floyd. She was a member of Severn Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Shirley White and her husband, Leslie of Pendleton, NC; her sons, Phillip Ricks and his wife, Jean of Rich Square, NC, Wilson Ricks and his wife, Sylvia of Conway, NC and Mac Ricks and his wife, Joyce of Pendleton, NC; her sisters, Frances Daniels and Alise Wrenn, both of Emporia, Va. and Corine Wheeler of Roanoke Rapids; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held, Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Severn Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Hogan officiating. Burial will follow at Severn Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Friday from 7 until 9 p.m.

Blanche Morris

AHOSKIE n Blanche Farmer Morris, 83, died April 6, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. She was the widow of Herman Morris.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Connaritsa Baptist Church by the Rev. Freddie Harris. Burial will be in Aulander Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Those desiring may make contributions to Connaritsa Baptist Church. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Morris was a member of Connaritsa Baptist Church. She was also a member of the W.M.U.

Survivors include three daughters, Sue Farmer Weeks of Mt. Olive, Brenda Farmer White of Askewville and Judy Farmer Baker of Ahoskie; one sister, Rachel Tillery of Ahoskie; one brother, Leroy Farmer of Aulander; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Rayfield Chamblee

AHOSKIE n Rayfield Chamblee, 95, a native of Hertford County, died April 6, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

Catherine Eason

JACKSON n Catherine Eason, 83, a native of Hertford County, died April 3, 2005 at Hampton Woods Nursing Home.

Survivors include one daughter, Jerlean Brown of Frederick, Md.; a brother, Otis Powell of Ahoskie; three sisters, Effie Beale and Blannie Majette, both of Potecasi and Virginia Bush of St. John; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
