WOODLAND – An eighth-grader at Conway Middle School tragically lost her life Sunday night during a two-vehicle accident.

Danielle Nelson, 13, of Woodland died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, which occurred on US 258 near the Pinetops community (between Murfreesboro and Woodland).

Her brother, 17-year-old Shane Nelson who was the vehicle’s operator, was seriously injured. He was airlifted by EastCare to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Monday, the Northampton County Public Schools District sent crisis and counseling teams to both Conway Middle School and Northampton-East High School, where Shane Nelson was enrolled as a junior.

&uot;We felt we should immediately address the emotional needs of Danielle’s and Shane’s classmates,&uot; said Susie Johnson, a spokesperson for Northampton County Schools. &uot;Our thoughts and our prayers are with the family as well as the friends and the classmates of Danielle and Shane.&uot;

No final accident report was available from the Roanoke Rapids office of the North Carolina Highway Patrol as they continue to investigate the mishap.

Northampton County EMS Director Ronald Storey said that, to his understanding, Danielle Nelson was pinned inside the vehicle.

&uot;I was told that it took quite some time to get her out,&uot; Storey said. &uot;A second EastCare unit was dispatched to the scene in order to fly her to Greenville. But, from what I was told, EMT’s on the scene were not able to stabilize her enough to a point where she could be airlifted. The EastCare medics accompanied her on the ambulance to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, but her injuries were so severe that she just didn’t make it.&uot;

While emergency responders worked the scene of the accident, US 258 was closed in both directions and traffic rerouted for an undisclosed period of time on Sunday night. The roadway was also used as a landing zone by both EastCare helicopters.

Northampton EMS, Woodland Fire and Rescue, Conway/Severn Rescue, Murfreesboro Fire Department and the Jackson Fire Department were dispatched to the scene.
