ROANOKE RAPIDS n Mae Peters, 74, died March 13, 2005 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home by Pastor Patrick Avent. Interment will be in Oakride Cemetery, Weldon.

Harry Melton

WHITAKERS n Harry James Melton, 59, March 14, 2005.

Memorial services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Enfield Baptist Church, Enfield, by the Rev. Mark Sanders. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Enfield Baptist Church, 200 West Burnette Avenue, Enfield, NC 27823. Sykes Funeral Service, Rich Square, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Judy T. Melton of the home; two sons, Jeffrey S. Melton of Kannapolis and Matthew T. Melton of Greenville; one sister, Margaret M. Taylor of Beaufort; two brothers, J.D. Melton of Creswell and Howard G. Melton of Rocky Mount; and two grandchildren.

Lillie M. Pope

COFIELD n Lillie Mae Pope, died March 15, 2005 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Philippi Baptist Church by the Rev. Elton Hall. Burial will be in the Pope family cemetery, Cofield. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include five sons, Neiamiah Pope Jr. of Columbia, Richard Pope and John Pope, both of Cofield, Joe Lee Pope of Hampton, Va., and Timothy Pope of Ahoskie; seven daughters, Doris and Diane Simmons, Freda Carter and Linda Pope, all of Cofield, Deborah Simmons of Ahoskie, Sandra Bright and Carolyn Jackson, both of Inkster, Michigan; one sister, Mamie Brooks of Murfreesboro; 30 grandchildren; and 51 great-grandchildren.

Ella P. Jernigan

WINDSOR n Ella Pritchard Jernigan, 89, a native of Bertie County, died March 14, 2005. She was the widow of Jay Lester Jernigan.

A graveside funeral was conducted Wednesday at Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. Michael Bailey and the Rev. Ken Bunch. Memorial gifts may be given to the Thomas C. Lewis Memorial Scholarship Fund, 1020 US 17 N, Windsor, NC 27983 or Greens Cross Baptist Church, 439 US 17 North Windsor, NC. 27983. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge.

Mrs. Jernigan was a homemaker and a member of Greens Cross Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Al Jernigan of Windsor; two sisters, Vera P. Bazemore of Virginia Beach, Va., and Sue P. Bread of Richmond; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Felix Phillips Jr.

RICH SQUARE n Felix Phillips Jr., 79, a native of Northampton County, died March 10, 2005 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Philippi Baptist Church by the Rev. Rex Edwards. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Phillips was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Nathaniel Phillips and Larry Blount, both of Rich Square; six daughters, Brenda Hines of Knightdale, Sharon Edwards and Annie Phillips, both of Rich Square, Geneva George of Clinton, N.J., Joyce McGill of Vista, Calif., and Louise Phillips of East Orange; one brother, Mason Phillips of Paterson; 22 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Eula M. Jernigan

COFIELD n Eula Mae Jernigan, 88, a native of Hertford County, died March 13, 2005, at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Philippi Baptist Church by the Rev. Charlie Carter. Burial will be in the Harrell family cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of Philippi Baptist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Robert Jernigan of Norfolk, Va., George Jernigan of Hampton, Va., James Jernigan of Cofield and John Jernigan of Winton; 19 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Chester D. Freeman

COLERAIN -Chester David Freeman, 74, a native of Bertie County, died March 14, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilder's Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander. Burial will be in the Cherry family cemetery, Aulander.

Freeman was a retired machine operator for Coulbourn Lumber Co., Inc. He was a member of Piney Woods Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Bobby Freeman and James Freeman, both of Colerain; and a sister, Mattie Watford of Colerain.

Jesse T. Melton

MURFREEBORO n Jesse Thomas Melton, 52, a native of Northampton County, died March 12, 2005 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Nebo Baptist Church by Pastor Robert L. Holloman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Barnes Melton of Murfreesboro; children, Trevoir D. Melton of Murfreesboro, Tomeka Melton-Beale of Como and Kero Melton Fauntleroy of Murfreesboro; three sisters, Mary Basnight of Lewiston, Doris Brown of Virginia Beach, Va., and Ellen Melton of Patterson, N.J.; three brothers, Raymond Melton of Rich Square, Randy Melton of Severn and William Williams of Govenor, NY; and six grandchildren.

Leslie B. Harden Sr.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Leslie B. Harden Sr., 87, died March 12, 2005.

A graveside service was conducted Tuesday in Hill Crest Cemetery, Colerain. Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Francis Gay Chapel, South Norfolk, was in charge.

Edwin Cherry Jr.

MOREHEAD CITY n Edwin Arlington Buck Cherry Jr., a native of Tarboro, died March 14, 2005 at Carteret General Hospital.

Cherry retired from Phillips Petroleum Company as an Auditor-Analyst. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Cherry Fisher of New Bern, Melissa Cherry Cohen of Pinehurst and Cecilia Cherry Flinchum of Greensboro; sister, Jean Cherry Gilliam of Windsor, and nine grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Carlisle Funeral Home, Tarboro with Rev. Peggy Leggett. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Dorothy S. Harrell

MURFREESBORO n Mrs. Dorothy Sykes Harrell, age 79, died at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie on Wednesday, March 16, 2005. Mrs. Harrell was a member of the Meherrin Baptist Church in Murfreesboro. She was a member and past Matron of the Pendleton Chapter 13 Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Harrell loved flowers and gardening. She had a tremendous love and passion for her family and friends and will be missed greatly. Preceding her in death are her mother, LS Sykes, her father, Roy M. Sykes, her husband, Rex Harrell and sisters, Jean Sykes and Carrie Parker.

Survivors include her two sons, Robert M. Harrell and wife, June of Winton, NC and Ronnie L. Harrell and wife, Elaine of Greenville, NC; one sister, Bonnie S. Sumner of Conway, NC; and one brother, Bill Sykes and wife, Carolyn of Selma, NC.

Also surviving are her grandchildren, Bryan Harrell and wife, Elizabeth of Murfreesboro, NC, John Paul Harrell and Patricia Lee Harrell, both of Greenville, NC, and her great-grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Harrell and Cade Robert Harrell, both of Murfreesboro, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, March 18, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Meherrin Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, NC, with the Rev. Billy sellers and the Rev. Wint Hall officiating. The burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro, NC.

The family will receive friends at the Meherrin Baptist Church on Thursday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home of Robert and June Harrell.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Meherrin Baptist Church, 519 Meherrin Lane, Murfreesboro, NC 27855.

Thelma W. Lance

Thelma Wilson Lance, 86 years old, formerly of Chesapeake, VA, went home to be with the Lord on March 14, 2005. She resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Allen Holloman of Ahoskie, NC.

Mrs. Lance is survived by her husband, Thomas A. (Buddy) Lance of Chesapeake, VA. She is also survived by six children, Vernon Lee Wilson and wife, Sue of Chesapeake, VA, Larry Wayne Wilson and wife, Carolyn of Edenton, NC, Barbara Wilson Roberson and husband, Alvin, Hallett, Allan Wilson and wife, Alice, Gail Wilson Holloman and husband, Allen, all of Ahoskie, NC, Rita Jones and husband, Tommy of Portsmouth, VA.

Mrs. Lance has 15 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Hallett Vernon Wilson and by her grandson, Derek Thomas Jones.

Mrs. Lance was a member of Great Bridge Baptist Church, Chesapeake, Va.

She had worked at General Electric and was a retired Avon Representative.

A celebration of her life will be held Thursday, March 17 at 1 p.m. at the Graham Funeral Home Chapel at 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, VA. Visitation was at the chapel on Wednesday at 6:30-8 p.m.

Lisa Kidd

WINTERVILLE, NC – Lisa Nicole Kidd, 33, died Sunday, March 13, 2005 at Duke University Hospital, following an extended illness.

The funeral service was conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel, 2100 E. 5th Street, Greenville.  A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. in the Kidd Family Cemetery, Hwy. 158 North of Jackson, NC.

Lisa, born September 19, 1971 in New Bern, NC, grew up in Idabel, Oklahoma, Raleigh and Greenville, NC.  She graduated from East Carolina University with a BA in Education.  Lisa enjoyed a career in law enforcement, working for the Pitt County Sheriff's Department, the NC State Bureau of Investigation and the Mississippi State Bureau of Investigation.  She had a love of history, reading and cooking.

Lisa is survived by her mother and stepfather, Brenda & Joe Tryzenski of Raleigh; her father and stepmother, Billy & Carol Kidd; and brother, Chris Kidd, all of Greenville;

her grandparents, Mary and Robert Fleetwood of Starkville, MS; as well as many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Billy & Carol Kidd.  They also received friends Wednesday afternoon at the home of Sidney Allen, Hwy. 158, Conway, NC.

Johnnie G. Harrell, Jr.

AHOSKIE – Johnnie Gurley Harrell, Jr., 79, of NC Highway 461, died Monday, March 14, 2005, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Mr. Harrell was born in Bertie County, a son of the late J. G. and Mary Overton Harrell. He was a member of Union Baptist Church where he served as deacon and former Sunday school teacher. He was a former member and secretary of the Union Fire Department and a Wildlife Club. Johnnie had retired as head asphalt inspector with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Liverman Harrell; a daughter, Nancy Harrell Gunnells of Conway; a son, John Robert Harrell of Cary; a sister, Ann Hollowell of Murfreesboro; a brother, Ray Harrell of Murfreesboro; two granddaughters, Kelly Peele Vann of Conway and Megan Gunnells of Ahoskie. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kayla Gunnells.

A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Randy Miller, officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, and other times at the home.
