ROBERSONVILLE – A year ago Hertford County beat Northside 8-3 to win the 2004 Roanoke Easter tournament.

This year, the Bears and Panthers met in the first round as Northside beat Hertford County 6-1 at Roanoke High School Saturday afternoon.

Northside plated three runs in the bottom of the third inning to grab the lead and never looked back.

Hertford County scored their lone run in the top of the fifth.

Josh Lane doubled to right-centerfield and went to third on a Steven Davis groundout. He then scored on a Heath Britt sacrifice fly that cut the Northside lead to 3-1.

The Panthers responded with one run in the bottom of the fifth and two in the bottom of the sixth to grab the win.

Andy Thompson pitched the complete game for the Bears. He gave up six runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits and had four strikeouts.

Daniel Craft went the distance for Northside, allowing one run on four hits.

The Bears dropped to 2-3 overall and are scheduled to play today at the same tournament.
