Mary Fennell

AHOSKIE n Mary Fennell, 71, a native of Hertford County, died March 8, 2005 at her home.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Menola Baptist Church, Woodland, by the Rev. Johnnie Speller. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Fennell was a retired cafeteria worker from Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was a member of Menola Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Willie Fennell of Ahoskie; sons, Leroy Fennell of Ahoskie and Larry Eley of Illinois; daughters, Alma Marie Fennell of Murfreesboro, Cynthia D. Fennell of Ahoskie and Hilda Harrison of Winston-Salem; her mother, Bloomer Liverman of Ahoskie; one sister, Mable Askew of Murfreesboro; and a brother, James Liverman of Ahoskie.

Diane Peele

KELFORD n Diane Peele, 92, died March 7, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Thursday with the funeral beginning at 12 noon at Luella Baptist Church, Kelford, by the Rev. Dr. Claude Odom. Interment will be in the Lewter family Cemetery, Kelford. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, is in charge.

Edna Washington

ROCKY MOUNT n Edna "MeMa" Washington, 94, died March 8, 2005 at Nash Grove Manor, Nashville.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Zion A.M.E. Church, Daytona Beach, Fla. A visitation will be conducted from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Research Center in her memory. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount and Herbert Thompson Funeral Home, Daytona Beach, is in charge.

She is survived by a daughter, Leorita B. Hankerson.

Gwendolyn Pittman

ROCKY MOUNT n Gwendolyn Pittman, 46, died March 7, 2005 at Nash Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Rocky Mount.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Truth Tabernacle, Rocky Mount, by the Bishop Haywood Parker. A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Joseph Battle

ROCKY MOUNT n Joseph Battle, 42, died March 6, 2005 at Guardian Care, Rocky Mount.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Delight Baptist Church, Castalia, by the Rev. William E. Holloway. A visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount.

Henry Newton

ROCKY MOUNT n Henry Newton, 85, died March 4, 2005, at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Mount Herman Baptist Church by the Rev. Dennis Gunter. A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount.

Mary C. Cofield

MERRY HILL n Mary C. Cofield, 88, a native of Pitt County, died March 5, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie Best. Burial will be in Ashland Baptist Church Cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Cofield was an assistant nurse for Bertie Winston Park Rest Home. She was a member of Ashland Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Lenard J. Cofield of Merry Hill; two sons, Earnhart L. Winborne and Athaniel Winborne, both of Windsor; two daughters, Verlie Lanier of Williamston and Andrea Tomlin of Philadelphia, Pa.; one brother, Willie C. Downey of Portsmouth, Va.; 26 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Gilbert S. Parker

ZUNI, VA n Gilbert Stephenson (Steve) Parker, 48, was laid to rest Saturday, February 26, 2005.

He is survived by his wife, Laura L. Parker, daughter, Sarah P. Stephenson and husband Jason, and son Jacob S. Parker, all of the home. He was the son of Stanley J. Parker, Sr. and Cloyce W. Parker of Murfreesboro.

Surviving siblings include Stanley J. Parker, Jr. and wife Mary of Murfreesboro, Esther P. Cowan and husband, Freddie of Como, Martin Keith Parker of Hopewell, VA, Nancy P. Hargrave and husband Junior of Pendleton, Teresa A. Parker of North Tonawanda, NY and Pamela P. Blanton of Ahoskie.

He is also survived by 10 nieces, three nephews and three great nieces. Predeceased by his grandparents, Adlai and Minnie M. Parker of Conway and Gilbert and Ola F. Warren of Murfreesboro, N.C.

William T.Vaughan

MURFREESBORO n William Thomas "Jack" Vaughan, 68, a native of Hertford County, died March 6, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Essie Mae Vaughan of Murfreesboro; children, Harvey L. Vaughan and Annie M. Vaughan, both of Murfreesboro, Gloria V. Watson of Greenville and Thomisene Artis of Knightdale; sisters, Diane Bowser and Jennie Mae Parker, both of Murfreesboro, Catherine Lassiter of Portsmouth, Va., and Alma Dukes of Ahoskie; and one grandson.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Nebo Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert L. Holloman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Jesse T. Peebles

CONWAY n Jesse Thomas Peebles, 91, a native of Northampton County, died March 6, 2005 at his residence.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Peebles of Conway; children, Walter H. Peebles of Conway and Barbara Alexander of Somerspoint, N.J.; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Allen Chapel AME Church by the Rev. Harold Sidbury. Burial will be in the Deloatch family cemetery, Conway. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Larry Stanley

NEW ORLEANS, Lo. n Larry Stanley, 50, a native of Bertie County, died March 5, 2005 at Sentara Complex, Hampton, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Soul Saving Station, Ahoskie, by Bishop Val Melendez. Burial will be in Newsome Grove Church Cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Stanley was a head counselor for Art of Great New Orleans and a member of Evening Star Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Rosa Stanley of Ahoskie; father, William Stanley of Cofield; four brothers, Samuel Tracy Stanley and Keith Stanley of Newport News, Irving Stanley of Colerain and Douglas Stanley of Ahoskie; three sisters, Shirley Mackie, Ecomi Stanley and Roslyn Stanley, all of Hampton.
