Fike spanks HCHS

AHOSKIE – Fike High School built a 9-0 lead and went on to deal Hertford County their first baseball loss of the season by a final of 14-2 here Monday afternoon.

Fike scored four runs in the top of the second to grab the early lead.

In the bottom of the same frame, Ryan Simmons singled to center with two outs. He went to third on a wild pickoff throw, but a strikeout ended the inning with Fike holding a 4-0 advantage.

The Demons added five runs in the top of the third inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Andy Thompson singled with two outs and then stole second, but the threat ended on a groundout.

Hertford County got their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Britt singled to right before William Barmer hit a two-run homer to left. Simmons and Josh Lane then had back-to-back singles, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning with Fike holding a 9-2 lead.

Fike added a run in the top of the fifth and another in the top of the sixth to take an 11-2 lead.

The Bears had their final hit in the bottom of the sixth on a Barmer leadoff double, but couldn’t bring him around to score.

The Demons scored their final three runs in the top of the seventh for the 14-2 final.

H. Britt went two and one-third innings on the mound for the loss while Thompson hurled three and two-thirds innings. Ryan Matthews pitched one inning.

The Bears totaled seven hits, with Barmer and Simmons have a pair of hits each to lead the club.

HCHS is now 2-1 overall heading into Friday’s 7 p.m. contest with Gates County in Ahoskie.
