Cecil Maddrey Jr.

SEVERN n Mr. Cecil Jarvis Maddrey, Jr., age 83 of Severn, NC, died Feb. 20, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Mr. Maddrey was the husband of the late Irene V. Maddrey and his son, C.J. Maddrey III. He was a farmer and past member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Land Bank. He was a member of Severn United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Pearl Lane Younce and her husband, Don of Morganton, NC; four grandchildren, Shawn Maddrey and his wife, Renee, Jessica Maddrey, and her fianc\u00E9, Adam Newsom, Lacey Maddrey and Samantha Younce; great-grandchildren, Gavin and Carlee Blair Maddrey; his sisters, Mozelle Comer of Virginia Beach, Va., Helen Casebolt of Beledere, S.C., Julia Hassell of Edenton, NC and Maxine Earley and her husband, Jim of Chesapeake, Va.; his sister-in-law, Ruth Maddrey of Morresville, NC; also many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Seven United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sid Collins officiating. Burial will follow at Severn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Lori B. Flythe

SEABOARD n Mrs. Lori Barrow Flythe, age 36, of Seaboard, NC, died Feb. 19, 2005, at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.

Mrs. Flythe was born Oct. 2, 1968, the daughter of Shirley Davis Flythe and the late Thomas E. Flythe. She was also preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, Tom and Emma Jean Edwards Flythe. She was a graduate of Northampton County High School-East and East Carolina University. She was a licensed practical physical therapist and worked for Carolina Physical Therapy at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, N.C.

Survivors include her husband, James Flythe; her children, Ryland and Morgan Flythe, both of the home; her mother, Shirley Davis Barrow of Jackson, NC; her sisters, Beverly A. Acree and her husband, John of Jackson, NC, Evelyn B. Davenport and her husband, David of Southern Shores, NC and Lynn B. Deloatch and her husband Kenny of Roanoke Rapids; her brother-in-laws, Tommy Flythe and Paul Flythe; her nieces and nephews, Christina, Thomas, Stephanie, Jamie, April, Hillary Jo and Russ.

Graveside services will be held, Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Seaboard Cemetery in Seaboard, NC with the Rev. Billy Howell and Rev. Bert Kirk officiating.

The family received friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids Monday from 7 until 9 p.m. and other times at the home of Tommy and Nancy Flythe, Seaboard, NC.

Bernice S. Pierce

AHOSKIE n Bernice Slaughter Pierce, 90, of 516 Hayes St., died February 19, 2005 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Mrs. Pierce was a native of Hertford County, the daughter of the late Russell P. and Bessie Sumner Slaughter, a member of First Presbyterian Church, a member of the Ahoskie Chapter #291 of the Eastern Star, a member of the Ahoskie Woman's Club, a Girl Scout Leader, and a Den Mother.

Mrs. Pierce worked for the Ahoskie Department Store in the thirty's and in 1940, with her late husband, founded Pierce Printing Company, Inc., of Ahoskie, at which time she became Co-Owner and Vice-President of the Firm.

Mrs. Pierce was predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years, Charles Iredell Pierce, Sr., who died in 2003.

Surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth Pierce Moore and husband, Robert W. Moore of Canton, Ga.; one son, Charles I. Pierce, Jr. and wife, Judy H. Pierce of Ahoskie, NC; one sister, Thelma "Bug" Dempsey of Henderson, NC; four grandchildren, Carolyn A. Pierce and Catherine N. Pierce, both of Ahoskie, NC, Matthew R. Moore of Athens, Ga., and Spencer P. Moore of Canton, Ga.

A memorial service was held Monday, February 21, 2005 at 2 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Richard Rice and the Rev. Dr. Jesse J. Croom officiating. Burial will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Ahoskie, the Ahoskie Chapter #291 of the Eastern Star, or to the Ahoskie Woman's Club.

Derence T. Walton

KELFORD n Derence Trakel "Scooter" Walton, 18, a native of Bertie County, died February 18, 2005 at his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Beautiful Zion Baptist Church, Lewiston, by the Rev. Eugene Harris. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Walton was employed with Perdue Inc. He was a member of Beautiful Zion Baptist Church.

Survivors include his parents, Fred Walton of Winton and Mary Powell of Kelford; his grandfather, Edward Powell of Aulander; and his brothers, Derrick Dukes, Demetrius Dukes and Kyun Taylor.

Rufus T. Long

MURFREESBORO n Rufus Thomas Long, died February 18, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Hood Funeral Home, Conway, is in charge.

Wilbur H. Fleming

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Wilbur H. Fleming, 83, a native of Gates County, died February 18, 2005, in Riverside Regional Medical Center.

Fleming was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church for 32 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mavis Taylor Fleming; a daughter, Delores Ann Johnson of Newport News; a sister, Geneva Felton of Eure; a brother, Vance Fleming of Elizabeth City; two grandsons; and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Peninsula Funeral Home by the Rev. Wes Taylor and the Rev. David Wilson. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Willie L. Towns

SUFFOLK, Va. – Willie Lee Towns, 65, a native of Nansemond County, died February 18, 2005, in his residence.

Towns retired from ILA No. 1248 and was a former member of the Solid Rock Church in Chesapeake.

Survivors include his wife, Daisy Towns of Suffolk; two sons, James F. Towns of Suffolk and Willie Lee Towns Jr. of Richmond; a daughter, Robin Langston of Corapeake; a brother, Arthur Lee Allen of Suffolk; a stepsister, Ann Jordan Lauter; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in Little Bethel Baptist Church by Minister Miles Jordan. Interment will be in Nansemond Suffolk Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk, is in charge.

James S. Eley

MURFREESBORO – James Stancel &uot;Slim&uot; Eley, 66, a native of Hertford County, died February 17, 2005, at RCH Ahoskie.

Eley was a retired self-employed farmer and was a member of Parker Grove Baptist of Mapleton.

Survivors include his wife, Eunice Eley; four daughters, Phyllistine E. Simmons and Tracey Eley, both of Mapleton, Darlene Ward of Ahoskie and Shirley Thorpe of Washington, D.C.; five sons, James M. Eley of Hampton, Matthew Eley and Curtis Eley, both of Mapleton, Jimmie Eley of Conway and James Gore of Roanoke Rapids; two sisters, Sandra Fennell of Ahoskie and Doris L. Britt of Hampton; a brother, David Eley of Murfreesboro; and 18 grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Sunday in Parkers Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Fenando Temple. Burial was in Eley Town Family Cemetery, Murfreesboro. Hertford County Undertakers of Winton, was in charge.

Reginald May

ROCKY MOUNT n Reginald May, 47, died February 20, 2005 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

Jimmy C. Barmer

WOODLAND n Jimmy Carol Barmer, 62, died February 21, 2005 at his home.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodland Cemetery by the Rev. Heath Lloyd. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.

Barmer worked for many years with Parker Manufacturing Co.

Survivors include his wife, Elva Brittenham Barmer; his sons, Jimmy C. Barmer Jr. of Aulander and Christopher Barmer of Woodland; a daughter, Linda Barmer of Woodland; two sisters, Betty Carpenter of Franklin, Va., and Doris Wheeler of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a brother, Burcham Barmer of Woodland; and five grandchildren.

Lillie M. Roundtree

NEW BERN n Lillie Mae Roundtree, 84, died February 17, 2005 at the home of her daughter, Mattie Vaughan at 134 West Cedar Rd., Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Missionary Church in New Bern by the Rev. Jimmy L. Cooper. Walston Clark Funeral Home, New Bern is in charge. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, supplied information.

Survivors include three daughters, Mattie Vaughan of Ahoskie, Ida Lovich-Martih of New Bern and Margaret Sumner of Richmond, Va.; three sons, Otis Guion of Bridgeton, Willie Lovich Jr. of New Bern and Jerry Lovich of Raleigh; 29 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
