Clara Bolton

AHOSKIE n Mrs. Clara Bracy Tyler Bolton, age 89, died at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Rich Square on Saturday, February 5, 2005.

Mrs. Bolton was a member of the Sandy Run Baptist Church in Roxobel, NC. She was born to the late Josie Smith Bracy and William Paul Bracy. She was married to Herbert Tyler and they settled in Rich Square where they raised three children. Following the death of Mr. Tyler she was married to Ashley Bolton. Mrs. Bolton worked for seventeen years for the Mylecraft Company as well as working for Pope's Dime Store. Preceding her in death besides her parents are two sisters, Mary Jane Duke and Louise Powell; four brothers, Claude, Clarence, Dick and Owen Bracy.

Survivors include her three sons, Ted Tyler and his wife, Kathryn of Rich Square, NC, Bobby Tyler and his wife, Nancy of Newport News, VA and Donnie Tyler and his wife, Jane of Nashville, NC; two stepdaughters, Rosie Jernigan and her husband Ronnie, of Colerain, NC, Susie Johnson and her husband Don, of Rich Square, NC; one stepson, Pat Bolton and his wife Jennifer of Wilmington, NC;

and one sister, Sarah Williams of Ahoskie, NC. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square with the Rev. Bob Rogers officiating.

The family received friends at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square on Monday evening from 7-8:30 p.m.

Gladys B. Futrell

CONWAY n Mrs. Gladys Blow Futrell, age 91, of Conway, NC, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Mrs. Futrell was born Nov. 29, 1913 in Capron, Va. She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd Kelly Futrell and was a member of Conway Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Milton Futrell of High Point, NC; her sister, Belle Pearson and her husband, Waverly Pearson of Roanoke Rapids, NC; four grandchildren, Linda Pinion and her husband, Jeff, Ann Braud and her husband, Kent, Pattie Gales and her husband, Brett and Mike Futrell; and five great-grandchildren, Matthew and Caitlin Pinion, Sydney and Aaron Braud and Reagan Gales.

Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005 at 2 p.m.

at Conway Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Conway Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 1 p.m. prior to services.

Inez J. Barber

AHOSKIE – Inez Jernigan Barber, 81, of 202 South St. died at the home of her daughter in Elizabeth City, N.C., February 5, 2005.

Mrs. Jernigan was a native of Bertie County, a homemaker, and a member of Union Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Cofield and husband, Winston of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Jane Perry of Ahoskie, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, John Jerningan and Julian Jernigan.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Polvadore officiating. Burial to follow in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor, N.C.

The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday February 8, 2005 and other time at the home of her daughter Jane Perry

Catherine O. Joyner

HOBBSVILLE n Catherine Overman Joyner, 81, a native of Gates County, died February 5, 2005 in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. She was the widow of Henry L. "Jubilee" Joyner.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Rev. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

Mrs. Joyner was a homemaker and also done seasonal grading at Birdsong Peanut Co. in Suffolk, Va. She was a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church where she was active in its WMU and Adult Ladies Sunday School Class.

Survivors include a son, Henry J. Joyner of Ahoskie; and three grandchildren.

Elizabeth Rawls

AULANDER n Elizabeth "Libby" Rawls, 52, died February 6, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

Mrs. Rawls was a member of Creeksville Baptist Church and worked for the State of North Carolina as a secretary for the state parole division.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Creeksville Baptist Church Cemetery, Creeksville, by the Rev. Bob Deacon and Dr. Brian Detrick. The family will receive friends at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square from 7 to 9 p.m. at Sykes Funeral Service. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Survivors include her husband, Ricky Rawls of Aulander; her mother, Lettie M. Futrell of Rich Square; two sons, Chad Rawls of Jackson and Matt Rawls of Greenville; three brothers, Wayne Futrell of Murfreesboro, Robert Futrell of Sacramento, Calif., and John Futrell of Woodland.

Edward Steward

COMO n Edward Steward, 83, a native of Hertford County, died February 3, 2005 at Down East Health and Rehab. Center, Gates County.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wilder's Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander, by the Rev. Ronald M. Dolberry. Burial will be in the Steward family cemetery, Como.

Steward was a member of Mill Neck Baptist Church and a farmer.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Herbert Lassiter

JAMESVILLE n Herbert Carroll Lassiter, 93, a native of Martin County, died February 5, 2005 at Washington County Hospital. He was the widower of Lizzie Coy Lassiter.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Walker Funeral Home, Williamston, by the Rev. Donald Jones. Burial was in the Modlin family cemetery, Jamesville. Walker Funeral Home, Williamston, was in charge. Memorial donations may be made to the Jamesville Rescue Squad.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty L. Jones of Jamesville; a son, Abron Joseph Lassiter of Kelford; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Queenie E. Bond

WINDSOR n Queenie Elizabeth Bond, died February 1, 2005. She was the widow of Willie Henry Bond Sr.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at St. Frances Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Dennis Cherry. Interment was in the bond family cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge.

Survivors include one daughter, Jackie Garner of Washington; four sons, Willie Henry Bond Jr. of Alexandria, Va., James Bond of Massillon, Ohio, Curtis Bond of Windsor and Randy Bond of Canton; two sisters, Fannie Williams of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Lillie Howard of Portsmouth; a brother, Luther Speller of Windsor; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth J. Watkins

WINDSOR -Elizabeth Ann Jones Watkins, 81, a native of Early Station, died February 2, 2005, at Brian Center. She was the widow Henry Carrington Watkins III.

Mrs. Watkins attended Aulander High School. She graduated from St. Mary’s School, Raleigh, N.C., in 1942, and Salem College in Winston-Salem, N.C., in 1944. Near the end of World War II she served as a decoder for the Military Intelligence Division of the War Department in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Watkins returned to Aulander to teach school for a few years after the war. In 1951, while employed by Thalhimers in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Watkins was a member of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Windsor.

Survivors include two sons, Henry Carrington Watkins IV of Creedmoor, and Thaddeus Jones Watkins of New York City.

A private graveside service was held Sunday at Masonic Cemetery in Culpepper, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church of Windsor or to the charity of one’s choice. A memorial service honoring the lives of Elizabeth Jones and Henry Carrington Watkins III will be held at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church of Windsor at a date and time to be announced.

Alberta T. Pittman

SUFFOLK, Va. – Alberta T. Pittman, 77, a native of Nansemond County, died February 3, 2005, in Sentara Nursing Center. She was the widow of Earl L. Pittman Sr.

Mrs. Pittman was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church where she was an usher, member of the Pastor’s Aide, Emma V. Kelly Hospitality Club, gospel choir and a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of Tent No. 61.

Survivors include three daughters, Otelia Mozell of Gatesville, Willie M. Pittman-Scott of Chesapeake and Roberta Pittman of Suffolk; two sons, Earl Pittman Jr. and Marvin Thomas, both of Portsmouth; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Macedonia Baptist Church, Hobson, Va., by Minister Miles Jordan. Interment will be in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church at 11:30 a.m. Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk, is in charge.

Lottie D. Ray

AHOSKIE n Lottie Daniels Ray, 95, a native of Bertie County, died February 6, 2005 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ahoskie Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Jeffrey Skiles and the Rev. Rodney Holloman. Interment will be in Ahoskie Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Garrett Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ray was a homemaker and a member of Ahoskie Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children, Virginia Ray Sumner of Ahoskie, William E. "Bud" Ray of Aulander, Horace "Teny" Ray, and Charles T. Ray, both of Ahoskie; a half sister, Ella Ruth Perry of Colerain; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

ROCKY MOUNT n Ivey Leon Battle, 75, died February 5, 2005 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

Selma Jameson

JACKSON n Mrs. Selma Dukes Jameson, age 91, of Jackson, NC, died February 5, 2005 at East Cooper Regional Medical Center in Charleston, South Carolina.

Mrs. Jameson was born February 22, 1913 in Branchville, S.C. She was a lifetime member of Jackson Baptist Church and a homemaker. Mrs. Jameson traveled oversees with her husband and helped him with his agriculture work for the state department of which she really enjoyed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Herbert Jameson Sr. and her two sons, Ross D. Jameson and Perry Herbert Jameson Jr.

Survivors include her grandchildren, Laura Jameson Bevins of Newport News, Va., and Perry Herbert Jameson III of Charleston, South Carolina. Four great-grandchildren, Samuel Bevins, Madeline Bevins, Haley Jameson and Luke Jameson.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Jackson Baptist Church in Jackson, NC, with the Rev. Billy Howell and the Rev. Joe McLean officiating. Burial will follow at Jackson Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Tuesday from 7 until 9 p.m.
