Gordon Asbell

WINDSOR n Gordon Bennett Asbell, 69, a native of Bertie County, died February 8, 2005 at Chowan Hospital.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. Michael Bailey. The family invites friends to the church fellowship hall after the service for food and fellowship. Memorial gifts may be given to Greens Cross Baptist Church Building Fund, 439 US 17 North, Windsor, NC 27983. Walker Funeral Home is in charge.

Asbell was retired from Sprint and also served his country in the US Navy. Mr. Asbell was a member of Greens Cross Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Gordon Vincent Asbell of Raleigh; a daughter, Cheryl DeBardelaben of Holly Spring; former wife, Rhoda Asbell of Raleigh; a sister, Cornelia Ann Asbell of Conelly Springs; and two grandchildren.

MURFREESBORO n Joyce Parker Miller, 70, died December 23, 2004.

JACKSON n Hilliard Clanton, 84, died February 7, 2005 at North Carolina Special Care, Wilson.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home by the Rev. John Greene. Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Felicia D. Smith

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Felicia Diane Smith, 40, died February 8, 2005.

Hallie M. Williams

AHOSKIE n Hallie Mead Williams, 76, of 805 East 1st Street, died February 7, 2005, at her residence.

Mrs. Williams was a retired custodian from Ahoskie Graded School. She was a member of New Bethany Baptist Church, Harrellsville, NC. She also enjoyed sewing.

Survivors include her husband, Conner Williams of the home; two sons, Robert Earl Williams (Ruth) of Powellsville, NC and Joe Willie Williams of Hampton, VA; four daughters, May F. Privott (Donald) of Cofield, NC, Marrice Cain (Ryland) of Garysburg, NC, Martha Weaver (Robert) of Ahoskie, NC and Christine White (Carlton) of Powellsville, NC; one brother, Odell Overton (Ethel) of Ahoskie, NC; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one brother-in-law and one sister-in-law.

A funeral was conducted Friday, February 11, 2005 at New Bethany Baptist Church by the Rev. William Clark. Burial was in the church cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, was in charge.

Agnes B. McLemore

HENDERSON – Agnes Vann Brown McLemore, 98, a native of Bertie County, died February 10, 2005 at Britthaven. She was the widow of Amos Leslie McLemore.

Mrs. McLemore was a member of First Baptist Church of Henderson.

Survivors include her children, Amos Leslie McLemore Jr. of Rolesville, Agnes M. Dodd of Henderson, Nancy M. Ayscue of Henderson and Lena Kay Scarborough of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren;14 great-grandchildren; and surviving siblings are Sarah Penney of Greenville, Stanley W. Brown of Columbia, S.C., Ollie M. Brown of Ahoskie and Shirley P. Brown of Colerain.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Henderson by the Rev. Dr. Paul W. Baxle. Edna P. Albertson

PORTSMOUTH, Va. -Edna Ponton Albertson, 80, a native of Buchanan, Va., died February 10, 2005, at Sentara Nursing Center. She was the widow of Ayden Albertson.

Mrs. Albertson was a member of West Norfolk Baptist Church and was a member of the adult choir, women’s missionary union, women’s circle, taught in the Sunday school department of the church and also taught the G.A.’s. She worked at St. Julian’s Creek Ammunition Depot and later for General Electric as a processor.

Survivors include three daughters, Lolita Alton of Easley, S.C., Ayden Gail Wills of Norfolk and Barbara Hollis of Portsmouth; one son, Ronnie Albertson of Chesapeake; two sisters, Martha of Portsmouth and Annie Webb of Eure; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. in the Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel of Sturtevant Funeral Home Saturday by the Rev. Tom Potter. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Ann O. Ralph

SUFFOLK, Va. – Joyce Ann Overman Ralph, 65, a native of Hobbsville, died February 9, 2005, in her home.

Mrs. Ralph was formerly a member of Eureka Baptist Church where she had been active in the choir and the church nursery.

Survivors include her husband, Mayor Bobby L. Ralph: one daughter, Wendy Blausey of Suffolk: one sister, Carolyn Antis of Suffolk; and one grandson.

Otis J. Thompson

ROXOBEL n Otis James Thompson, 70, a native of Bertie County, died February 5, 2005 in Murfreesboro.

A funeral was conducted Thursday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Lycurgus R. Harrell. Burial was in the Moore family cemetery, Rich Square. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, was in charge.

Thompson was retired from New York Transit Authority as deputy superintendent. He was a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Roxobel, a member of Royal Lodge #, Roanoke Consistory #284, Williamston, Rofelt Pasha Shrine Temple #175, Rocky Mount, past Potentate of the Temple, past commander-in-chief, Recorder for the Desert.

Survivors include his daughters, Theresa Thompson of Lewiston, Angela Thompson of Rich Square, Mona Lisa Mosses of Bronx, N.Y., Regina Edwards of Virginia and Rasheena Thompson of Lewiston; sons, Samuel Wright of New York, James Harvin of New Jersey, Sharn Thompson of Lewiston; and a brother, Willie H. Thompson of Rich Square; one sister, Florence Deans of Woodland.

Robert Melton Sr.

AULANDER n Robert Melton Sr., 78, a native of Bertie County, died February 10, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church Aulander by the Rev. Johnnie Speller. Burial will be in the church cemetery, Aulander. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Melton was retired.

Survivors include his daughters, Edith Powell of Lewiston and Mary Harris of Los Angeles, Calif.; sons, Robert Melton Jr. of Windsor and Ervin Melton of Windsor; one brother; two sisters; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Joseph Flythe Sr.

WOODLAND n Joseph Johnson Flythe, Sr., 74, died Friday, February 11, 2005 at his home in Woodland. He had been preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Little and Kate Belle Johnson Flythe, and a daughter, Lisa Kay Flythe.

A native of Northampton County, he was graduated from High Point College and received his Law Degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. Returning to Northampton, be became Assistant District Attorney and practiced law for 36 years in Ahoskie, Rich Square and in earlier times in Conway. He had, also, been a farmer.

Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Kay Hollenbeck Flythe of their home; two daughters, Rheta Flythe Cloutier and her husband, Roger, of Rocky Mount, and Viva Flythe Brown and her husband, Tom, of Rich Square; two sons, Joseph Johnson Flythe, Jr. and his wife, Beth Dilday Flythe, of Camden, and Isaac Frederick Flythe of Woodland; five great-grandchildren, Joseph and Samantha Cloutier of Rocky Mount, Amelia Kate Brown of Rich Square, Tabitha Lynn and Jesse Thomas Flythe of Camden; one great-grandson, Shawn Thomas Smith of Rocky Mount; and one sister, Marjorie Whitley of Franklin, Va.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, 2 p.m. at Zion United Methodist Church by the Rev. Sid Collins. Burial will follow in the Town of Conway Cemetery.

The family will be receiving friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway, Saturday 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the family home.

COLERAIN n Mamie Newbern, died February 9, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

Jesse R. Peoples

MURFREESBORO n Jesse R. Peoples, 64, a native of Hertford County, died February 9, 2005 at Maryview Hospital, Portsmouth, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church Murfreesboro by the Rev. Robert D. Richardson III. Burial will be in Carver's Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, send donations to George T. Rouson Building Fund, c/o First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 396, Murfreesboro, NC 27855.

Peoples was a laborer with Stop & Shop, Inc. and a member of First Baptist Church Murfreesboro.

Peoples, Trenneth Pace and Malcolm Pace, all of Boston, MA; two daughters, Jacqueline Howze of Cleveland, OH and Monica Jones of Boston; three brothers, Theotis Williams of New York, Bernard Peoples of Boston and Willie Lee Peoples of Murfreesboro; three sisters, Virginia Dare Peoples and Bunnie Peoples, both of Murfreesboro and Barbara Ridley of Portsmouth; and one grandchild.

Daisy A. Outland

MENOLA n Mrs. Daisy Atkinson Outland, age 91, died at Autumn Care of Roanoke Valley Nursing Home in Rich Square, NC on Thursday, February 10, 2005. Mrs. Outland was a native of Bladen County. Preceding her in death are her parents; Roger P. and Maggie Sutton Atkinson of White Lake, NC, her husband, Oscar Glenn Outland of Menola, her sister, Hazel A. Smith, her brothers, Rob, Guy, Durwood, Stacey and Mitchell, all of White Lake.

Mrs. Outland was a long time resident of Menola and worked for many years with CADA, until she was unable due to health reasons. She was a member for over fifty years, of the Menola Home Makers Club, Menola Baptist Church and the WMU.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Burke and husband, Johnnie, Linda Lindsay and husband Jerry, all of Menola. Also surviving are four grandsons; David Burke and wife Tammy, Philip Burke and fianc\u00E9e Gail, Robert Lindsay and wife Bobbie Joe, Thomas Lindsay and wife Mandy; one great-grandson, Christopher Burke and two great-granddaughters, Kelly Burke and Caroline Lindsay.

Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, February 13, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Menola Baptist Church with the Rev. Cecil Harkey, William Burkett, and Mary Johnson officiating. The interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro, NC.

AHOSKIE n Melissa S. Savage, 28, a native of Hertford County, died February 10, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church by Pastor Larry Nichols. Burial will be in Nichols cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Miss Savage was a teacher assistant at Better Child Care. She was a member of Faith Temple.

Survivors include her parents, Melinda Savage and William Savage, both of Colerain; two brothers, Derrick Savage and William Savage Jr., both of Colerain; two brothers, Jessica Savage of Colerain and Katrina Savage of Winton; and her maternal grandmother, Hattie Nichols.
