Jay Rogers

HERTFORD – Claude Junior &uot;Jay&uot; Rogers, 75, a native of Barre, Vt., died February 6, 2005, in Down East Health and Rehab Center, Gatesville.

Rogers retired from the U.S. Navy as an E-6 after serving 20 years and later retired from the quality assurance department of the civil service.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Elizabeth Speechley Rogers; two daughters, JoAnn Wallace of Marietta, Ga., and Marilynn Rogers of Seaboard; two sisters, Jackie Marra and Peggy Saliba, both of Massachusetts; two brothers, Ronald Rogers and George Rogers, both of California; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Chapel On The Sound with the Rev. Tom Oliver. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Alzheimer’s Research, 358 Mowbray Arch, Norfolk, VA 23507. Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services of Hertford is in charge.

Hilliard Clanton

JACKSON n Hilliard Clanton, 84, died February 7, 2005 at North Carolina Special Care in Wilson.

Leonard White

MERRY HILL n Leonard Carson White, 79, a native of Bertie County, died February 7, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Al Jarrell. Memorial gifts may be given to the charity of your choice.

White was retired from VEPCO after 28 years of service and also served his country in the US Army during WWII. He was also a member of South Norfolk Moose Lodge #464 and a past Governor and fellow of the order for 40 years.

Survivors include his wife, Blanche F. White of Merry Hill; two sons, Larry White of Virginia Beach, Va., and Ronald White of Norfolk; a daughter, Donna Smith of Virginia Beach; a brother, Jessie White of Tarboro; sisters, Susie Miller and Pauline Turner, both of Colerain, Elizabeth White of Raleigh and Myrtle Ward of Williamston; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Elwood P. Bennett

MURFREESBORO – Elwood Parker Bennett, son of Richard B. Bennett and Susan Parker Bennett Keer, was born September 7, 1958 in Ahoskie, N.C. and died at his home at 1008 Hibiscus Drive Indian Lake Estates, FL. on Saturday, February 5, 2005. He also maintained a residence at 105 West High Street in Murfreesboro, N., C.

He was predeceased by his father Richard B. Bennett; his mother, Susan Parker Bennett Kerr; his twin brother, Richard D. Bennett; his grandfather, Elwood W. Parker; and his grandmother, Elizabeth Sewell Parker.

He is survived by a special friend and companion, Carla B. Marcella, and friends Edmund F. Kelly and wife, Wendy King Kelly of Indian Lake Estates, Fl. and great uncle Jesse D. Sewell and cousins, Nancy Ray Parker Gehring; Sandra E. Barnes; George C. Parker; James E. Parker; Ruth P. Linville; Esther P. Wethington; James L. Bennett, Jr. Pamela Gail Barnes; Deborah Dee Bennette; and Betsy Black Witucki.

He was an avid collector of antique cars and trucks, and was a generous supporter and benefactor of the Elizabeth Sewell Parker Library, The Murfreesboro Historical Association, Inc.; and The Brady C. Jefcoat Museum of Americana all located in Murfreesboro, N.C.

A graveside funeral service will be held Saturday, February 12, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Parker Family Mausoleum, Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro, N.C.

The family will receive friends Saturday from noon to 1:45 p.m. prior to services at Garrett Funeral Home, 314 West Main Street, Murfreesboro, N. C.

In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made to The Murfreesboro Historical Association, Inc.; P.O. Box 3 Murfreesboro N.C.

Pauline B. Adams

MILLENNIUM n Mrs. Pauline B. Adams, age 90, died at the Pinewood Manor Rest Home in Ahoskie, NC on Tuesday, February 08, 2005. Mrs. Adams worked in the retail clothing business for many years. She and her husband made their home in Millennium and attended the Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church. Preceding her in death is her husband, John Quincy Adams, her mother and father, Ellen and Elisha Brown, three sisters, Mae Parker, Penelope White and Martha Johnson and four brothers, Zeb, John, Sam and Hezzie Brown.

Surviving are nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 10, 2005 at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Colerain, NC, with the Rev. Paul Edwards officiating.

The family will visit with friends following the graveside service.

Hallie M. Williams

AHOSKIE n Hallie Mead Williams, 76, of 805 East 1st Street, died February 7, 2005, at her residence.

Mrs. Williams was a retired custodian from Ahoskie Graded School. She was a member of New Bethany Baptist Church, Harrellsville, NC. She also enjoyed sewing.

Survivors include her husband, Conner Williams of the home; two sons, Robert Earl Williams (Ruth) of Powellsville, NC and Joe Willie Williams of Hampton, VA; four daughters, May F. Privott (David) of Cofield, NC, Marrice Cain (Ryland) of Garysburg, NC, Martha Weaver (Robert) of Ahoskie, NC and Christine White (Carlton) of Powellsville, NC; one brother, Odell Overton (Ethel) of Ahoskie, NC; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one brother-in-law and one sister-in-law.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, February 11, 2005 at New Bethany Baptist Church by the Rev. William Clark. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is serving the Williams family.

Ivey L. Battle

ROCKY MOUNT n Ivey Leon Battle, 73, died February 5, 2005, at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Light of Peace Baptist Church, Rocky Mount, by the Rev. Lonnie Braswell. Interment will be in Gardens of Gethsemane Cemetery. A visitation will be held Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. in the chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount.

Louis E. Wynn

NORFOLK, Va. – Louis Earl Wynn, 62, died January 27, 2005.

A graveside service was conducted February 8, 2005, in the Wilder-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge.

Jannie Hardy

AULANDER n Jannie Mae Futrell Hardy, 73, a native of Bertie County, died February 5, 2005 in Newport News, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon at Metropolitan Interdenominational Church of God, Aulander, by Bishop Anthony Cherry. Burial will be in Aulander Cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Hardy was a member of Metropolitan Interdenominational Church of God and a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughters, Deborah Applewhite of Newport News, Jane Ellen Taylor of Cofield, Linda Allen of Aulander and Velma Marie Horton of Aulander; sons, Roy Lee Futrell of Murfreesboro, Minister Willie Futrell of Rich Square and Michael Hardy of Aulander; seven brothers, George Futrell of Aulander, James Futrell and Walter Futrell, both of Ahoskie, Alvin Futrell of Newport News, Joseph Futrell of Murfreesboro, Edward Futrell of Kelford and Charles Futrell of Newport News; three sisters, Josie Mae Fennell of Aulander, Elnora Whitaker of Aulander and Dolly Dukes of Aulander; 17 grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

Otis J. Thompson

MURFREESBORO – Otis &uot;O.J.&uot; James Thompson, 70, died February 5, 2005.

Flood of Durham, Diane Smith of Virginia Beach, Va., Robbin Stephenson and Kim Murphy, both of Murfreesboro; two stepsons, Robert L. Smith of Waldorf and Keith H. Manley of Greensboro; one sister, Marie Macon of Raleigh; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Parkers Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Fernando Temple and Pastor B.C. Williams Jr. Burial will be in the Gatling family cemetery, Mapleton. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Graveside services for Tamajai Northington, infant, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Greater Ashley Chapel Church and Cemetery in Vaughan, N.C., by the Rev. Nathaniel Bunn.

GASTON n William F. Ingram, 55, died February 3, 2005 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.
