MURFREESBORO – It never pays to attempt to escape the long arm of the law.

Two local men learned that lesson the hard way here early Sunday morning where they tried to elude a pair of Murfreesboro police officers after committing a traffic violation.

Derrick Edwards, 24, of Conway and Antwoine Vaughan, 18, of Murfreesboro were arrested following a foot chase after they both bailed out of a moving car that was traveling on Irvin Road.

According to Murfreesboro Police Chief Darrell Rowe, MPD Sgt. Mike Patterson and Officer Larry Newsome were on routine patrol when they noticed a 1985 Cadillac that failed to stop for a stop sign on Powell Road.

Activating the patrol car’s blue light and siren, the officers attempted to stop the driver of the car (later discovered to be Edwards). However, the car sped away, leaving the officers in pursuit.

Chief Rowe reported that the subjects jumped out of the car while it was traveling along Irvin Road. The car continued to travel along Irvin Road before coming to rest in a ditch.

The officers gave chase on foot and were able to quickly apprehend the two subjects.

Edwards was charged with driving while license were revoked, speeding to elude arrest and careless and reckless driving. He was taken before a Magistrate at the Murfreesboro Police Department, placed under a $4,500 bond and taken to the Hertford County Jail.

Vaughan – charged with resist, obstruct and delay – also faced the Magistrate. He paid a $1,000 bond and was released pending his court date.

Rowe commended both officers for their work.
