Dorothy B. Scott

FRANKLIN, Va. – Dorothy Benn Scott, 73, a native of Accomack, died January 13, 2005, in Louise Obici Hospital. She was the widow of James H. Scott Sr.

Mrs. Scott was a housewife and a member of O’Berry AME Zion Church and its usher and steward boards.

Survivors include her daughters, Louise E. Scott of Franklin and Jean S. Porter of Ahoskie; a son, John T. Scott of Franklin; sisters, Ann Parker of Courtland, Loretta Cook and Ursula Hoskie, both of Franklin; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.  

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in O’Berry AME Zion Church, Franklin, by the Rev. Conley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Elvin Vaughan Funeral Home is in charge.

James T. Deloatch Sr.

FRANKLIN, Va. – James Thomas &uot;Skeeter&uot; Deloatch Sr., a native of Severn, died January 12, 2005, in Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.

Deloatch was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a trustee for 52 years. He was also a member of the Official Board and Finance Board. After 43 years of service, he retired from the Tidewater News.

Survivors include his wife, Helen M. Deloatch; two daughters, Helen Lenora Hambrick of Franklin and Veretta D. Riddick of Suffolk; a son, James T. Deloatch Jr.; his mother, Essie M. Deloatch of Franklin; two brothers, Samuel Deloatch of Franklin and George Deloatch of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A service was conducted Monday in First Baptist Church by the Rev. Henry Blunt. Burial was in Southview Cemetery. Wm.M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home Inc. was in charge.

George E. Hill

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – George E. Hill, 69, formerly of Windsor, died January 10, 2005.

A funeral was conducted at Bazemore Temple COGIC. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery. Puckett-Purkett Funeral Service, Windsor, was in charge.

Helen H. Irvin

SEABOARD – Helen Harris Irvin, 83, a native of Northampton County, died January 16, 2005 at Hampton-Woods Nursing Home, Jackson. She was the widow of Harvey Irvin.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Seaboard Cemetery by the Rev. Charles Harris. Flowers are welcomed, however memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 8th Ave., 6th Floor, New York, NY 10001. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.

Mrs. Irvin was a member of Seaboard United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Judy Irvin Jones of Chinquapin and Claire Irvin Hall of Seaboard; a sister, Odell Edwards of Virginia Beach, V a.; half sisters, Joyce Ericson of Houston, Texas and Madge Thorpe of Lake City, Fla.; half brothers, Joseph Harris of Gastonia, the Rev. Charles Harris of Winton and Thad Harris of Littleton; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Eleanor Elks

LASKER – Eleanor Charlotte Jones Elks, 77, died January 15, 2005 at her home. She was the widow of Fred Richard Elks.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lasker Baptist Church by Dr. Brian Detrick. Burial will be in Lasker Cemetery. The family will receive from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emanuel Worship Center for Romania Missions, 1215 Julian Alsbrook Hwy., Weldon, NC 27890.

Mrs. Elks worked at the Valley Pine Golf Course Pro Shop and was a member of Creeksville Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Elks Holmes of Roanoke Rapids; her son, Fred Richard Elks Jr. of San Diego, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Dorothy Harrell

JACKSON – Mrs. Dorothy &uot;Dotty&uot; Bennett Harrell, age 49, of Jackson, NC, died January 15, 2005 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC.

Mrs. Harrell was born July 20, 1955 in Hertford County, NC, the daughter of the late Henry Bennett and Dorothy &uot;Dot&uot; Wheeler Bennett. She graduated from Northeast Academy and East Carolina University and was a registered nurse who had worked for many years at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids. She was a former member of Rich Square Baptist Church and now a member of Jackson Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include her husband, Brode Horest &uot;Hank&uot; Harrell Jr.; her son, Chris Harrell and two daughters, Rebecca Harrell and Meredith Harrell, all of the home; her sister, Juanita Bennett Davis and her husband, Charles of Roanoke Rapids, NC; her brothers, Gene Bennett and his wife, Joyce, Steve Bennett and his wife, Pat, and Henry Bennett and his wife, Gail, all of Rich Square, NC; her father and mother-in-law, Brodie and Susan Harrell of Jackson, NC; her sister-in-law, Susan H. Leuthold and her husband, Dale of Berlin, Maryland; and her brother-in-law, Paul Harrell and his wife, Dixie of Jackson, NC; her nieces and nephews, Catherine Davis, Ben Davis, Sara Bennett, Nathan Bennett, Brooke Bennett, Jeb Bennett, Brittany Bennett, Corey Bennett, Elizabeth Jenkins, Brodie Harrell and Davis Harrell.

Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Jackson Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Howell and the Rev. Bob Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at Jackson Cemetery.

The family received friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Monday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home.

Virginell McCarter

ROCKY MOUNT – Virginell W. McCarter, 67, died January 15, 2005 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

Gladys Green

ROANOKE RAPIDS – Gladys Green, 55, died January 15, 2005 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.
