MILLENNIUM – A joy ride with a stolen vehicle didn’t last long here earlier this week.

It also landed two local men behind bars.

The incident took place shortly past 10 p.m. on Monday where a Millennium man, delivering food to a relative, discovered he was without the vehicle he had parked in the driveway of his uncle’s home.

According to Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan, a 2003 Dodge Neon was reported as missing by its owner, Steven Ray Lassiter of Millennium.

The Sheriff said Deputy Allen Archer was dispatched to Millennium to take the incident report. Vaughan stated that Archer, upon speaking with Lassiter, was told that the vehicle was left running as Lassiter delivered food to his uncle’s residence, located at 340 Millennium Road.

&uot;When Mr. Lassiter came out of his uncle’s home, he realized his car was missing,&uot; said the Sheriff.

After talking with Lassiter, Deputy Archer returned to his patrol vehicle. There, on the police radio, Archer heard that a Dodge Neon was parked at an Aulander convenience store, located just a short distance away.

Archer, who in the meantime had contacted the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office and the Aulander Police Department, drove to that location where he spotted the stolen car. He noted two passengers were sitting in the front seat.

&uot;As Deputy Archer pulled up behind the Dodge, the passenger on the driver’s side exited the car and ran,&uot; Vaughan said. &uot;Deputy Archer gave chase on foot and was able to overtake the suspect.&uot;

That suspect was 20-year-old Jacque Antonio Cumbo of 509 Arbor Drive, Aulander.

Meanwhile, a Bertie Sheriff’s deputy and the Aulander Police apprehended the second suspect, Jessie Jerome Futrell, 22, of 102 Jernigan Swamp Apartments, Ahoskie.

For the Hertford County portion of the alleged crime, both men were charged with felonious breaking and entering of a vehicle. Each was placed under a $25,000 cash bond.

In Bertie County, the duo faces charges of felonious possession of stolen goods, larceny and breaking and entering of a motor vehicle. Their bonds were set at $11,000 cash prior to being incarcerated in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail.
