AHOSKIE – Closed until further notice.

That’s the message greeting Roanoke-Chowan area citizens if they visit the North Carolina Drivers License Examiner’s Office near Ahoskie. That location was closed after a suspect or suspects broke into the office sometimes last weekend.

According to Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan, the crime was not discovered until shortly past 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22. The Sheriff said all the equipment vital to the operation of the office was stolen – computer monitor, hard drive, keyboard, desktop camera and printer. Those items are used to produce official DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) driver’s licenses and other types of official identification.

The office has been closed all of this week. It is not known when it will reopen. A phone call placed yesterday (Friday) to the North Carolina DMV office in Raleigh was not returned.

Sheriff Vaughan is soliciting assistance in solving this crime. Those with any information are urged to contact the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office at 358-7800.
