AHOSKIE n Sometimes runs come at just the right time.

Such was the case for the Lady Bears here Friday night when they used an 11-0 spurt in overtime to knock off Northeastern Coastal Conference foe Currituck 56-48.

Trailing by three (47-44) in the overtime session, HCHS used consecutive buckets from Danequa Fennell to take a 47-46 lead with three minutes to play and then hit 8-of-10 from the line to ice the game.

Those free throws came from Chiquitta Holloman, Fennell, RonGina Wilder and Rasheena Speller as the Lady Bears held on to improve their league record to 3-5 on the season while improving to 6-8 overall.

The 12 points scored in overtime were an offensive showcase and came as a stark contrast to the fourth quarter when the two clubs combined for seven total points.

Hertford County trailed 41-40 heading into the final period and took the lead briefly with 4:40 to play on a Fennell field goal.

Tiffany Ether answered 40 seconds later for the Lady Knights to push Currituck back into a one-point advantage (43-42).

The Lady Bears clung to a one-point advantage for over a minute when Fennell's hoop at the 2:15 mark put them into the lead, but Ether hit a free throw with 59 seconds to play that sent the game into overtime.

Hertford County appeared poised to run away with the contest early in the second quarter.

Wilder, Kenya Cofield and Holloman scored six unanswered to lift Hertford County's one-point first quarter advantage to eight (19-11).

Following an exchange of hoops, Holloman hit back-to-back buckets to lift the Lady Bears to a 25-16 advantage.

Currituck trimmed the lead to six (29-23) at the intermission and climbed back into the contest with a 10-0 run in the third quarter. Jennie Phelps scored eight of her team-high 17 points during that stretch that left the game deadlocked at 31-all.

Hertford County was led by Holloman (21), Fennell (14) and Wilder (13).

The Lady Bears will host Edenton Tuesday evening in Ahoskie.
