Frances C. Brown

MURFREESBORO – Frances Brown Cole, 92, died December 31, 2004 at Guardian Care in Ahoskie. She was the widow of Joseph &uot;Joe&uot; Cole.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Meherrin Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy Sellers. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Meherrin Baptist Church Elevator Fund, Murfreesboro, NC 27855. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, was in charge.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Millard Carpenter

MARGARETTSVILLE – Millard Nathan &uot;Junnie&uot; Carpenter, 83, died December 30, 2004 at Rex Hospital, Raleigh.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Sharon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tommy Glover. Burial was in Seaboard Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Wake County, Inc., 1300 St. Mary’s Street, Fourth Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605 or Sharon United Methodist Church, c/o Mr. Ted Woodard, 2010 Severn Road, Margarettsville, NC 27853. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, was in charge.

Carpenter was a rural mail carrier the Margarettsville area for more than 40 years. He was a partner in the agricultural firm of Blythe ad Carpenter, and he and his father were the proprietors of Carpenters Store in Margarettsville.

He was a World War II Army-Air Force veteran who flew 21 combat missions while station in Europe. He was also an active member of the Seaboard Lions Club and the Seaboard Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Britton Carpenter; his daughter, Becky Carpenter Morey of Camden; his son, Millard Nathan Carpenter III of Raleigh; and two grandchildren.

Gunny Britt-Joyner

HYATTSVILLE, Md. – Gunny Louise Britt-Joyner, 82, formerly of Northampton County, died December 29, 2004, at Saint Thomas More Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

A celebration of life was conducted Saturday at First Baptist Church, Severn, by the Rev. Elisha Barnes. Interment was in the church cemetery. Faison’s Funeral Home, Inc., Seaboard, was in charge.

Lillie M. Wiley

ELIZABETH CITY – Lillie Mae Rountree Wiley, 68, a native of Gates County, died December 30, 2004 at her home.

A funeral service was conducted Sunday at Eure Christian Church by the Rev. Roland Cooper and the Rev. Jake Mullins. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Gideon’s International at P.O. Box 1113, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or to Foreign Missions in care of Woodville Baptist Church, 151 Woodville Rd., Hertford, NC 27944. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.

Mrs. Wiley was a homemaker and a member of Woodville Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Luby A. Wiley Sr.; a son, Arnold Wiley of Elizabeth City; a sister, Nancy R. Bazemore of Cofield; a brother, Otis C. Rountree Jr. of Chesapeake, Va.; and three grandchildren.

William Vaughan

CONWAY – William Lewis Vaughan, 87, a native of Northampton County, died December 31, 2004 at his home.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Margarettsville Baptist Church. Burial was in Seaboard Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Margarettsville Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Mr. Jack Harlan, Treasurer, P.O. Box 42, Margarettsville, NC 27853. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, was in charge.

Vaughan was a veteran of World War II and a Pearl Harbor Survivor aboard the hospital ship, USS Solace. He received an honorable discharge as Chief Warrant Officer with 10 years of Naval service.

Survivors include his wife, Leonora Hall Vaughan; and nieces and nephews.

Rosa H. Williams

ROXOBEL – Rosa Harris Williams, 76, a native of Northampton County, died December 30, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Thursday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander.

Mrs. Williams was a homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Annette Harvey of Roxobel; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Myrtle T. White

ASKEWVILLE – Myrtle Thompson White, 75, a native of Bertie County, died January 20, 2005. She was the widow of Herman F. White.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. R.O. Denton Jr. Memorials gifts may be made to either the Bertie County Rescue Squad or to the Askewville Fire Department. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Mrs. White was a homemaker and attended Askewville Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Martin White; a daughter, Shellie Mitchell; a sister, Page Smirk, all of Windsor; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Vernice Vinson

AULANDER – Vernice &uot;Vernie&uot; Vinson, a native of Hertford County, died January 1, 2005, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Zion Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Lebron Britt Jr. Burial will be in Ambrose Memorial Gardens, Aulander. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

She was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Mennie Pennywell of Wingdale, NY; two brothers, Robert L. Vinson of Woodland and William R. Vinson of Ahoskie; and a foster sister, Lorraine Reid of Clay, N.Y.

Marie C. Rawls

WOODLAND – Marie Conner Rawls, 84, a native of Bertie County, died January 2, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, by the Rev. Earl Whittmore. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery.

Mrs. Rawls was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Fred S. Rawls of the home; and a sister, Viva Hoffman of Currituck.

Winefred Reid

GATES – Winefred Taylor Gatling Reid, 81, died January 1, 2005 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. John A.M.E. Zion Church, Sunbury, by the Rev. Samuel Buck. Burial will be in the Gatling family cemetery, Sunbury. Stallings Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

Survivors include two daughters, Pamela G. Williams of Durham and Belinda G. Banks of Goldsboro; four sons, Charles Reid of Chesapeake, Va., Michael Reid of Alexandria, Barry Reid of Carrolton and Darrell Reid of Herndon; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Lucy A. Parker

WINDSOR – Lucy Ann Parker, 73, died December 24, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral was conducted Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004 at Pillar of Fire Tabernacle Church by the Apostle T.L. Baylor. Burial was in the Parker family cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge.

Survivors include four children, Beulah Speller of Windsor, Lee Parker of Aulander, George Parker of Williamston and Ray Charles Parker of Windsor; four sisters and two brothers, Isolena Parker and Mary Parker of Windsor, Shirley Cherry and Inell Duggar of New York, Sammie Parker of New York and George Parker of Connecticut; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

William W. Burden

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – William Willis Burden, 86, a native of Aulander, died January 1, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, by the Revs. Tom Wood, Tim Dixon and Don Sheffield. Entombment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the National Kidney Foundation.

Burden retired as the superintendent of Buildings and Grounds at Tidewater Community College. Mr. Burden was a member of Westhaven Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Verlie H. Burden; a daughter, Vicki A. Burden of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Keith S. Whitt

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Keith S. Whitt, 70, died December 30, 2004.

The family received Sunday at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, where a funeral was held Monday. Interment was at Colonial Grove Memorial Park.

Whitt retired as a self-employed drywall mechanic.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Whitt; his children, Keith Whitt and Brenda Whitt, both of Baltimore, Robert Whitt, Elizabeth Goldblatt and Crystal Humphrey, all of Virginia Beach, Patricia Whitt of Gates; three sisters, Pearl Millionie of Florida, Louise Montogomery and Freda Whitt, both of Rose Hill, Va; two brothers, Jimmy Whitt of Rose Hill and Bob Whitt of Colorado; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson.

Terry L. Brown

AULANDER – Terry L. Brown, 30, died December 31, 2004.

Survivors include his mother, Jane R. Brown; and his brothers, Jerry and Danny Brown, all of Aulander.

A graveside service was conducted Sunday at Cedarlawn Cemetery in Rich Square Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, was in charge.

Frances B. Cole

MURFREESBORO – Frances Brown Cole, 92, died December 31, 2004 at Guardian Care in Ahoskie.

A funeral was conducted

Robert Jillcott

ROXOBEL – Robert William &uot;Bill&uot; Jillcott, a native of Roxobel, died January 2, 2005.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday by Dr. David Rimel. Burial will be in Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Sykes Funeral Service from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Jillcott was a veteran of the US Army. He was a member and served as a deacon on two occasion at Sandy Run Baptist Church.

Survivors include his sister, Frances Jillcott Benson; a nephew; and two nieces.

Meryl Cullipher

MERRY HILL – Merlin Vance Cullipher, 51, of the 1400 block of NC 45, North, died Saturday, January 1, 2005 in Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

Mr. Cullipher was born in Hertford County and was the son of Alice Riddick Cullipher of Merry Hill and the late Milton Vance Cullipher. A mail carrier for the US Postal Service with 21 years of service he was also a farmer. Mr. Cullipher was a member, deacon, and choir member at Riverside Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother he is survived by his brother, Jack Cullipher and wife Betty of Columbia, SC; three nieces, Mary Daniels and husband Mark of Colerain, Martha Kirby and husband Don of Union, KY, and Elizabeth Pollard and husband J.B. of Falmouth, KY; a nephew, Jimmy Cullipher and wife Dreama of Creedmoor, NC; four great nieces three great nephews, and many extended family members.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Riverside Baptist Church by the Rev. Al Jarrell. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Colerain with Miller Funeral Home of Edenton handing arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to Riverside Baptist Church or the Colerain Rescue Squad.

Edward L. Womble

RICH SQUARE – Edward Lee Womble, age 86, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, died Sunday, January 2, 2005 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

A native of Bertie County he was born January 12, 1918. He was the son of the late Irving Cree Womble and Ivie Lee Shoulars Womble. He was retired from the United States Postal Service after thirty-four years of service, during which he was postmaster at the Rich Square Post Office for 20 years and Postmaster of the Year for Northampton County. A member of the Rich Square Baptist Church, he served as a member of the board of deacons. He was a member of the Rich Square Lions Club, Rich Square Rotary Club, and the American Legion.

Mr. Womble served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Army and was part of the U.S. occupation forces in the Philippines.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years, Margaret Martin Womble; a daughter, Mary Lee Bailey and husband Jeff, of Durham; two sons, Edward Franklin Womble and wife Gloria of Suffolk, Va., and Wayne Louis Womble and wife, Sylvia of Raleigh; and two grandsons, Edward Bradley Bailey of Greensboro and Matthew Charles Bailey of Durham.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 5, at 2 p.m. at the Rich Square Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Bob Rogers. Burial with military honors will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Rich Square.

The family will receive friends at the Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square from 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening, and have requested that anyone wishing to share a memorial gift to do so to Rich Square Baptist Church, P.O. Box 589, Rich Square, NC 27869.
