Windsor man faces felony charges

WINDSOR – An apparent high-speed chase has resulted in a Windsor man, Rodney Outlaw, being arrested and charged with numerous violations including charges of drug possession.

According to Sgt. Frank Timberlake of the Narcotics Division of the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office, Det. K. Gilliam observed a motorist allegedly run a red light on US 13/17 South in Windsor.

When Gilliam turned around on the vehicle and attempted to stop it, Timberlake said the driver sped up, leading the officer on a chase that ended when the motorist was able to elude law enforcement and vanished off the Pleasant Oak Road.

&uot;Det. Gilliam was able to identify the driver of the vehicle and we had a make on the vehicle, which was a late model black Nissan Altima,&uot; Timberlake said.

Bertie Sheriff’s deputies, personnel with the North Carolina Probation and Parole and the North Carolina Wildlife Agency assisted in a search for vehicle for several hours.

&uot;Bertie Chief Deputy J. Holley was familiar with the suspect we were looking for and knew he lived on the Indian Woods Road,&uot; Timberlake said. &uot;[Holley] was able to locate the vehicle parked in a yard on that road, but the driver was not to be found at that time.&uot;

The vehicle was impounded and searched.

&uot;We found a small amount of cocaine in the seat of the car,&uot; Timberlake said. &uot;We also were about to locate [Outlaw] thanks to several tips from citizens who also knew him.&uot;

Timberlake said Outlaw was seen at a residence on the St. Frances Road, but that he ran and after a short foot pursuit, officers apprehended him in a wooded area.

&uot;We searched his person and found an additional amount of what we believed to be crack cocaine,&uot; Timberlake said. &uot;He was taken to the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office where he was processed, charged and then take to Bertie-Martin Regional Jail.

Outlaw has been charged with felony eluding arrest, careless and reckless driving, two counts of possession of cocaine and one count of failure to appear on child support charges.
