Conway man held in vehicle theft

WINTON – The Southampton County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia is holding a suspect believed to be involved in the theft of a motor vehicle near Murfreesboro.

Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan said his office received a call in reference to a stolen 1991 Gold Volvo 740 around 6:15 p.m. Dec. 31.

The car was reportedly taken from 118 Daughtry Road near Murfreesboro where the owner stated she left the vehicle running while she awaiting the resident here to open the door.

&uot;As she turned to look, she noticed her car being driven off,&uot; said Vaughan. &uot;Responding officer, Deputy J. Joyner, put out a be on the look out for a black male along with the description of the car,&uot; Vaughan said.

At 7:41 p.m. the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office received work from Southampton officers that the vehicle has been recovered and that a black male had jumped from the car and run.

&uot;At approximately 9:50 p.m., we received work that Southampton officials had apprehended the suspect,&uot; Vaughan said.

Andre Jerome Howard, 21, of Conway is being held in Southampton County Jail and awaits to extradited from Virginia later this week.

Howard will be charged with larceny of a motor vehicle.

&uot;I want to commend Deputy Joyner and the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office for outstanding work on this case. The fast work of the officers involved in Southampton County was remarkable,&uot; Vaughan said.
