LASKER – Northeast Academy poured in 24, fourth-quarter points as the varsity boys team defeated Southampton Academy, 62-51, in the Greater Lasker Shootout Wednesday night.

&uot;We missed a lot of easy shots, but we pulled it out and got a good win,&uot; Northeast head coach John Brown said of his team’s performance in the final game on the first night of competition.

The teams traded baskets in the first quarter, with Northeast holding on to an 8-7 lead.

Brian McLean got the Eagles started in the second period, taking Rich Edwards’ pass to the basket.

Buddy Duke added two foul shots and another from McLean to put Northeast out front, 13-7.

Southampton’s Caleb Pearson hit a trey to pull the Raiders back within three, 13-10, but two McLean foul shots and a Duke basket extended Northeast’s lead to seven, 17-10.

Lance Jenkins put Ryan Davis’s pass in for two and then added two free throws to give the Eagles a 15-11 lead at the half.

A fired up Raiders team came out in the second half as Southampton scored 19 points to pull within one, 38-37, at the end of the third.

Clay Pearson started the scoring in the third, hitting two foul shots.

Barry Barrett hit a basket for the Eagles, then converted a three-point play to put Northeast up 28-20.

The teams traded baskets, with Southampton outscoring Northeast 6-0 in the final minute of the quarter.

Edwards hit a trey for Northeast to start the fourth quarter and the Eagles never looked back.

Following two foul shots by Clay Pearson, Edwards stole the ball, hitting the basket and the subsequent foul shot to put the Eagles up 44-39.

Duke was fouled as he hit the next basket.

Duke swished the foul shot for a 47-39 lead.

Southampton’s second leading scorer fouled out of the game on the play.

McLean hit two free throws, followed by a Jenkins basket.

McLean hit back-to-back buckets to put the Eagles ahead 55-41.

Southampton hit three baskets and a trey, but couldn’t overcome the deficit as Northeast won, 62-51.

&uot;We were out of our regular rotation with Brian (McLean) having an ankle injury,&uot; Brown said.

&uot;Lance stepped in and played extremely well.&uot;

Duke led the Eagles with 15 points, followed by McLean with 14 and Edwards with 13.

Barrett and Jenkins each had a steal for Northeast.

Northeast played Brunswick Academy (VA) in Thursday night’s match up.

LASKER – Turnovers plagued the Lady Rams as Ridgecroft fell to Roanoke Rapids High School, 34-29, in opening round action of the Greater Lasker Shootout here Wednesday.

Ridgecroft took an early lead after a basket by Stephanie Northcott and back-to-back buckets from Sarah Beth Greene put the Lady Rams ahead 6-2.

Jessica Warren and Sasha Medina hit buckets for the Yellow Jackets and Crystal Jeffries added a trey to put Roanoke Rapids out front, 9-6.

Jessica Misse took Brittany Taylor’s pass to the basket for Ridgecroft to pull within one, but Erin Howell hit a bucket to give the Yellow Jackets an 11-8 lead going into the second period.

Ridgecroft’s Jessica Misse hit the first basket of the second, and a Northcott foul shot tied the score at 11.

Taylor assisted on Greene’s next basket, which put Ridgecroft ahead, 13-12, but Roanoke Rapids went on a 7-0 run to take a 19-13 lead at the half.

Amber Walker and Warren had a foul shot apiece to extend the Yellow Jackets lead, 21-13 at the start of the third.

Ridgecroft fought back as Misse converted a three-point play.

Landis Joyner hit two foul shots and Hayes Bryant added another free throw to pull the Lady Rams within three, 21-18.

Following a Walker foul shot, Greene hit two free throws and Joyner scored a basket to tie the score at 22.

Walker hit two foul shots as time expired to put Roanoke Rapids ahead, 24-22, at the close of the third quarter.

Misse scored the first bucket of the final quarter to tie the score at 24.

Roanoke Rapids pulled ahead, but Ridgecroft tied the score at 27 after three Ridgecroft foul shots.

Roanoke Rapids went on a 7-0 run to pull ahead, 34-27.

Joyner hit two foul shots in the final seconds, but it wasn’t enough as the Yellow Jackets pulled out a 34-29 victory.

&uot;We didn’t protect the ball,&uot; said Ridgecroft head coach Doug Cobb, whose team recorded 30 turnovers.

&uot;Turnovers and to many second opportunities for them did us in,&uot; Cobb added.

Misse led Ridgecroft with 10 points and a blocked shot.

Ridgecroft faced Southampton Academy in Thursday night’s action at the Greater Lasker Shootout.

LASKER – Northeast Academy was held to one point in the final quarter as Southampton Academy handed the Lady Eagles a 27-20 loss in Wednesday night’s action at the Greater Lasker Shootout.

Lyndal Brown drove up the lane to score the first basket of the night to put Northeast up 2-0.

Sara Felts hit a bucket to tie the score at two.

Meredith Harrell, fouled while shooting a three, converted all three free throws to put the Lady Eagles ahead 5-2.

Felts hit another basket to pull the Lady Raiders within one, 5-4, at the end of the first quarter.

Southampton scored two baskets to start the first half to take an 8-5 lead.

Rebecca Harrell converted a three-point play to tie the score at 8.

Hillary Flythe hit a foul shot and baskets by Brown and M. Harrell gave Northeast a 13-8 lead at the half.

Flythe got the Lady Eagles going in the third, hitting the first basket of the quarter.

Southampton hit three consecutive buckets to pull within one, 15-14.

Brown scored two baskets, but the Lady Raiders scored five points to tie the score at 19 going into the final quarter.

Southampton went on a 7-0 scoring run to take a 26-19 lead. Flythe hit a foul shot with less than 30 seconds remaining, but it wasn’t enough as Northeast fell, 27-20.

&uot;I was pleased with the first half and the first part of the third quarter, but we have to play four quarters to win,&uot; said Lady Eagles head coach Joella Brown.

&uot;We have to do a better job making free throws,&uot; Brown added.

LASKER – Ridgecroft held off a strong second half by the Brunswick Academy (BA) Vikings to pull out a 69-63 win at the Greater Lasker Shootout here Wednesday.

With the score tied at four, Wes Ward took Bryan Britton’s pass to the hoop to give Ridgecroft the lead.

A bucket by Britton and a trey off the hands of Drew Jones extended the Rams lead, 11-4.

Britton answered a basket by BA’s Jeff Hoff.

Hoff added another basket and Bryan Daniel hit two foul shots to pull the Vikings within three, 13-10.

Following a basket by Ward, BA’s David Holloway hit a deuce.

Britton sank a Ridgecroft foul shot, but Corey Morris buried a trey to pull the Vikings to within one.

Ian Kinlaw scored a basket in the final seconds of the first to put Ridgecroft ahead, 18-15.

The teams traded baskets, with BA pulling within two before a Jones three-pointer followed by a Chris Mizelle basket put the Rams out front, 29-22.

Hoff and Holloway hit buckets for BA, but baskets from William Alexander, Jones, and Ward, in addition to a Ward foul shot, gave the Rams a 36-26 lead at the half.

A different BA team took the floor in the second half as the Vikings outscored Ridgecroft 28-17 in the third.

Ridgecroft’s Ward answered a Holloway three, but the Vikings went on a 16-0 run to take a 45-39 lead.

The teams traded baskets, but BA held on to a 54-53 lead at the end of the third.

Ward hit a three-pointer and Kinlaw added two foul shots to put the Rams back out front, 58-54 to start the fourth quarter.

Morris hit a BA three, but Kinlaw put in a deuce.

Holloway hit a bucket to pull BA

within one, but a basket by Britton and two buckets from Kinlaw gave Ridgecroft a 66-59 lead.

Holloway hit a trey with 10 seconds remaining, but it wasn’t enough as Jones sank two foul shots to preserve the Ridgecroft victory, 69-63.

&uot;I felt like we didn’t play with a lot of energy,&uot; said Rams head coach Elton Winslow. &uot;At the half we were in good shape, but they came out and outscored us in the third quarter and made a ballgame of it.&uot;

Ward led the Rams with 19 while Kinlaw added 15 points in the victory.

&uot;Wes and Ian kept the team together when it got to be a close ball game,&uot; Winslow said.

&uot;We managed to show poise down the stretch and get out with a win.&uot;
