Hazel S. Cowan

HOPEWELL, Va. – Hazel Sexton Cowan, 85, a native of Hertford County, and formerly of Hampton, Va., died December 27, 2004 at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg. She was the widow of Hartwell Eason Cowan.

A graveside service was conducted Wednesday at Ahoskie Cemetery, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Robert May. Garrett Funeral Home Ahoskie, was in charge.

Mrs. Cowan was a homemaker and a member of Winton United Methodist Church, Winton.

Survivors include one daughter, Margaret C. Blayton, Canton, Ga.; one son, Joe S. Cowan of Disputanta; one sister, Mildred Stallings of Louisburg; one brother, Wallace Sexton of Winton; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Lucy A. Parker

WINDSOR – Lucy Ann Parker, 73, died December 24, 2004, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Free Temple Revival Center, Windsor. Burial will be in the Parker family cemetery, Windsor. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge.

Holly H. Calderado

AHOSKIE – Holly Herron Calderado, 45, a native of Allegheny, N.Y., died December 26, 2004.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Liberty Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Ange. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to any chapter of the American Cancer Society. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

Mrs. Calderado was a registered nurse, having formerly worked in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Survivors include her husband, David A. Calderado; her daughter, Sarah Calderado; two sons, Christopher and Matthew Calderado, all of the home; her parents, Forest and Patricia Herron of Southbury, CT; and her brother, Robert Calderado, also of Southbury.

James R. Daughtrey Jr.

SUFFOLK, Va. – James R. &uot;Buck&uot; Daughtrey Jr., 70, a native of Murfreesboro, died December 26, 2004, in Obici Hospital.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday in the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell & Hill Funeral Home by Pastor Tony Peaks. Burial was in Albert G. Horton Jr. Veteran Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 604 Constance Woods Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434.

Daughtry was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran of the Korean War, retired as a glass mechanic with Walters Glass of Suffolk, was a member of the VFW Post No. 2582, former member of the Peanut City Bass Masters.

Survivors include his wife, Doris W. Daughtrey; a son, Michael J. Powell of Suffolk; sisters, Shirley J. Owens of Farmville and Barbara A. Smith of Denver, Colo.; a brother, Aubrey D. Daughtrey of Newport News; half sisters, Delores Cook of Windsor, Va. and Doris Jones of Newport News; and a half brother, David Daughtrey of Ahoskie.

Thomas Williams Jr.

COLERAIN – Thomas Williams Jr., 58, a native of Bertie County, died December 25, 2004.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander. Burial will be in the Wilder-Cherry Family Cemetery.

Williams was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain.

Survivors include sons, Thomas Williams Jr. III of Virginia Beach, Va., and Gregory Privott of Afghanistan; two daughters, Sherritta Fentress and Cheryl Freeman, both of Chesapeake; two sisters, Patricia White of Smithfield, Va., and Everlee Wilson of Washington, D.C.; and nine grandchildren.

Leon Edwards

AHOSKIE – Leon Edwards, 87, a native of Bertie County, died December 28, 2004, at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Conoconary Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Horton. Burial will be in the Edwards family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Edwards was a member of Conoconary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Knight Edwards of the home; sons, James Edwards and Henry Edwards, both of Hampton, Va., Kenneth Edwards, David Louis Edwards and Elton Lee Edwards, all of Hexalena, and Johnny Edwards of Smithfield, Va.; daughters, Rosemary Edwards, Joann Harris, Linda Cowan and Juanita Cowan, all of Hampton and Judith Cox of Fayetteville; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Ethel G. Knizek

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Ethel White Gray Knizek, 91, a native of Corapeake, died December 28, 2004. She was the widow of two husbands, Clayton L. Gray and Elvey P. Knizek.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Richard Lovingood. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery.

Survivors include her son, Charles L. Gray Sr. of Portsmouth; a sister, Edith Evans of Portsmouth; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Robert H. Whitley Sr.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – R.H. Whitley Sr., 90, a native of Como, died December 28, 2004. He was the widower of Hazel J. Whitley and Bronna B. Whitley.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by the Rev. Harry B. Spear III. Burial will be in Popular Springs Cemetery in Franklin, Va. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Linda White. Condolences may be made at www.lovingfuneralhome.com .

Whitley worked for Home Beneficial Insurance Company and retired from Citizen’s Home Insurance Company after many years of service. He was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church, Walter Gum Sunday School Class, Loyal Order of the Moose Order 898, Woodmen of the World and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include two sons, Robert H. Whitley Jr. of Roanoke, Va. and Jerry P. Whitley of Portsmouth; two daughters, Linda E. White and Ellen R. Engram, both of Portsmouth; four grandsons; and three great granddaughters.

Carolise Jones

AHOSKIE – Carolise Jones, 81, a native of Hertford County, died December 25, 2004, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Moore. Burial was in the Jones family cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, was in charge.

Mrs. Jones was the co-owner of Hilltop Inn Caf\u00E9. She was a member of New Ahoskie Baptist Church and the Pollyanna Club.

Survivors include three sons, Rayford Jones of Newport News, Va., Steve Jones of Fayetteville and Dwight Jones of Milford, DE; four daughters, Mary Ruffin of New Castle, Gail &uot;Bunny&uot; Roberson of Jamestown, Janette J. Amaker of Greensboro and Linda J. Hall of the home; one sister, Dorothy Melton of Ahoskie; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Henry F. Beale

MURFREESBORO – Henry Fletcher Beale, 68, a native of Hertford County, died December 27, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church Murfreesboro by the Rev. Robert Richardson. Burial will be Carver Park Cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Murfreesboro is in charge.

Beale was retired from Georgia Pacific. He was a member of Holy Light Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Smith of Murfreesboro, Roberta Little of Scotland Neck and Deborah Baker of Murfreesboro; five sisters, Janet Hall of Como, Carrie Vaughan, Olivia Hicks and Sylvia A. Brooks, all of Murfreesboro and Mary Ann Beale of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, David Beale and Joe Beale, both of Murfreesboro and Norfleet Beale of New York; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Virgie Branch

SEVERN – Virgie Branch, 73, a native of Northampton County, died December 29, 2004, at Halifax Memorial Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Howard R. Taylor

ROUGEMONT – Howard Russell Taylor, 86, died Friday, December 24, 2004. A celebration of life was held Wednesday, December 29, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church.

The family received friends following the service.

Mr. Taylor is survived by his daughters, Sharon Cooney of Rougemont and Tanya Gibson and her husband, Curtis of Killeen, Texas; grandsons, Michael Cooney and lady friend, Brooke Elmore of Morrisville and Patrick Cooney and his fianc\u00E9e, Juli Baucom of Timberlake; and brother, Gene Taylor and his wife, Mary Ann of Robersonville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church, 5731 N. Roxboro Road, Durham, NC 27712.

Arrangements were by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.
