Harry Dowdy

Harry Wright Dowdy, 75, of Winton, NC, died Friday, December 24, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Mr. Dowdy was born July 31, 1929 in Atlanta, Ga., a son of the late John Wright Dowdy and Ollie Dowdy.

He retired from The United States Marine Corps in 1966 after 20 years of service including the Chosin Reservoir Campaign in Korea and Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star. Mr. Dowdy worked for Sears in Norfolk after his service in The Marine Corps and later retired from the Hertford County Sheriff’s Department where he worked for 10 years.

Surviving are, his wife of 56 years, Virginia Estelle Dowdy of Winton; a son, Michael Dowdy and wife, the Rev. Megan Dowdy of Atlanta; a daughter, Mary Anne Dowdy Perry of San Leandro, CA, granddaughters, Erin K. Dowdy and Sara N. Dowdy, sister, Barbara Yglesias and husband, Robert of Miami, FL; sister-in-law, Anita Bene, and brother-in-law, Dallas E. Dilday, both of Norfolk, Va.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Megan Dowdy officiating. The family received friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Monday at Garrett Funeral Home in Ahoskie. Memorials may be sent to the Winton Rescue Squad.

Josephine Newbern

Josephine Smith Newbern, 92, of Ahoskie, died Friday, December 24, 2004.

Mrs. Newbern was born in Halifax County, a daughter of the late Jim Baker and Bessie Perry Baker. She had retired from Darden’s Department Store and was a volunteer at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Mrs. Newbern was active in the First Baptist Church of Ahoskie and a member of Capehart Baptist Church in Merry Hill, NC. She was predeceased by her husbands, Kermit Smith and Cad Newbern and son, Elton Smith, grandson, Kenneth &uot;Buster&uot; Smith, brothers, William Baker and James Baker and sister, Gertie Dail.

Surviving are her sons, Ray Smith and wife Sue, Douglas Smith and wife, Aleta, Rodney Smith and wife, Barbara, all of Tyner, and Jimmie Tracy Smith and wife Judy of Kill Devil Hills, NC; grandchildren, Ronnie Smith, Bonnie Langsdale, Donna Morris, J.W. Smith, Jonathan Smith, Bryant Smith, and Tracey Lynne Smith; great-grandchildren, Sheryl Knowles, Jenna Smith and Blake Austin; great-great-granddaughter, Sara Ellen Knowles; sister, Beulah Sary of Edenton, NC; brother, Ed Baker of West Virginia and her special friend, Dick Collier of Ahoskie.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Garrett Funeral Home in Ahoskie. Interment will be in the Smith Family Cemetery in Tyner. The family received friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of her son, Rodney Smith.

Nazareth King

ROCKY MOUNT – Nazareth Isaiah King, 4, died December 20, 2004 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Rocky Mount, by Dr. Thomas Walker. Interment will follow at the Gardens of Gethsemane, Rocky Mount. A visitation will be from 11 to 12 noon Tuesday at the church. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

John R. Jacobs

WAYNE, N.J. – John Richard Jacobs, a native of Rich Square, died December 19, 2004. He was the widower of Diane Jacobs.

A funeral was conducted Friday at Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor. Interment was in Chapel Hill Cemetery, Rich Square.

Survivors include a daughter, Angel Jacobs of Rich Square; his mother, Beulah M. Jacobs of Rich Square; seven brothers, Willie, Thomas, John Robinson, of Rich Square, William Robinson and Zorro Jacobs, both of Paterson, Donnell Jacobs of Rich Square and John Shouldars of Newark; four sisters, Dorothy R. James of Rich Square, Lorraine Morris of Rocky Mount, Lowre A. Jernigan of Elizabeth City and Lady A. Wifford of Newark; and one granddaughter.

William Tyler Sr.

AHOSKIE – William Fred Tyler Sr., 64, a native of Hertford County, died December 23, 2004 in Franklin, Va.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerryl V. Moody. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, was in charge.

Tyler retired in 1981 after 15 years as a police officer from the New York Police Dept. Mr. Tyler was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Ahoskie, where he served on the Usher and Deacon boards. He was also a graduate of Robert L. Vann School, Ahoskie, and St. Francis College in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Hoggard Tyler of Ahoskie; children, William F. Tyler Jr. of Raleigh and Wayne D. Tyler of Johnson City, Tenn.; godson, Marvin &uot;Shawn&uot; Perkins of Knightdale; three sisters, Bertha Flood of Brooklyn, N.Y., Virginia Tyler and Ida Tyler, both of Ahoskie; one brother, Charles W. Tyler of Wilmington, DE; and two grandchildren.

Joyce P. Miller

MURFREESBORO – Joyce P. Miller, 70, of the 200 block of Collin Road, died Dec. 23, 2004. She was a native of Hertford County, the daughter of the late Elvin Collin &uot;E.C.&uot; and Dorothy Dilday &uot;Park&uot; Parker. She retired as head of new accounts at Planters Bank, Murfreesboro, now RBC Centura Bank. She was a member of Meherrin Baptist Church, where she served as organist for 55 years, co-operated J&J Tours, served as a tour guide for Jefcot Museum, Murfreesboro and was a volunteer for University Health Care Systems. Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Henry Lewis Miller; a daughter, Cheryl Ann Miller of Raleigh, N.C.; a son, Lewis C. Miller Sr. and wife Charlotte of Danville, Va.; a brother, Elvin Parker and wife Candace of Newberry, Fla.; a grandson, Lewis C. Miller Jr. of Danville. A private graveside service for family only will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Highland Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Billy Sellers officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Meherrin Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie. Memorial donations may be made to Meherrin Baptist Church Elevator Fund, 519 Meherrin Lane, Murfreesboro, NC 27855. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, N.C., is serving the Miller Family.

Elizabeth Rountree

GATES – Services for Annie Elizabeth Rountree, which was scheduled for December 26, have been rescheduled for Monday in Gatesville Baptist Church. Miller Funeral Home was in charge.

Alice J. Johns

SUFFOLK, Va. – Alice Louise Jones Johns, 70, a native of Gates County, died December 23, 2004.

A funeral was conducted Monday in the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell & Hill Funeral Home by Pastor William R. Hall. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, 601 Children’s Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507.

She was a waitress for 20 years with Bunny’s Restaurant and a member of First Pentecostal Church of Suffolk.

Survivors include her daughters, Sharon Brown of Suffolk, Wanda Carothers of Portsmouth and Kathryn Rocha of Suffolk; son, William H. Johns Jr. of Virginia Beach; sisters, Margaret King of Windsor, Va., Mary Wishon of Chesapeake and Irma Thompson of Windsor; brothers, Ray Jones of Claremont, Va., Delma Jones of Boykins, Va., and Wesley Jones of Corapeake; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Virginia F. Arline

WATERBURY, Conn. – Virginia Freeman Arline, 85, died December 19, 2004.

A funeral was conducted Monday in Walton Grove AME Zion Church, Hobbsville. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, was in charge.

Elizabeth Rountree

GATES – Annie Elizabeth Rountree, 89, a native of Gates County, died December 23, 2004, in Down East Health & Rehab, Gatesville.

A funeral was conducted Sunday in Gatesville Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene Asbill and the Rev. Paul Harrell. Burial was in the family cemetery near the homeplace. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gatesville Baptist Church or the Gates County Historical Society.

Miss Rountree retired from Durham Life Insurance Co. in 1978, she had worked in its mortgage loan department. She was a member of both Gatesville Baptist Church and the Gates County Historical Society.

Survivors include two nieces; two great-nieces; and a great-nephew.

Donald L. Etheridge

Donald L. Etheridge, 63, died December

25, 2004.

A funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Marantha Baptist Church. Burial was in the Davis family cemetery, Conway. Wrenn Funeral Home is in charge.

Ruby Moore

ROXBORO – Ruby Lucille Bowen Moore, 85 of Red Oak Court died December 25, 2004 at the Person Memorial Hospital Annex. She was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia to the late Jonah and Louise Tuck Bowen. She was predeceased by her husbands Mellie T. Wrenn and Frank Moore and her daughter, Phyllis Wrenn Powell.

She was retired from Roxboro Manufacturing and Durham Drapery. Mrs. Moore was very active at the Montwood Baptist Church where she was a charter member and she was also a member of the Women’s Missionary Union.

Survivors include a daughter, Yolanda Carr Day and husband, Frank of Roxboro, a son, S.T. Wrenn and his wife, Mildred of Murfreesboro, and a son-in-law, Gordon Powell of Roxboro; one stepdaughter, Dale Moore and one stepson, Neal Moore and wife Susie all of Timberlake, 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, and 3 step great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be 2PM Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at the Brooks & White Chapel with the Rev. Carroll Brackett, the Rev. Herbert Brown, and the Rev. Martin Hall officiating. Burial will be in the Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

The pallbearers will be Glenn Powell, Craig Powell, Kevin Wrenn, Sr.,

Kevin Wrenn Jr., Kenneth Wrenn, and Karl Wrenn.The family will receive friends 7PM to 8:30 PM Monday, December 27, 2004 at Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, 34 Somerset Drive.

Franklin D. Russell

WINDSOR – Franklin Deleno Russell, 60, a native of Hertford County, died December 26, 2004.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Edgewood Baptist Church by the Rev. Chris Lee. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Walker Funeral Home. Memorial gifts may be made to Edgewood Baptist Church Memorial Fund.

Russell was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church and a truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Gayle Sanderlin Russell of Windsor; daughter, Leslie Russell of Windsor; a son, Jody Russell of Windsor; two sisters, Irene R. Boyce of Edenton and Pearl R. Brown of Colerain; a brother, Alvin Russell of Powellsville; and one grandchild.

James G. Early II

LEWISTON-WOODVILLE – James Godsey Early II, 58, a native of Atlanta, Ga., died December 26, 2004 at his home.

A memorial service will be conducted at Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday with the Rev. Noah Howard officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Lewiston-Woodville Rescue Squad or University Hospice. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Early was a farmer and a member of Grace Episcopal Church. He was town commissioner for the town of Lewiston-Woodville and a member of Roanoke-Chowan Bass Masters. He also served in the National Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Cora Urquhart Early of Lewiston; daughters, Harriett Simmons Early of Greensboro and Carol Urquhart Early of Charlotte; and a sister, Chris E. Wiggs of Rocky Mount.
