Bethel cagers split

WASHINGTON – The Lady Eagles of Bethel Assembly Christian Academy rolled to a non-conference win here Tuesday night.

Sparked by senior Lorie Beth Copeland’s 17 points, the Lady Eagles put four in double digits as they downed Emmanuel Christian School 67-17.

Bethel jumped out to an early advantage and ran to a 23-6 lead at the end of the first period. They outscored Emmanuel 14-4 in the second quarter to extend the advantage to 37-10 at the intermission.

Bethel continued to roll in the second half, leading 54-13 at the end of three before claiming the final margin of victory.

In addition to Copeland’s 17, Kelli Hoggard dropped in 14 points for Bethel while Ashley Overton added 13 points and Mindy Miller had 11 points.

Kristen Woolard led Emmanuel with 14 points.

Defensively, Hoggard and Kayla Overton each pulled down 10 rebounds while senior Betsy Farmer had six steals.

In varsity boys’ action, Trey Denton poured in 36 points for the Eagles, but Mieko Parker had 49 for Emmanuel as they knocked off Bethel 81-72.

The matchup was close in the first quarter as Bethel grabbed a 16-12 advantage, but Emmanuel went on a 23-4 run in the second quarter to grab a 35-20 halftime lead.

The advantage was still 15 (55-40) at the end of the third period.

Bethel rallied to cut the lead to less than double digits, but didn’t have time to complete the comeback.

Jason Thomas (14) and Stephen Miller (10) also hit double figures for the Eagles. Rounding out the scoring were Frank Feher (5), Larry Caldwell (3), Josh Askew (2) and Jonathan Hoggard (2).

Miller led the Eagles with nine boards.

Bethel began their annual Tip-off Tournament last night (Friday). They will continue action today as basketball begins at 11 a.m. with the Girls Consolation Game.
