Ellodia L. Hathaway

HOBBSVILLE – Ellodia Lamb Hathaway, 77, a native of Perquimans County, died December 3, 2004, in Obici Hospital, Suffolk. She was the widow of Donald Wayland Hollowell and Leonard W. &uot;Jake&uot; Hathaway.

Mrs. Hathaway was a homemaker and a member of Hobbsville Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet H. Eure of Suffolk and Darlene H. Wiley of Hobbsville; her sister, Artelia L. Hobbs of Hobbsville; and four grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, by the Rev. Frank Carter. Entombment followed in the Hathaway Family Cemetery.

Brasen F. Jernigan

GATES – Brasen Faith Jernigan, 1-year old daughter of Jay and Lisa Jo Jernigan of Smith Road, born in Norfolk, Va., died December 4, 2004, in her home.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Trull and the Rev. Billy Presley. Burial will be in the Jernigan family cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

Brasen is also survived by her brothers, Nathan and Hunter Jernigan; grandparents, Lonnie Jernigan of Gates, Carolyn Jernigan of Chesapeake and Teresa Rueschhoff and husband Scott of Moyock; and her maternal great-grandfather, Shorty Motta.

James L. Wilson

SUNBURY – James Lee Wilson, 52, a native of Gates County, died December 2, 2004 at his residence. He was the widower of Deborah K. Wilson.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, by the Rev. Johnnie Warren. Burial will be in Waltons Grove AME Zion Church Cemetery, Hobbsville. A visitation will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of his sister and husband, Kelly and Mary Jones, 507 Black Mingle Road, Gates.

Survivors include one daughter, Angela E. Gatling of Portsmouth; one son, James Lee Junior Gatling of Portsmouth; five sisters, Pearlie Freeman and Joyce Holley, both of Sunbury, Ida May Wilson of Suffolk, Mary Jones of Gates and Harriett Wilson of Ahoskie; two brothers, Richard Wilson and William Wilson, both of Sunbury; and nine grandchildren.

John L. Gladstone

NORFOLK, Va. – John Lee Gladstone, son of the late John Edward Gladstone, and Emma Winder Gladstone, died Saturday afternoon, December 4, 2004, at home, at the age of 78. He was born in Exmore, VA.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy H. Gladstone; a daughter, Susan H. Gladstone; a son, Michael H. Gladstone and daughter-in-law, Ann F.H. Gladstone; four granddaughters, Forrest, Lilian, Emma Lee and Margaret Gladstone; a niece; several great-nieces; and a great nephew.

The Gladstone family received visitors at the Gladstone residence in Norfolk on Monday, December 7, 2004, from 3 to 7 p.m. A private burial will take place at a later date. Hannah H. Brown

ATLANTA, Ga. -Hannah Heath Brown, 69, formerly of Murfreesboro, N.C. died December 1, in Atlanta, GA. She was a native of Hertford County, N.C., the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edwin P. Brown.

After graduating from Goucher College, Ms. Brown’s interest in fashion design

led her to establish residency in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was active in

the Garden Hill Civic Association, the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, the

High Museum of Art, and the Atlanta History Center.

A memorial service was held in Atlanta on Sunday, December 5, at 2:30

P.M. at the H. M. Patterson Spring St. Chapel.

A funeral service will be held at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, N.C. on

Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at 11 A. M. followed by entombment at the

Brown Family Mausoleum in Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro, N.C. After the

services, family and friends will gather at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter J.

Brown, 802 East High St. Murfreesboro, N.C.

Ms. Brow is survived by a sister, Dorothy Brown Shoffner, Raleigh, N.C.;

two brothers, Edwin P. Brown, Augusta Ga., and Andrew V. Brown, Kitty Hawk,

N.C. in addition she is survived by nine nieces and nephews.

Aileen D. Manley

AHOSKIE – On Friday, Dec. 2, 2004, God saw fit to take one of His Angels home. Aileen Dukes Manley departed this life and entered into eternal rest at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

Mrs. Aileen Dukes Manley was born on January 31, 1940 to the late Clayton and Mable Dukes of Ahoskie.

As a child, she joined Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. She was a dedicated church member serving as the assistant church printer and singing in the G.N. Calviness Gospel Chorus. She also served as the former assistant secretary of the Trustee Board. Her life was a testimony of strength and faith in God.

She graduated from R.L. Vann High School and Durham Business College. Throughout her entire career, she worked for the Hertford County Board of Education, where she retired after 30 years of service.

She met and married Donald Manley, and to that union one child was born.

Her memory will live on through her surviving loved ones; one daughter, Gwendalina M. Manley of Denbigh, Va.; one sister, Quay D. Winslow of Ahoskie; one foster sister, Marion Byers of Virginia Beach; two aunts, Jessie Mae Cofield of Ahoskie and Mildred Morgan of Virginia Beach; a very special friend, Clarence Harrell of Ahoskie; numerous cousins; two god-granddaughters, Shaniece Hedgepeth of Raleigh and Tiara Yarborough of Louisburg; and other relatives and dear friends.

All will remember Aileen for her beautiful smile and loving kindness to everyone.

Evie Outlaw

AHOSKIE – Evie Marie Nichols Outlaw, 103, a native of Hertford County, died December 6, 2004 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie. She was the widow of Bailey Outlaw.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Garrett Funeral Home. Interment will be in Job Cemetery.

Mrs. Outlaw was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

AHOSKIE – Willie M. Rogers, a native of Ahoskie, died December 6, 2004 in Philadelphia, Pa.

William L. Saxon

AULANDER – William Leonard Saxon, died December 5, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Saxon was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church of Aulander and retired from the US Navy and Norfolk Shipyard.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Saxon of Aulander; two sons, William G. Saxon of Chesapeake, Va., and David Saxon of Watertown, Wis.; a brother, David Saxon of Kansas; two sisters, Mary Freeman and Kathy Armstrong, both of Oklahoma; and five grandchildren.

Elbert R. Bryant

ASKEWVILLE – Elbert Ray Bryant, 68, of 109 Askewville-Bryant St., passed away suddenly Sunday, December 5, 2004 at his home. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Martha Farmer Bryant, formerly of Robersonville; daughters, Cynthia Bryant Harrell of Salisbury, MD; Martha Bryant Lane of Rocky Mount; Roberta Bryant Cummings of Tobaccoville; and Gloria Bryant of the home; sons-in-law: Howard Harrell of Salisbury, MD; Paul Cummings of Tobaccoville; grandchildren: Vann Harrell of Monroe, Christopher Harrison of Williamston, Carla and Dave Pesce of Salisbury, MD, and Gregor Harrison of Bear Grass; great-grandchildren: David Pesce, Jr. and Sarah Harrison: brother, Johnny Bryant of Williamston; sisters, Geraldine Todd of Askewville and Ann Taylor of Fort White, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carlyle and Sarah Mizelle Bryant and a brother, Julian Bryant.

Mr. Bryant retired from Georgia-Pacific after 32 years of service. After retirement, he stated his own logger safety consulting business. He also was employed with Walker Funeral Home.

Mr. Bryant rendered a lifetime of community service. He was currently serving as a board member of Askewville Assembly of God, a town commissioner of Askewville, and the Windsor Lions Club. He was a former Bertie County Commissioner, former mayor and police chief of Askewville. He was a charter member of the Askewville Fire Department, Askewville Lions Club, Askewville Elementary School PTA and Bertie County Rescue Squad, Unit 2. He formerly served as District Governor of District 31-J of the Lions Club, past president of the North Carolina Lions Association and Board member of the North Carolina Eye and Human Tissue Bank. His last contribution was the gift of sight as he was an eye donor.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Askewville Assembly of God by the Revs. R.O. Denton, Jr. and R.O. Denton, Sr. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at Walker Funeral Home and at other times from Mr. Bryant’s home. Memorial gifts may be made to Askewville Fire Department or Windsor Lions Club.

Agnis Stanley

ROCKY MOUNT – Agnis Stanley, 100, died December 5, 2004 at South Village Nursing Home, Rocky Mount.

RICH SQUARE – Marie J. Jordan, 77, a native of Sedley, Va., died November 29, 2004. She was the widow of Herbert Jordan.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Menola Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnnie T. Speller. Burial was in the church cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge.

Survivors include her children, Elsie Brown of Paterson, N.J., James Jordan, Norfleet Jordan and Larry Jordan, all of Rich Square; her mother, Lettie Parker; a sister, Doris Parkham, both of Sedley; one brother, Joseph L. Parker of Portsmouth; 29 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
