Ervin W. Evans

SUFFOLK, Va. – Ervin Wesley Evans, 78, a native of Bertie County, died November 2, 2004.

A funeral was conducted Friday at Wilroy Baptist Church by the Revs. Carter Dey and Charles W. Thompson. Entombment was in Meadowbrook Memorial Garden Mausoleum with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilroy Baptist Church Building Fund at 306 Williams Rd., Suffolk, VA 23434. Parr Funeral Home was in charge.

Evans retired after 25 years as manager of Knight Finance Company. He was a member of Wilroy Baptist Church. He was a lifetime deacon and past chairman of the deacon board, teacher and member of the Faith Walkers Sunday School class and served on many boards. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran after serving in WWII.

Survivors include his wife, Cenith Hobbs Evans; sons Larry Evans and Wayne Evans, both of Suffolk; a daughter, Brenda E. Garnett of Suffolk; a brother, Joe P. Evans of Pulaski; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mello Davis Jr.

MCCLEANSVILLE, Va. – Mello Leon Davis Jr., 33, former resident of Roanoke Rapids, died October 30, 2004.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Evangelistic Church of Deliverance, Weldon. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Inc., Roanoke Rapids, is in charge.

Ray Riddick

HOLLAND, Va. – Ray Riddick, 51, a native of Gates County, died November 1, 2004 at Louise Obici Hospital, Suffolk.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Gates, by the Rev. John Felton. Burial will be in the Riddick family cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Riddick was a farmer. He was a member of First Baptist Church Gates.

Survivors include his mother, Mildred Riddick of Gates; one son, Brian Steward of Holland; three daughters, Raygina Gatling of Suffolk, Raegina Copeland of Waterbury, Conn., and Latonya Brown of Hampton; five sisters, Patricia Lamison of Richmond, Virginia Harris of Gates, Ella Alston and Deborah Riddick, both of Hampton and Michelle Riddick of Pennsylvania; eight brothers, Benjamin Riddick and Blaine Riddick, both of Gates, Charlie Riddick of Waterbury, Willie Riddick of New Jersey, David Wiggins and Stanley Wiggins, both of Suffolk, Carlton Wiggins of New Haven and Thomas Wiggins of Hertford; eight grandchildren; and three stepchildren.

Patricia Liverman-Grimes

WINDSOR – Mrs. Patricia Faye Liverman-Grimes, 43, died Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation.

Graveside service was conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at the Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie with the Rev. Tommy Hayes officiating.

Patricia was a member of Union Baptist Church in Ahoskie. She had worked at Bertie Memorial Hospital as a radiologist. She was preceded in death by her father, C.J. Liverman.

She is survived by her husband, George F. Grimes of Robersonville; daughter, Caroline Faythe Grimes of Robersonville; stepsons, George Taylor Grimes of Robersonville and David Paul Grimes of Raleigh; her mother, Faye Lewis Liverman of Ahoskie; a sister, Teresa Edwards and husband, Greg of Branchville, Va.; and a brother, Douglas Liverman of Ahoskie.

The family received friends Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home in Ahoskie and other times at the home of her mother. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Robersonville First Christian Church, Robersonville, NC 27871 or to Union Baptist Church in Ahoskie.

Dicey Gilliam

WINDSOR – Dicey Gilliam, 81, died November 3, 2004 at Three Rivers Health and Rehabilitation Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor.

Dorothy M. Baker

SUNBURY – Dorothy Matthews Baker, 70, a native of Bertie County, died November 3, 2004, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Beulah Baptist Church by the Rev. Ron Parr and the Rev. Walter G. Johnston III. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m.

Monday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

Mrs. Baker retired as a quality control manager with the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co., Nut Processing Center, Suffolk, and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, Sunbury.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth R. &uot;Bill&uot; Baker; her son, the Rev. Walter G. Johnston III of Gatesville; two sisters, Joyce Brinkley and Charlotte Meacham, both of Suffolk; two brothers, Eugene Matthews of Lake City, Fla., and Charles Matthews of Suffolk; and three grandsons.

Phillip Jones Jr.

FAR ROCKAWAY, N.Y. – Phillip Jones Jr., died October 29, 2004.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mill Neck Missionary Baptist Church, Como. Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home is in charge.
