WINDSOR – In what has proven as a deadly year on Roanoke-Chowan area roadways, a Windsor man lost his life near here Sunday morning during a two-vehicle mishap on the Bull Hill Road (RP 1301).

Jeremiah Burton Taylor, 22, was killed as a result of the 8:10 a.m. accident. His death brings the number to 25 fatalities since Jan.1 on roads within the local three-county area (Bertie, Hertford, Gates).

According to a report filed by Trooper M.J. Raines of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Taylor was operating a 1997 Toyota pick-up truck, which was traveling east on RP 1301. Entering a slight curve, the truck crossed the centerline and struck, head-on, a 1999 Pontiac van, traveling west, operated by Debra C. Wiggins, 45, of Colerain.

Following impact, the van veered off the right side of the road before stopping. Meanwhile, the truck also veered to the right, overturning several times before coming to rest in a ditch.

Raines’ report revealed that Taylor was not wearing a seat belt. He was ejected from the vehicle. Wiggins was wearing a seat belt. She was transported to Bertie Memorial Hospital.

Taylor was airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville where he died on Monday.

Damage to the truck was listed at $5,000. Wiggins’ van suffered $8,000 in damages.
