Evelyn J. Jones

AHOSKIE – Evelyn James Jones, 71, a native of Hertford County, died October 30, 2004 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church by the Rev. Patrick Young. Burial will be in the Jones family cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Jones was a retired home health care provider. She was a member of New Ahoskie Baptist Church, its senior usher board, Senior Citizens Go-Go Club and Hertford County Office on Aging.

Survivors include a son, Peter &uot;Nookie&uot; James of Ahoskie; two sisters, Dorothy Melton and Carolise Jones, both of Ahoskie; one stepson, Andr\u00E9 Jones of Ahoskie; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Lena B. Bryant

AULANDER – Mrs. Lena B. Bryant, age 96, died peacefully on Saturday, October 30, 2004 in her home in Aulander, NC following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Lena was born July 31, 1908 in Bertie County, the eldest of 10 children born to Andrew Jackson and Penelope Bunch. She retired from Golden Peanut Company many years ago and became a fulltime homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Aulander, NC.

Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband of sixty-seven years, Luther Acree Bryant, her brothers, Marvin Bunch, Curtis Bunch, Clyde Bunch, Jack Bunch, Fred Bunch, John Bunch and one sister, Louise Bunch.

Surviving are two daughters, Vera B. Drew, and her husband John of Aulander, NC and Emily B. Rawls, and her husband, Wayne of Woodland, NC; two sisters, Bessie Bruno of Chesapeake, VA and Mary Mitchell, and her husband, Elvin of Virginia Beach, VA. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Janet Emory and her husband, Wayne, Larry Drew and his wife, Carolyn, Billy Drew and his wife, Kathy, Fred Drew and Sandra Peele and children, Kristie Dunlow, her husband, Scott and their son, Scott and David Simmons, his wife, Denise and their children David, Gracie and Caleb; and Eddie Drew and his wife, Vicky. Great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, Jeff Emory and his wife, Angela; Mickey Drew and his wife, Mindy; Brian Drew; Scott Drew and his wife, Angie and their children, Dylan and Katlyn; Sonya Ramsey and her husband, Joe and their sons, Trey and Joseph; Heath Drew; Tina Vaughan and her husband, Mike, and their son, Michael; Tracy Burkett and her husband, Scott and their children, Ashley and Austin; and Reba Drew; along with a large extended family and dear friends.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday, November 1, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square, NC. Officiating was the Rev. Lester Jarrett and the Rev. Earl Whitmore. Burial followed at Aulander Cemetery in Aulander, NC.

The family received friends at Sykes Funeral Service on Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. and received guest other times at the home of Mrs. Bryant.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to caregivers of University Life, Roanoke Chowan Hospice and friends of the community for their care and support during her illness.

For those who wish to do so, memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society through Bertie County Relay for Life or Roanoke Chowan Hospice.

Louise J. Cornett

WINDSOR, Va. – Louise Johnson Cornett, 84, a native of Southampton County, died October 29, 2004, in Obici Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of the Harrell and Hill Funeral Home, 2460 Pruden Blvd., Suffolk, by the Rev. Skip Francis. Burial will be at Holly Lawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Cornett was a homemaker and a member of Mill Swamp Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, James A. Cornett Sr. of Windsor; sister, Carrie J. Edwards of Rich Square; daughters, Alice C. Bartlett of Smithfield, and Dorothy C. Lewis of Sedley; sons, James A. Cornett Jr., Robert R. Cornett and Jack R. Cornett, all of Windsor; 28 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Joel P. Deloatche

NORFOLK, Va. – Joel Pittman Deloatche, a native of Conway, died October 25, 2004, in his residence.

A funeral was conducted Monday in Mount Carmel Baptist Church by Elder Wayne Lumpkin. Burial was in Rosewood Memorial Park. Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, was in charge.

Deloatch was a retired baker from Host of Sunbeam with 40 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Robert A. Jones

ATLANTA – Robert Anderson Jones, 72, formerly of Northampton County, died Oct. 23, 2004.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Gray’s Funeral Home, Cape Charles, Va.

Daisy E. Coleman

AHOSKIE – Daisy Edwards Coleman, 92, of Ahoskie, passed away October 31, 2004, following a short illness. Mrs. Coleman was predeceased by her husband, Waverly H. Coleman.

She is survived by a sister, Mildred Peele, and a nephew, Abner Askew, both of Ahoskie, and several other nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, Tuesday, November 2 at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 649, Ahoskie, the Ahoskie Rescue Squad, Roanoke Chowan Hospice, or other charity of choice.

Hattie S. Falice

AHOSKIE – Hattie Smith Falice, 77, a native of Southampton County, Va., died October 29, 2004 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Second Baptist Union Church by the Rev. Dennis Slade. Burial will be in the Falice family cemetery, Ahoskie. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Linwood Falice of Ahoskie; children, Gloria Slade of Temple Hill, Md., Margie Joyner and Sharon Holloman, both of Ahoskie and Evelyn Stewart of Newport News, Va.; two sisters, Marion Austin of Roanoke, Va., and Ida Ivey of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Willie L. Smith of Roanoke; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Dolly S. Harrell

AHOSKIE – Dolly S. Harrell, 66, died October 26, 2004, at her home.

A graveside service was conducted Friday at Ahoskie Cemetery by the Rev. Robert May. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, was in charge.

Mrs. Harrell was a retired seamstress.

Survivors include her husband, William M. Harrell; two sons, William M. Harrell Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and Jimmy D. Harrell of Mountain City, Tenn.; three sisters, Sue Johnson of Smithfield, Pattie Brooks of Provident, RI and Peggy Ann Seal of Bristol; three brothers, Frank Seal of Franklin, Va., Hugh and Bill Seal, both of Provident; and three grandchildren.

John S. Sessoms Sr.

POWELLSVILLE – John Selma Sessoms Sr., died October 28, 2004 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at City of Praise, Powellsville, by the Rev. Walter Boston Jr. Burial will be in the Sessoms family cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Sessoms was a member of City of Praise.

Survivors include three sons, Lavon Sessoms of Charlotte, John Selma Sessoms Jr. of Ahoskie and Cedric Sessoms of Richmond, Va.; one daughter, Linda S. Peele of Powellsville; one brother, Simon Sessoms of Portsmouth; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven stepchildren; and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Leroy Rawls Sr.

EURE – Leroy Rawls Sr., 79, a native of Beaufort County, died October 31, 2004 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Massey Funeral Home by the Revs. Ralph Rawls and Ralph Rawls Jr. Burial will be in Aulander cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Rawls was a retired steel worker.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Rawls of Eure and Leroy Rawls Jr. of Chesapeake, Va.; two daughters, Betty Elaine Rogerson of Hopewell, Va., and Janice Sena of Colorado; two sisters, Mary Bacher of Jackson and Norma Lou Rawls of California; 14 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Clarence L. Clark

AHOSKIE – Clarence Lowell Clark, died October 31, 2004, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
