Harvey Ward

RICH SQUARE – Harvey Ward, died October 21, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Lenora Smith

EDENTON – Lenora Hazel Miller Smith, 86, a native of Bertie County, died October 21, 2004 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. She was the widow of Charlie Minton Smith.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church by the Rev. Randy W. Miller and the Rev. Ricky L. Freeman. Burial will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Edenton is in charge. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and all other times at the home of her daughter, 810 Virginia Road, Edenton.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church of Edenton.

Survivors include three daughters, Ruby S. Mince of Tyner, Rachel A. Smith of Ahoskie and Mary S. Skinner of Edenton; three sons, Edward L. Smith of Ahoskie, Charlie C. Smith of Aulander and Andrew M. Smith of Suffolk, Va.; a sister, Amanda M. Overby of Branchville; two brothers, Rodgers W. Miller of Ahoskie and Bobby R. Miller of Plymouth; 19 grandchildren; 36 grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Anna V. Smith

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Anna V. Smith, 63, a native of Southampton County, Va., died October 17, 2004, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Mrs. Smith attended Abraham Lincoln High School. She was a member of Refuge COGIC, Chesapeake and retired after 24 years of service at Chesapeake General Hospital in housekeeping.

Survivors include her husband, Josephus A. Smith of Chesapeake; six daughters, Jennifer S. Whitaker of Merry Hill, Josephine Person, Lisa Cooper, Debora Lawrence and Sharon Smith, all of Chesapeake and Chevette Bess of Norfolk; two sons, Darius Smith and Dwight Smith, both of Chesapeake; 23 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Metropolitan Funeral Service, 7246 Granby St. Interment will be at Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Family and friends will assemble at 2915 Berkley Ave., one hour prior to the service for the procession to the chapel. LeeAndrew Faison

AHOSKIE – Deacon LeeAndrew Roosevelt Faison, 79, a native of Northampton County, died October 21, 2004 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Faison was the founder and owner of East End Plumbing of Ahoskie. He was a member, deacon and Bible Band of East End Church of God in Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy Deans Faison of the home; six sons, Rev. J.C. Faison of Houston, Texas, Rev. Robert Earl &uot;Roy&uot; Faison of Powellsville, Rev. Charles Wayne Faison of Siler City, Kent Andrew Faison of Ahoskie, David Barry Faison of Windsor and Tony Ivan Faison of Pendleton; six daughters, Virginia Louise Bonds of Ahoskie, Betty Lorraine Freeman of Powellsville, Shirley Ann Harris, Evangelist Peggy Jean Anthony and Brenda Kay Vaughan, all of Ahoskie and Evangelist Cassandra Anthony of Hampton, Va.; two brothers, Lynnberg Faison of Brooklyn, N.Y and Robert Gene Faison of Portsmouth; two sisters, Alma Artis of Chesapeake and Thelma Wallace of Portsmouth; 47 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren.

Charlie E. Bunch

WINDSOR – Charlie E. Bunch, 61, died October 18, 2004 in his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. James Disciple Church, Windsor. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Shirley Anderson

CONWAY – Shirley Anderson, 61, died October 20, 2004 at Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk.

A visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids. A funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Allen Chapel AME Church, Jackson, by the Rev. Robert L. Goode Sr. Interment will be in the Powell family cemetery, Conway.

Viola R. Johnson

BALTIMORE, MD. – Viola Ruffin Johnson, formerly of Rich Square, died October 19, 2004 at University Medical Center, Baltimore.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Wilder Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander.

Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker.

Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Vernice Johnson of Lorton, Va., Evon Johnson of Silver Springs, Md., Eloise Johnson Payne of Rich Square and Denise Johnson Drew of Winterville; two sons, Randy Johnson of Fort Washington, Md., and Larry Johnson of Mitchellsville; two sisters, Sarah J. Williams and Rachel Anderson, both of Rich Square; five brothers, Garfield Ruffin, Madrif Ruffin, John Ruffin, Haywood Ruffin and Paul Ruffin; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Samuel Saulsbury

HEXALENA – Samuel Saulsbury, 73, a native of Bertie County, died October 20, 2004 at Three Rivers Nursing Home, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Mill Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Elton Hall Jr. Burial will be in the Saulsbury family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Saulsbury was a retired machine operator for Georgia-Pacific, Ahoskie.

Survivors include one daughter, Annie Liz Sutton of Winton; three sisters, Maggie Little and Estelle Little, both of Hexalena and Agnes Saulsbury of Powellsville; two brothers, Knowledge Saulsbury and Norris Saulsbury, both of Ahoskie; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Sidney C. Futrell

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Sidney C. Futrell, 84, a native of Conway, died October 20, 2004, in his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. chapel, by the Rev. Gene Primm. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to Bethany Baptist Church, 4810 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23701.

Futrell retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Shop 72, and also retired from J. Henry Holland Corp. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member and deacon of Bethany Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille M. Futrell; two sons, Steve Futrell of Roanoke, Va., and Don Futrell of Newport News; a daughter, Jan Miltier of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Herbert Joyner

ROCKY MOUNT – Herbert Joyner, 75, died October 21, 2004 at South Village Nursing Home, Rocky Mount.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Rocky Mount, by the Rev. Winslow Hagans. Interment will be in Stony Creek Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Funeral Home. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Cora B. Tann

MURFREESBORO – Cora Bell Tann, 89, a native of Hertford County, died October 17, 2004, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at New Haven Baptist Church by the Rev. James Hampton. Burial will be in Carver Park Cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, is in charge.

Mrs. Tann was a retired basket weaver from Georgia Pacific and a member of New Haven Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, John Henry Tann of Pleasant Hill; one daughter, Lillie Beale of Murfreesboro; and two grandchildren.
