AHOSKIE – An Ahoskie man has been charged with eluding police following an incident that began near the intersection of Kiwanis and Jersey streets here Sunday night.

According to Ahoskie Police Chief Troy Fitzhugh, Darryl McCoy Winborne, 24, of 601 McGlohon, St., Ahoskie was seen operating a 1992 Nissan Maxima around 8:10 Sunday evening.

&uot;As the officers passed the suspect and realized who it was, they knew he had a revoked license,&uot; Fitzhugh said. &uot;They turned around on the vehicle and that when Mr. Winborne proceeded to speed up.&uot;

Fitzhugh said the short-lived vehicle pursuit ended on Roberts Street, when the suspect pulled into a private yard.

&uot;He jumped from his vehicle and started to run,&uot; Fitzhugh said. &uot;We pursued on foot, but were able to apprehend Mr. Winborne within a few minutes with little altercation.

&uot;This suspect did receive a cut on his head and he was transported to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital (Ahoskie) where he was treated and released into the custody of Officer T. Metzler who transported him to the Hertford County Jail in Winton,&uot; Fitzhugh added.

Winborne was arrested by Sgt. J. Cooper and Officer K. Mizelle.

He was charged with driving while license were revoked, resist and delay and obstruct and delay, careless and wreckless driving, failure to stop for a stop sign and felony speed to elude arrest.

He was placed under a $12,500 secured bond.
