GREENVILLE – Twenty-eight unanswered points in the first quarter paced D.H. Conley to a lead from which they never looked back.

The Vikings knocked off Hertford County 42-18 thanks to a pair of HCHS turnovers that led to early scores.

On their third play from scrimmage, the Vikings’ Matt Moore raced 54 yards to paydirt to pace Conley to an early 7-0 lead.

Following a Hertford County interception, it was Moore again who scored for the Vikings, this time on a four-yard run. Scott Hilgoe’s point after touchdown raised the lead to 14-0.

The lead went to three scores when Mike Daniels picked off an HCHS pass to set up another 54-yard run for Moore at the 3:30 mark of the first quarter.

Ryan McManus threw the final touchdown of the first quarter with less than a minute to play. He connected with Wesley Nichols who fumbled the ball into the endzone. There Sam Falgout jumped on the ball to give Conley a 28-0 advantage.

The Bears finally got on the board with 5:26 to play in the first half when LaMarcus Bond raced 70 yards to paydirt on a punt return. The conversion pass failed, however, leaving the Bears behind 28-6.

No sooner had the Bears gotten on the board than Conley responded, this time on a Joseph Jones 23-yard run. Hilgoe added the conversion to give the Vikings a 35-6 lead at the half.

Conley eventually led 42-6 thanks to Moore’s five-yard run with 9:06 to go in the fourth quarter.

Hertford County added a pair of fourth period scores with Bond scoring on runs of 16 and 26 yards, but it was too little, too late.

In all, the Vikings had 403 yards on the ground and a total of 514 yards on the night. Moore led the Conley attack with 266 yards on 29 carries. Brian Daniels nearly crossed the century mark capturing 79 yards on 17 carries.

The Bears (0-4) will have to look for their first win next week when they host Northeastern in the first game inside the Northeastern Coastal Conference.
